Today, Saturday, 19 October 2013, Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo, Cardinal-Priest of S. Gregorio Magno alla Magliana Nuova, the Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Sao Salvador da Bahia, of Brazil, turns 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he loses his right to vote in any future conclave.

Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo was made Cardinal-Priest of S. Gregorio Magno alla Magliana Nuova by Pope John Paul II in the 2001 Consistory of Cardinals on 21 February 2001, the eighth of his pontificate. He was also the once the Secretary of Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments from 1991, prior to his appointment as Metropolitan Archbishop of Sao Salvador da Bahia in 1999. He retired in 2011.

Today, Tuesday, 24 September 2013, Cardinal Raffaele Farina, Cardinal-Deacon of S. Giovanni della Pigna, the Archivist Emeritus of the Vatican Secret Archives and the current President of the Pontifical Commission for Reference on the Institute for Works of Religion, of Italy, turns 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he loses his right to vote in any future conclave.

Cardinal Raffaele Farina was made Cardinal-Deacon of S. Giovanni della Pigna by Pope Benedict XVI in the 2007 Consistory of Cardinals on 24 November 2007, the second of his pontificate. He was also the once the Rectors of several Pontifical Universities and the Prefect and later Librarian of the Vatican Apostolic Library.

Maria della Pace, and Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Santiago, Chile, turns 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he loses his right to vote in any future conclave.

Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz Ossa was made Cardinal-Priest of S. Maria della Pace by Blessed Pope John Paul II in the 2001 Consistory of Cardinals on 21 February 2001, the eighth of his pontificate. He was also the Metropolitan Archbishop of Santiago in Chile from April 1998 to December 2010.

Anastasia, and Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Mechelen-Brussel, Belgium, turns 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he loses his right to vote in any future conclave.

Cardinal Godfried Danneels was made Cardinal-Priest of S. Anastasia by Blessed Pope John Paul II in the 1983 Consistory of Cardinals on 2 February 1983, Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the second of his pontificate.

Cardinal Severino Poletto, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Torino in Italy, and Cardinal Priest of S. Giuseppe in Via Trionfale, who was elevated to the cardinalate on 21 February 2001 by Blessed Pope John Paul II, turns 80 today, Monday, 18 March 2013.

As such, Cardinal Poletto ceases to be a Cardinal-elector as of today, and lost in voting rights in any future Conclave, according to the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis.

The College of Cardinals now stands at 206 members, out of which there are 114 Cardinal-electors (minus one due to Cardinal Poletto) and 92 Cardinal non-electors.

Cardinal Walter Kasper (Germany) turns 80 today (5 March 2013) but will still be eligible to vote in the Conclave

Cardinal Walter Kasper of Germany, the President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity turns 80 today, Tuesday, 5 March 2013. As such, normally he would have lost his voting rights in a Conclave as a Cardinal-elector.

However, as the rights of a Cardinal-elector is such that as long as he has not yet turned 80 at the moment when the Apostolic See (the Papacy) becomes vacant (Thursday, 28 February 2013), the Cardinal will still be an elector in the conclave that elects the next Pope. Therefore, Walter Kasper will still be an elector in the upcoming conclave, and thus, also the oldest of the Cardinal-electors to enter the Sistine Chapel in a week’s time.

Cardinal Lubomyr Husar reaches age 80 and therefore becomes ineligible to vote in the Papal Conclave

Today, Tuesday, 26 February 2013, Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, Major Archbishop Emeritus of Kyiv-Halic, and thus the former leader of the Ukrainian Catholic Church (Eastern Rite Catholic Church) in full communion with Rome, turns 80, and by the rules laid out in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, can no longer participate in the Conclave to elect the new Pope.

The College of Cardinals now stand at 208 members, with 117 electors (2 will not attend the Conclave in March 2013) and 91 non-electors.

We wish His Eminence a happy birthday and pray for him that God will always guide him and strengthen him, that even in his old age and retirement, he will still be able to do great things for the greater glory of God. May God bless Cardinal Husar and the Ukrainian Church. Amen!
