(College of Cardinals Update) Cardinal Antonio Maria Veglio (Italy), President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People turned 80 and becomes ineligible to participate in a future Papal Conclave

Cardinal Antonio Maria Veglio, Cardinal Deacon of San Cesario in Palatio, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People has turned 80 on Saturday, 3 February 2018. Therefore, in accordance to the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he can no longer vote in a future Papal Conclave.

Cardinal Antonio Maria Veglio has served the Church for many years in the diplomatic service, as the Apostolic Pro-Nuncio of many countries from 1985 to 1989 (Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands) and 1989 to 1994 (Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Mali) and then later as the Apostolic Nuncio to the same countries from 1994 to 1997 before his appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon (1997 to 2001) and Kuwait (1997-2001).

Cardinal Antonio Maria Veglio was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches in 2001, and he was appointed as the President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, a position he held from 2003 to 2017. He was made a Prince of the Church, as the Cardinal Deacon of San Cesario in Palatio at the Consistory of 18 February 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI, the Vicar of Christ.

We pray for Cardinal Antonio Maria Veglio, that even in his retirement years, he may continue to inspire the faithful and the Church, and keep strongly the teachings of the Church. May he have a good health and be blessed all the days of his life. Ad multos annos!

Sede Vacante : Which offices are suspended, which ones has important roles and which remains in place during the sede vacante

A superb collection and data collated by GCatholic site, on the list of all offices that are suspended during the Sede Vacante period (that is between the vacancy of the Apostolic See by the death or resignation of the previous Pope, and the election of a new Pope).

The suspended offices are mainly the prefects of the Congregations of the Roman Curia (example : Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith), presidents of the Pontifical Councils (example : Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace), and many other members and offices of the Roman Curia. The new Pope will be able to either confirm them to continue in their respective offices, or choose to replace them with his own preferred candidates.

The offices that continue to be exercised during the Sede Vacante, include the offices that has important roles in the Sede Vacante period and the Conclave, such as the Camerlengo, the Vice-Camerlengo (who seals the papal apartments and destroy the Ring of the Fisherman), several other officers of the Roman Curia, head of the Papal Household (currently Archbishop Georg Ganswein), all the Apostolic Nuncios, Apostolic Delegates, and other diplomatic representatives of the Holy See, whose diplomatic authority remains even during the Sede Vacante.

Amongst the Cardinals themselves and some other officials, there are special duties that they are supposed to carry out during the Conclave, which includes the Cardinal-electors by their order (Bishop, priest, or deacon), in the running of the Conclave, the Papal Master of Ceremonies (currently Monsignor Guido Marini), who is the one stating the ‘extra omnes’ order officially beginning the lockdown of the Conclave, and other offices.

New Apostolic Nuncio for Malaysia, Timor Leste, and Apostolic Delegate for Brunei, and news on the Episcopal Ordination of Coadjutor Archbishop of Singapore

Archbishop Joseph Marino, Apostolic Nuncio to Bangladesh, was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI yesterday (16 January 2013) as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Malaysia, and also hold the post of Apostolic Nuncio to Timor Leste, and Apostolic Delegate to Brunei Darussalam.

In the Archdiocese of Singapore, Coadjutor Archbishop William Goh will be ordained as a bishop on 22 February 2013, Feast of the Chair of St. Peter. Venue is yet to be finalised, but is believed to be finalised soon, including the time of the Episcopal Ordination Mass (and Dinner).
