In the beginning, when God began to create the heavens and the earth, the earth had no form and was void; darkness was over the deep and the Spirit of God hovered over the waters.

God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light ‘Day’ and the darkness ‘Night’. There was evening and there was morning : the first day.

God said, “Let there be a firm ceiling between the waters and let it separate waters from waters.” So God made the ceiling and separated the waters below it from the waters above it. And so it was. God called the firm ceiling ‘Sky’. There was evening and there was morning : the second day.

God said, “Let the waters below the sky be gathered in one place and let dry land appear. And so it was. God called the dry land ‘Earth’, and the waters gathered together he called ‘Seas’. God saw that it was good.

God said, “Let the earth produce vegetation, seed-bearing plants, fruit trees bearing fruit with seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth.” And so it was. The earth produced vegetation : plants bearing seed according to their kind and trees producing fruit which has seed, according to their kind. God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning : the third day.

God said, “Let there be lights in the ceiling of the sky to separate day from night and to serve as signs for the seasons, days and years; and let these lights in the sky shine above the earth.” And so it was. God therefore made two great lights, the greater light to govern the day and the smaller light to govern the night; and God made the stars as well. God placed them in the ceiling of the sky to give light on the earth and to separate the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning : the fourth day.

God said, “Let the water teem with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth under the ceiling of the sky.” God created the great monsters of the sea and all living animals, those that teem in the waters, according to their kind, and every winged bird, according to its kind. God saw that it was good. God blessed them saying, “Be fruitful and increase in number, fill the waters of the sea, and let the birds increase on the earth.” There was evening and there was morning : the fifth day.

God said, “Let the earth produce living animals according to their kind : cattle, creatures that move along the ground, wild animals according to their kind. So it was. God created the wild animals according to their kind, and everything that creeps along the ground according to its kind. God saw that it was good.

God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, to Our likeness. Let them rule over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle, over the wild animals, and over all creeping things that crawl along the ground.” So God created man in His image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it, rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky, over every living creature that moves on the ground.” God said, “I have given you every seed bearing plants which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree that bears fruit with seed. It will be for your food. To every wild animal, to every bird of the sky, to everything that creeps along the ground, to everything that has the breath of life, I give every green plant for food.” So it was.

God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. There was evening and there was morning : the sixth day. That was the way the sky and earth were created and all their vast array. By the seventh day the work God had done was completed, and He rested on the seventh day from all the work He had done.

Accept, we beseech You, o Lord, the prayers of Your people together with the sacrifice they offer, that what has been begun by the Paschal Mysteries, may by Your arrangement result in our eternal healing. Preface of Easter

Vere dignum et justum est, aequum et salutare : Te quidem, Domine, omni tempore, sed in hac potissimum die (in hoc potissimum) gloriosus praedicare, cum Pascha nostrum immolatus est Christus. It is truly meet and just, right and profitable, to extol You indeed at all times, o Lord, but chiefly with highest praise to magnify You on this day (in these days) on which for us was sacrificed Christ, our Paschal Lamb. Blessed be the Lord, God of Israel, because He had visited and wrought the redemption of His people.

And had raised up a horn of salvation to us, in the house of David, His servant.

As He spoke by the mouth of His holy Prophets, who are from the beginning.

Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us.

To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember His holy testament.

The oath, which He swore to Abraham our father, that He would grant to us.

English translation

In those days, Moses therefore wrote the canticle, and taught it to the children of Israel. And the Lord commanded Joshua the son of Nun, and said, “Take courage, and be valiant, for you shall bring the children of Israel into the land which I have promised, and I will be with you.”

Therefore after Moses wrote the words of this law in a volume, and finished it, he commanded the Levites, who carried the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord, saying, “Take this book, and put it in the side of the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a testimony against you. For I know your obstinacy and your most stiff neck. While I am yet living, and going in with you, you have always been rebellious against the Lord. How much more when I shall be dead?”

“Gather unto me all the ancients of your tribes, and your doctors, and I will speak these words in their hearing, and will call Heaven and earth to witness against them. For I know that after my death, you will do wickedly and will quickly turn aside from the way that I have commanded you, and evils shall come upon you in the latter times, when you shall do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him by the works of your hands.”

Moses therefore spoke in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel, the words of this canticle, and finished it even to the end.

Deuteronomy 32 : 1-4

Attende, Caelum, et loquar : et audiat terra verba ex ore meo.

Verse : Exspectetur sicut pluvia eloquium meum : et descendant sicut ros verba mea.

O God, the exaltation of the humble, and the strength of the righteous, Who, by Your holy servant Moses, had pleased so to instruct Your people by the singing of Your sacred canticle, that the renewal of the law should be also our guidance, show forth Your power to all the multitude of Gentiles justified by You, and by mitigating Your terror, grant them joy, that, all sins being blotted out by Your remission, the threatened vengeance may give way to salvation. And the waters returned, and covered the chariots and the horsemen of all the army of Pharaoh, who had come into the sea after them. Neither did there so much as one of them remained. But the children of Israel marched through the midst of the sea upon dry land, and the waters were to them as a wall on the right hand and on the left.

And the Lord delivered Israel on that day out of the hand of the Egyptians. And they saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore, and the mighty hand that the Lord had used against them, and the people feared the Lord, and they believed the Lord, and Moses, His servant. Then Moses and the children of Israel sung this canticle to the Lord, and said :

English translation

Let us sing to the Lord, for He is gloriously honoured, the horse and the rider He had thrown into the sea. He has become my Helper and Protector unto salvation.

Verse : He is my God, and I will honour Him, the God of my father, and I will extol Him.

Verse : He is the Lord that destroys wars, the Lord is His Name.

English translation

O God, Whose ancient miracles we see shining also in our days, while by the water of regeneration. You had operated for the salvation of the Gentiles, that which by the power of Your right hand You had conferred upon one people, by delivering them from the Egyptian persecution, grant that all the nations of the world may become the children of Abraham, and partake of the dignity of the people of Israel. English translation

In the beginning God created Heaven and earth. And the earth was void and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God moved over the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light.” And light was made. And God saw the light that it was good, and He divided the light from the darkness. And He called the light Day, and the darkness Night, and there was evening and morning, the first day.

And God said, “Let there be a firmament made amidst the waters, and let it ivide the waters from the waters.” And God made a firmament, and divided the waters that were under the firmament from those that were above the firmament. And it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven, and the evening and morning were, the second day.

God also said, “Let the waters that are under the Heaven be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so done. And God called the dry land, Earth, and the gathering together of the waters, He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

And He said, “Let the earth bring forth his green herb, and such as may seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, which may have seed in itself upon the earth. And it was so done. And the earth brought forth the green herb, and such as yielded seed according to its kind, and the tree that bore fruit, having seed, each one according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And the evening and morning were, the third day.

And God said, “Let there be lights made in the firmament of Heaven to divide the day and the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years, to shine in the firmament of Heaven, and to give light upon the earth.” And it was so done.

And God made two great lights, a greater light to rule the day, and a lesser light to rule the night, and the stars. And He set them in the firmament of Heaven, to shine upon the earth, and to rule the day and the night, and to divide the earth, and to rule the day and the night, and to divide the light and the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And the evening and morning were, the fourth day.

God also said, “Let the waters bring forth the creeping creature having life, and the fowl that may fly over the earth under the firmament of Heaven.” And God created the great whales, and every living and moving creature which the waters brought forth, according to their kinds, and every winged fowl according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

And He blessed them, saying, “Increase and multiply, and fill the waters of the sea, and let the birds be multiplied upon the earth.” And the evening and the morning were, the fifth day.

And God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature in its kind, cattle, and creeping things, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so done. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, and cattle, and everything that crept on the earth after its kind. And God saw that it was good.

And He said, “Let Us make man to Our own image and likeness, and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that moved upon the earth.”

And God created man to His own image, to the image of God He created him, male and female He created them. And God blessed them, saying, “Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and all living creatures that move upon the earth.”

And God said, “Behold, I have given you every herb-bearing seed upon the earth, and all trees that have in themselves seed of their own kind, to be your meat, and to all the beasts of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to all that move upon the earth, and wherein there is life, that they may have to feed upon.” And it was so done. And God saw all the things that He had made, and they were very good. And the evening and morning were, the sixth day.

So the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the furniture of them. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.

Deus, qui mirabiliter creasti hominem, et mirabilius redemisti : da nobis, quaesumus, contra oblectamenta peccati, mentis ratione persistere; ut mereamur ad aeterna gaudia pervenire.
