(College of Cardinals Update) Cardinal Paolo Romeo (Italy), Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Palermo turned 80 and becomes ineligible to participate in a future Papal Conclave

Cardinal Paolo Romeo, Cardinal Priest of Santa Maria Odigitria dei Siciliani, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Palermo has turned 80 on Tuesday, 20 February 2018. Therefore, in accordance to the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he can no longer vote in a future Papal Conclave.

Cardinal Paolo Romeo has served the Church for many years in the diplomatic service, as the Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti from 1983 to 1990, and then as Apostolic Nuncio to Colombia (199o to 1999), Canada (1999 to 2001) and Italy and San Marino (2001 to 2006).

Cardinal Paolo Romeo was appointed as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Palermo (Italy), a position he held from 2006 to 2015. He was made a Prince of the Church, as the Cardinal Priest of Santa Maria Odigitria dei Siciliani at the Consistory of 20 November 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI, the Vicar of Christ.

We pray for Cardinal Paolo Romeo, that even in his retirement years, he may continue to inspire the faithful and the Church, and keep strongly the teachings of the Church. May he have a good health and be blessed all the days of his life. Ad multos annos!

Cardinal Jorge Maria Mejia, Cardinal-Priest of S. Girolamo della Carita pro hac vice Title, has passed away on Tuesday, 9 December 2014 at the age of 91. He was the Librarian of the Vatican Apostolic Library and the Archivist of the Vatican Secret Archives from 1998 to 2003, in charge of the various collections of the Vatican and the Holy See, of documents and various other objects under the care of the Apostolic See. He was also Secretary for the Congregation for Bishops and the College of Cardinals before taking up the aforementioned role.

Cardinal Mejia was created Cardinal in 2001 by Pope St. John Paul II in his eighth Cardinal creation consistory on 21 February 2001. His motto was “Ipse est pax nostra” which means ‘He Himself is our peace’, a reminder that our Lord Jesus Christ brings peace into the world, and in His Good News we can find true peace. It is this peace which Cardinal Mejia had worked hard for many years, and to which peace he is now going to.

On Tuesday, 2 December 2014, Cardinal Tarcisio Pietro Evasio Bertone, S.D.B., Cardinal-Bishop of Frascati, Cardinal Secretary State Emeritus of the Secretariat of State and the Chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church of Apostolic Camera or the Cardinal Camerlengo (Italy), turned 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he lost his right to vote in any future conclave. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone was born in Romano Canavese, Italy on 2 December 1934.

Cardinal Bertone was made Cardinal-Priest of S. Maria Ausiliatrice in Via Tuscolana pro hac vice Title by Pope St. John Paul II in the 2003 Consistory of Cardinals on 21 October 2003, the ninth and last Consistory of his pontificate. Cardinal Bertone was made a Cardinal in honour of his position as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Genoa, a position which he held from 2002 to 2006. Before that, Cardinal Bertone was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Vercelli and also the Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, working closely with its Prefect, the then Cardinal Joseph Alois Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI).

Cardinal Franc Rode was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia on 5 September 1934.

Cardinal Rode was made Cardinal-Deacon of S. Francesco Saverio alla Garbatella by Pope Benedict XVI in the 2006 Consistory of Cardinals on 24 March 2006, the first Consistory of his pontificate. Cardinal Rode was made a Cardinal in honour of his position as the Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and for Societies of Apostolic Life, the branch of the Roman Curia in charge of all religious orders and all matters pertaining to religious life and profession, a position he held from 2004 to 2011. Cardinal Jose da Cruz Policarpo, Cardinal-Priest of S. Antonio in Campo Marzio has passed away on Wednesday, 12 March 2014 at the age of 78. He was the Patriarch of Lisbon and therefore the Primate of Portugal, from 1998 to 2013, and was recently retired from his position.

Cardinal Joachim Meisner was made Cardinal-Priest of S. Pudenziana by Blessed Pope John Paul II in the 1983 Consistory of Cardinals on 2 February 1983, the Solemnity of the Presentation of the Lord, the second Consistory of his pontificate. Cardinal Meisner was made a Cardinal in his position as the Bishop of Berlin since 1980, and in 1988 until now, he is the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Koln.
