Cardinals Update : Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Sevilla (Spain), turned 80, ceases to be a Cardinal-elector

On Saturday, 23 August 2014, Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo, O.F.M., Cardinal-Priest of S. Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli, Cardinal-Archbishop Emeritus of Sevilla (Spain), turned 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he lost his right to vote in any future conclave.

Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo was made Cardinal-Priest of S. Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli by Pope St. John Paul II in the 2003 Consistory of Cardinals on 21 October 2003, the ninth and last Consistory of his pontificate. Cardinal Amigo Vallejo was made a Cardinal in honour of his position as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Sevilla, one of the most prominent and important Archdiocese in Spain, a staunch and faithful Catholic nation, which he held from 1982 to 2009.

May God bless His Eminence Cardinal Amigo Vallejo with a blessed old age and health. May he remain strong in the faith and hopefully can perhaps still continue to work great graces and good works of love and peace even after he has been retired to the people as the helper of the Vicar of Christ our Pope, as he continues to minister to the people of God. We thank him for his good service as the shepherd of the faithful in Sevilla and Spain.

Cardinal Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy, Cardinal-Priest of S. Maria delle Grazie alle Fornaci fuori Porta Cavalleggeri has passed away on last Monday, 2 June 2014 at the age of 90. He was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Bangalore, one of the large Archdioceses in India, from 1968 to 1971, and then was for a very long time, the member of the Roman Curia, as the Secretary of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith from 1973 to 1985, and then as Prefect for the Congregation for Oriental Churches from 1985 to 1991, and eventually as the Protodeacon of the College of Cardinals from 1993 to 1996.

Cardinal Lourdusamy was created Cardinal in 1985 by Pope St. John Paul II in his third Cardinal creation consistory on 25 May 1985. His motto was Aedificare Domum Dei, which means “To build the house of God”. This means an emphasis on the evangelisation to the people of God, to establish His Church, which is growing rapidly in India, as millions grow to know about the Lord and wanting to join the faith in Jesus.

We pray for Cardinal Lourdusamy, that he will rest in peace, and God will reward him for all his hard and great work as the long time servant of God as the shepherd of the faithful in Bangalore, as well as for all the ministries and good works he had done in Rome for the sake of God and His people in the entire Universal Church. May the Lord welcome him into His embrace in heaven and give him eternal rest and happiness that he deserved.

With the passing of Cardinal Lourdusamy, the College of Cardinals now stands at 214 members, with 118 Cardinal-electors and 96 Cardinal non-electors. The number of Cardinal-electors now is two below the specified maximum limit.

Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Sao Salvador da Bahia (Brazil) turns 80, ceases to be a Cardinal-elector

Today, Saturday, 19 October 2013, Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo, Cardinal-Priest of S. Gregorio Magno alla Magliana Nuova, the Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Sao Salvador da Bahia, of Brazil, turns 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he loses his right to vote in any future conclave.

Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo was made Cardinal-Priest of S. Gregorio Magno alla Magliana Nuova by Pope John Paul II in the 2001 Consistory of Cardinals on 21 February 2001, the eighth of his pontificate. He was also the once the Secretary of Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments from 1991, prior to his appointment as Metropolitan Archbishop of Sao Salvador da Bahia in 1999. He retired in 2011.

Today, Tuesday, 4 June 2013, Cardinal Godfried Danneels, Cardinal-Priest of S. Anastasia, and Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Mechelen-Brussel, Belgium, turns 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he loses his right to vote in any future conclave.

Cardinal Godfried Danneels was made Cardinal-Priest of S. Anastasia by Blessed Pope John Paul II in the 1983 Consistory of Cardinals on 2 February 1983, Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the second of his pontificate.

Cardinal Keith O’ Brien of Edinburgh resigned amid controversy, and will not participate in Conclave

The resignation of Cardinal Keith O’ Brien, now Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of St. Andrews and Edinburgh in Scotland, UK, has been accepted by Pope Benedict XVI, and allegations of improper conduct have also arisen against him. As such, he found it wise not to participate in the Conclave, which will happen sometime in March 2013.

Therefore, at this moment, we will have 115 Cardinal-electors barring any other Cardinals who may also skip the Conclave due to poor health such as Cardinal-Patriarch Antonios Naguib of the Coptic Catholics who is reported to be in ill health.

 

With regards to Cardinal O’ Brien, it is easy for many within, and especially from outside the Church of Christ to accuse not only him, but the whole Church itself. Many would be very happy to see the Church destroyed, and therefore, crushing the last bastion of truth and light in our struggle against evil. The world does hate Christ and those who believed in Him. We in the Church, and our leaders are human, and we are all sinners. Indeed, to those who have been given the trust and authority, much responsibility is given too.

Whatever bad things Cardinal O’ Brien had done, much good he had also done as well, in the service of our Lord. We thank him for his long service to God and His Church and pray that he will cooperate in all matters necessary, so that our Church, indeed, will be purged from all evil that has encroached into it in recent years. Indeed, Satan has been so busy working against God and His people that not only that he is not satisfied with just turning the world against us, it also corrupts even those inside, to destroy us.

This is why, the Year of Faith is important, because we must remember first and foremost that no matter what Satan throws at us, our faith must ever be impeccable and strong, and we must always centre ourselves in the love of God, through the Church. So, brothers and sisters in Christ, let us pray that the Lord will send His Holy Spirit to cleanse, not only our Church, but also the whole world, from Satan the deceiver. Pray for our Pope Benedict XVI who will be retiring soon, and for his soon-to-be elected successor. God bless the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church!
