Cardinal Ricardo Maria Carles Gordo, Cardinal Priest of S. Marie Consolatrice al Tiburtino has passed away on Tuesday, 17 December 2013 at the age of 87. He was the Archbishop of Barcelona, as an Archdiocese directly subjected to the Holy See from 1990 to 2004.

Cardinal Carles Gordo was created Cardinal in 1994 by Blessed Pope John Paul II in his sixth Cardinal creation consistory on 26 November 1994. His motto was Ut Omnes Unum Sint, “That they all may be One”, part of the prayer of Jesus for His disciples before His Passion, for the unity of His Church.

We pray for Cardinal Carles Gordo, that he will rest in peace, and God will reward him for all his hard and great work as the long time servant of God as the shepherd of the faithful in Barcelona, for all the ministries and good works he had done there for the sake of God and His people. May the Lord welcome him into His embrace in heaven and give him eternal rest and happiness that he deserved.

Cardinal Domenico Bartolucci, Cardinal Deacon of SS. Nomi di Gesu e Maria in Via Lata has passed away on Monday, 11 November 2013 at the age of 96. He was the Director of the Sistine Chapel Choir (1956-1997), better known as his title of the Director Master of the Pontifical Musical Chorus of the Sistine Chapel.

Cardinal Bartolucci was created Cardinal in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI in his third Cardinal creation consistory and he was a longtime Director of the Sistine Chapel choir, a great conductor and composer of sacred and liturgical music, for over 41 years from 1956 to 1997. Cardinal Bartolucci retired in 1997, but even then, he still conducted his beloved choir and created more beautiful music for worship after he retired. He was honoured by Pope Benedict XVI for his longtime service to the Church by the bestowal of the red hat of a Cardinal in 2010, when he was 93.

Cardinal Medardo Joseph Mazombwe, Cardinal Priest of S. Emerenziana a Tor Fiorenze has passed away on Thursday, 29 August 2013 at the age of 81. He was the Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Lusaka in Zambia.

Cardinal Mazombwe was created Cardinal in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI and he was a longtime bishop of Chipata since 1970 until he was made the Metropolitan Archbishop of Lusaka, Zambia in 1996. Cardinal Mazombwe retired in 2006, and was also for a few years the President of the Zambia Episcopal Conference.

Passing of Cardinal Ersilio Tonini of Italy, at the age of 99

Cardinal Ersilio Tonini, Cardinal Priest of SS. Redentore a Valmelaina has passed away on Sunday, 28 July 2013 at the age of 99, just a few days after his birthday on 20 July. At 99, he was the oldest living Cardinal in the College of Cardinals.

Cardinal Tonini was created Cardinal in 1994 by the late Blessed Pope John Paul II and he was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Ravenna-Cervia, Italy from 1975 to 1990. He was the last Cardinal to have been born in the Pontificate of Pope St. Pius X, the last Pope to be made a saint. Pope St. Pius X passed away exactly one month after Cardinal Tonini was born (20 August 1914). He was also the last Cardinal to have been born prior to World War I, which began just a week after his birth.

Passing of Cardinal Stanislaw Nagy at the age of 91 (Wednesday, 5 June 2013)

Cardinal Stanislaw Nagy, a Cardinal from Poland and a good friend of the late Blessed Pope John Paul II, and a renowned theologian and a great teacher, has passed away last Wednesday, on 5 June 2013 at the age of 91.

Cardinal Nagy was made a Cardinal-Deacon of S. Maria della Scala at the age of 82 in 2003, as a Cardinal non-elector, in recognition of his great service for the Church, both in the field of theology, and in the field of knowledge in general, after his numerous writings on the faith and the Pope himself, whom he was a dear friend of.

With the passing of Cardinal Nagy, the composition of the College of Cardinals has once again changed, just a day after Cardinal Godfried Danneels of Belgium aged out at 80 and became a Cardinal non-elector.

As of 5 June 2013, the College of Cardinals consist of 204 members in total, with 112 Cardinal-electors and 92 Cardinal non-electors (minus one due to the passing of Cardinal Nagy).

We pray for His Eminence’s soul that God will welcome him into His embrace in heaven, and grant him the heavenly reward that is promised him, and live with Him in glory forever and ever. Requiescat in Pace.

Passing of Cardinal Jean Honore, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Tours at age of 92

Cardinal Jean Honore, who was the Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Tours and was made Cardinal-Priest of S. Maria della Salute a Primavalle by Blessed Pope John Paul II in February 2001, has passed away on Thursday, 28 February 2013, at the age of 92, on the day of Pope Benedict XVI’s retirement from the Papacy.

We pray for His Eminence Cardinal Honore’s soul, that God will welcome him to take a place in his kingdom, and that he will deserve the prize of eternal life after his fruitful life of 92 years in this world. God bless Cardinal Honore. Requiescat in Pace, Your Eminence.

College of Cardinals : Passing of Cardinal Julien Ries, at the age of 92

Cardinal Julien Ries from Belgium, who was 92, has passed away yesterday, on Saturday, 23 February 2013. He was elevated to the Cardinalate as a Cardinal non-elector at the consistory of 18 February 2012 last year with 22 other cardinals, and was the first one to pass away among them. He was made the Cardinal Deacon of S. Antonio di Padova a Circonvallazione Appia.

Let us pray for the Cardinal, that God will welcome him home, and open the doors of heaven for him, after his long and tireless work in the spread of the Gospel and in bringing mankind closer to God. Requiescat in Pace, Your Eminence.

Passing of Cardinal Giovanni Cheli (Italy), President Emeritus of Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People

Cardinal Giovanni Cheli of Italy, who was the Cardinal Priest of Ss. Cosma e Damiano, passed away at the age of 94, on Friday, 8 February 2013. He was the Pro-President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People from 1986 to 1989, and then as the President from 1989 to 1998.

Let us pray for Cardinal Cheli, that God will indeed welcome him into His heavenly kingdom, and may eternal rest be granted upon him. Requiescat in Pace. Amen.
