Cardinals Update: Passing of Cardinal Fiorenzo Angelini, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers (Italy), at the age of 98

Cardinal Fiorenzo Angelini, Cardinal-Priest of S. Spirito in Sassia pro hac vice Title, has passed away on last Saturday, 22 November 2014 at the age of 98. He was the long time chief of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers, first as its Pro-President from 1985 to 1989 and then as President from 1989 to 1996. In that position, Cardinal Angelini has a very special role to help the health care workers that are part of the Church’s vast humanitarian and charity efforts around the world. In another unique note, he was also the last of the Cardinals present in the current College of Cardinals to be born in the city of Rome in the year 1916.

Cardinal Angelini was created Cardinal in 1991 by Pope St. John Paul II in his fifth Cardinal creation consistory on 28 June 1991. His motto was “Evangelizo Pacem Evangelizo Bonum” which means ‘I bring the Good News of peace’, a reminder that our Lord Jesus Christ brings peace into the world, and in His Good News we can find true peace. It is this peace which Cardinal Angelini had worked hard for many years, and to which peace he is now going to.

We pray for Cardinal Angelini, that he will rest in peace, and God will reward him for all his hard and great work as the long time servant of God for the ministries and good works he had done for the sake of God and His people in the entire Universal Church in his dedication and work in the Roman Curia, in helping those who are dealing with health care and care of the sick around the world. May the Lord welcome him into His embrace in heaven and give him eternal rest and happiness that he deserved.

Cardinals Update: Passing of Cardinal Edmund Casimir Szoka, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Detroit (United States of America), at the age of 86

Cardinal Edmund Casimir Szoka, Cardinal-Priest of Ss. Andrea e Gregorio al Monte Celio has passed away on last Wednesday, 20 August 2014 at the age of 86. He was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Detroit, one of the largest and most important Archdioceses in the United States of America, from 1981 to 1990. He was then appointed as the President of the Prefecture of the Economic Affairs of the Holy See, and the President of the Governatorate of the Vatican City State, a post which he held between 1997 to 2006, essentially the top prelate in charge of the day-to-day governance of the smallest country in the world, the Vatican City, where the heart of the Church is.

Cardinal Szoka was created Cardinal in 1988 by Pope St. John Paul II in his fourth Cardinal creation consistory on 28 June 1988. His motto was “To live in faith”. This means an emphasis on truly living the faith in the life he led, and truly, he had been faithful and had already shown that faith through the actions he had done in his long and wonderful life filled with total dedication to the tasks given to him and to the people entrusted to his care.

Cardinal deaths update: Passing of Cardinal Francesco Marchisano (Italy) and Cardinal Edward Bede Clancy (Australia)

Cardinal Francesco Marchisano, Cardinal-Priest of S. Lucia del Gonfalone pro hac vice Title passed away on Monday, 27 July 2014 at the age of 85. He was the President Emeritus of the Labour Office of the Apostolic See and the Permanent Commission for the Protection of Historical and Artistic Monuments of the Holy See. He was also the Vicar General Emeritus of the Diocese of Rome, a position which he occupied during the years 2002 to 2005.

Meanwhile, Cardinal Edward Bede Clancy, Cardinal-Priest of S. Maria in Vallicella passed away on Sunday, 3 August 2014 at the age of 90. He was the Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Sydney, and therefore the Primate Emeritus of Australia. He faithfully led the faithful in Sydney from 1983 to 2001.

Cardinal Marchisano was created Cardinal in 2003 by Pope St. John Paul II in his ninth and last Cardinal creation consistory on 21 October 2003. His motto was In Caritate Radicati et Fundati, which means rooted and grounded in love, that is the emphasis placed on love, which is the essential and the greatest fruit of the Holy Spirit, and the fact that without love, we cannot truly have faith in the Lord.

Cardinal Marchisano was created Cardinal in 1988 by Pope St. John Paul II in his fourth Cardinal creation consistory on 28 June 1988, on the eve of the Solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul. His motto was Fides Mundum Vincit, which means faith conquers the world, the fact that is truly about how if we have faith, no matter what the world throws at us, we will prevail, just as the Lord will eventually prevail against the world and the forces of Satan.

We pray for the soul of these two great Princes of the Church and the servants of God’s people. May their hard work and commitments to the Church and God’s people bring them justification and eternal rest in God’s presence in heaven. We pray also for those whom they had left behind, that their legacies and hard work will continue to bear fruit in those whom they had touched in life.

New Secretary of State of the Holy See, Archbishop Pietro Parolin

Archbishop Pietro Parolin, the longtime veteran of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, and a skilled and veteran diplomat in his current role as the Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela, as the trusted aide to Pope Benedict XVI (now Pope Emeritus), had been appointed on Saturday, 31 August 2013 as the new Secretary of State, the top position of the Roman Curia, the governing body of the Church.

In addition, as positions tied to the post of Secretary of State, Archbishop Parolin also automatically become the new President of Interdicasterial Commission on Particular Churches (which task is managing the Eastern Catholic Churches), President of Interdicasterial Commission for the Church in Eastern Europe, and the Protector of Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.

Archbishop Pietro Parolin will replace the outgoing Cardinal Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, S.D.B., who is also the Chamberlain (Camerlengo) of the Church, effective on 15 October 2013 as per the decree of Pope Francis released today.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone is then the Secretary of State Emeritus effective on the state mentioned in the paragraph above (15 October), when Archbishop Pietro Parolin officially takes over as the new Secretary of State. The position of the Secretary of State is the top in the Roman Curia, below only the Pope in the hierarchy of the Church. Cardinal Bertone will however remain as the Camerlengo of the Church.

We thank Cardinal Bertone for all his hard work and contributions to the Church, many of which were unknown to many, and all the labours he had done in great humility and dedication in his position as the servant of the Holy Church.

As the Secretary of State position is the top official post of the entire Church and the Roman Curia save for the Pope himself, it is expected that the 58 years old Archbishop Pietro Parolin will be made a Cardinal in the next Consistory of Cardinals (possibly early 2014 or late 2014).

Cardinal Pimenta was created Cardinal in 1988 by the late Blessed Pope John Paul II and he was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Bombay, India from 1978 to 1996 and was for quite a few years, the President of Conference of Catholic Bishops of India.

We pray for Cardinal Pimenta, that he will rest in peace, and God will reward him for all his hard work as the shepherd of the people of God in Bombay and his numerous other contributions to the Church and for the Lord’s sake. Appointment of Advisory Board for the Reform of the Roman Curia

Pope Francis had appointed an advisory board composed of eight Cardinals and some other prelates whose function is to help the Holy Father in his reform of the Roman Curia to increase its efficiency.

Sede Vacante : Which offices are suspended, which ones has important roles and which remains in place during the sede vacante

A superb collection and data collated by GCatholic site, on the list of all offices that are suspended during the Sede Vacante period (that is between the vacancy of the Apostolic See by the death or resignation of the previous Pope, and the election of a new Pope).

The suspended offices are mainly the prefects of the Congregations of the Roman Curia (example : Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith), presidents of the Pontifical Councils (example : Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace), and many other members and offices of the Roman Curia. The new Pope will be able to either confirm them to continue in their respective offices, or choose to replace them with his own preferred candidates.

The offices that continue to be exercised during the Sede Vacante, include the offices that has important roles in the Sede Vacante period and the Conclave, such as the Camerlengo, the Vice-Camerlengo (who seals the papal apartments and destroy the Ring of the Fisherman), several other officers of the Roman Curia, head of the Papal Household (currently Archbishop Georg Ganswein), all the Apostolic Nuncios, Apostolic Delegates, and other diplomatic representatives of the Holy See, whose diplomatic authority remains even during the Sede Vacante.

Amongst the Cardinals themselves and some other officials, there are special duties that they are supposed to carry out during the Conclave, which includes the Cardinal-electors by their order (Bishop, priest, or deacon), in the running of the Conclave, the Papal Master of Ceremonies (currently Monsignor Guido Marini), who is the one stating the ‘extra omnes’ order officially beginning the lockdown of the Conclave, and other offices.

Cardinal Walter Kasper of Germany, the President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity turns 80 today, Tuesday, 5 March 2013. As such, normally he would have lost his voting rights in a Conclave as a Cardinal-elector.

However, as the rights of a Cardinal-elector is such that as long as he has not yet turned 80 at the moment when the Apostolic See (the Papacy) becomes vacant (Thursday, 28 February 2013), the Cardinal will still be an elector in the conclave that elects the next Pope. Therefore, Walter Kasper will still be an elector in the upcoming conclave, and thus, also the oldest of the Cardinal-electors to enter the Sistine Chapel in a week’s time.

Cardinal Giovanni Cheli of Italy, who was the Cardinal Priest of Ss. Cosma e Damiano, passed away at the age of 94, on Friday, 8 February 2013. He was the Pro-President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People from 1986 to 1989, and then as the President from 1989 to 1998.

Let us pray for Cardinal Cheli, that God will indeed welcome him into His heavenly kingdom, and may eternal rest be granted upon him. Requiescat in Pace. Amen.
