Numbers 12 : 1-13

Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman he had married and they said, “Has YHVH only spoken through Moses? Has He not also spoken through us?” And YHVH heard.

Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than any man on the face of the earth. Yet suddenly YHVH said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, “Come out, all three of you, to the Tent of Meeting.” The three of them came out.

YHVH came down in the pillar of cloud and, standing at the door of the Tent, called Aaron and Miriam. They both went out and He said, “Listen carefully to what I say, ‘If there is a prophet among you, I reveal Myself to him in a vision and I speak to him in a dream. It is not so for My servant, Moses, My trusted steward in all My household.'”

“‘To Him I speak face to face, openly, and not in riddles, and he sees the presence of YHVH. Why then did you not fear to speak against My servant, against Moses?'” YHVH became angry with them and He departed. The cloud moved away from above the Tent and Miriam was there white as snow with leprosy. Aaron turned towards Miriam and he saw that she was leprous.

And he said to Moses, “My lord, I beg you, do not charge us with this sin that we have foolishly committed. Let her not be like the stillborn whose flesh is half-eaten when it comes from its mother’s womb.”

Then Moses cried to YHVH, “Heal her, o God, I beg of You.”

Revelations 21 : 1-5a

Then, I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and no longer was there any sea. I saw the new Jerusalem, the holy city, coming down from God, out of heaven, adorned as a bride prepared for her husband.

A loud voice came from the throne, “Here is the dwelling of God among mortals : He will pitch His tent among them, and they will be His people; He will be God-with-them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There shall be no more death or mourning, crying out or pain, for the world that was, has passed away.”

The One seated on the throne said, “See, I make all things new.”

Saturday, 26 July 2025 : 16th Week of Ordinary Time, Memorial of St. Joachim and St. Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Homily and Scripture Reflections)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Joachim and St. Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and therefore they were also the grandparents of the Lord, as Mary is the Mother of God, the Mother of Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Saviour. And we remember them today in particular because of their great faith and virtues in life, becoming good examples and role models in bringing up Mary to be a faithful and most worthy woman, to be the one whom God has shown His great favour to, in becoming the Mother and Bearer of the Son of God Most High Himself, to be the worthy Mother of God, the one through whom salvation has been revealed to all of us in this world.

Not much was known about the lives and activities of St. Joachim and St. Anne as both of them were not recorded in the four canonical Gospels, but they were recorded in other extra-Biblical sources and in the Apostolic traditions, as belonging to the tribe of Judah and Levi both. St. Joachim, the father of Mary came from the Tribe of Judah, and in some Apostolic traditions, it was believed that Jesus our Lord got His legal status as the Heir of David from both St. Joseph and Mary herself, and the latter through St. Joachim. Meanwhile, Mary’s mother, St. Anne, came from the Tribe of Levi, the tribe dedicated to the Lord to provide the members of the priests serving Him, and therefore, Mary had close connections to the priestly caste at that time through her mother.

According to tradition and our Catholic Dogma, we believe that Mary was conceived without the taint of original sin, the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the womb of her mother, St. Anne, and she was born to her and St. Joachim as the eldest daughter, and hence, according to the Law of Moses, she was presented to the Lord according to the sacred traditions, at the Temple of God. Mary henceforth remained as a truly faithful servant of God, living her life full of virtue and in the fullness of God’s grace, until the appointed time when the Archangel Gabriel appeared before her and telling her the role that she was to play as the Mother of the Son of God, the one to bear the Messiah within her. In that meantime, certainly she was brought up well by her parents, St. Joachim and St. Anne, whose memory we venerate today.

Let us all then look upon the readings of the Sacred Scriptures to reflect more carefully upon what the Lord has revealed to us, so that we can better appreciate today’s celebration and its relevance to our lives. In our first reading today, taken from the Book of Exodus, we heard of the moment when God established His Covenant with His people through Moses, the one that God had appointed to lead all of His people Israel to journey to the land promised for them. And there at Mount Sinai, the holy Mountain of God’s Presence, God made a pact with His people, that they all would be His people, His beloved ones, obeying His Law and commandments, rules and precepts as He would reveal to them through Moses, and that He would be their God, their loving Father and Master.

And Moses sealed that Covenant between God and His people at the Altar established there at Mount Sinai, with the blood of the sacrifices offered to God, and the blood sprinkled on the people as mark of the Covenant which God had made with all of them. This marked the solemn commitment between God and His people, which He had sealed and made clear before everyone, that Israel was indeed God’s beloved and chosen people, a people that He Himself had rescued and brought out from their slavery in the land of Egypt. That is what God had promised to His people and to their ancestors, and He showed His love and faithfulness through this commitment, showing how He will always take care of those whom He has loved so generously and wonderfully, without limits and ever patiently doing so at all times.

In our Gospel passage today, taken from the Gospel according to St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, we heard of the teachings of the Lord to His disciples using the parable of the kingdom of Heaven, comparing the kingdom of Heaven to the works of a man who sowed good seeds in his field, and how an enemy came and sowed bad seeds of weeds in between those good seeds. Those good plants and crops ended up growing together with the unwanted weeds, but the truth is that, as the Lord used this comparison to highlight His ideas and teachings, He wanted to tell everyone that God is truly so good and loving that He allowed both the good and evil ones, the righteous and the wicked to grow along, side by side with each other.

At that time, and as it is still valid today, certain plants considered as weeds were actually related if not similar to the crop plants that were planted in the field. The reason why those plants were considered as weeds were simply because they did not provide the farmers with the products that they desired, and they were therefore competing for the important resources and nutrients needed by the crops desired by the farmers. Some of those weeds might even be the less productive variants of the crops planted by the farmers. Therefore, one interpretation of this parable is such that it shows how the Lord our God is so kind, loving and compassionate to all, that no one is truly beyond God’s love and redemption, that even the wicked and worst of sinners have been given chances and opportunities by the Lord to come back to Him and embrace His love once again.

That was precisely what He had done with those whom He had called and chosen, first the Israelites, and now all of us who have been called by Him to be His disciples and His followers. All of us are sinners and have disobeyed Him, sinning and doing things against His will, and yet, He has always been so patient in loving us and showing us all His compassion and His enduring attention and desire to care for us, regardless of everything that we have done. He has always made His love, mercy and forgiveness available to us, giving us all the means for us to reach out to Him, sending us help and assistance in many means and avenues so that as many as us as possible can be saved and reunited with Him, and not be lost to Him to eternal damnation. And we should all indeed appreciate the great and enduring love that God has for each one of us, and for the Covenant He had made with all of us through His Son, Our Lord and Saviour.

Today, in conjunction with this celebration of this Feast of St. Joachim and St. Anne, as the Grandparents of Our Lord and Saviour, we also celebrate the World Day of the Grandparents and the Elderly, which was instituted by the late Pope Francis so that we may remember and honour our grandparents who have taken care of us and shown us their great love even in their old age, and also other elderly people in general, all those who have lived their lives well and have shown us their wisdom and good examples. Let us all pray and take good care of them in their golden years, and make sure that they are not forgotten and abandoned, just as the Lord Himself never abandoned any one of us. Let our love for our elderly and our grandparents be the hallmark and good examples of our Christian love and identity, at all times.

May the Lord continue to help us all to be good and faithful Christians in all things, and inspired by the good and virtuous examples of St. Joachim and St. Anne, let us all show genuine love to everyone, and in particular to our grandparents and the elderly people around us. May God bless our every good and loving efforts, at all times, now and forevermore. Amen.

The God of gods, YHVH has spoken; He summons the earth, from the rising of the sun to its setting. God has shone from Zion, perfect in beauty.

Gather before Me, My faithful ones, who made a Covenant with Me by sacrifice. The heavens will proclaim His sentence, for God Himself is the Judge.

Yet, offer to God a sacrifice of thanks, and fulfil your vows to the Most High. Call on Me in time of calamity; I will deliver you, and you will glorify Me.

YHVH swore to David a promise, and He will remain true to it : “I will keep your descendants on your throne.”

Exodus 24 : 3-8

Moses came and told the people all the words of YHVH and all His laws. The people replied with one voice : “Everything that YHVH has said, we shall do.”

Moses wrote down all the words of YHVH, then rose early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain with twelve raised stones for the twelve tribes of Israel. He then sent young men from among the sons of Israel to offer burnt offerings and sacrifice bullocks as peace offerings to YHVH.

And Moses took half the blood and put it in basins; and with the other half of the blood he sprinkled the altar. He then took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. They said, “All that YHVH said we shall do and obey.”

Moses then took the blood and sprinkled it on the people saying, “Here is the blood of the Covenant that YHVH has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

Let us now glorify illustrious men, the ancestors of our people. But now consider the godly men whose good deeds have not been forgotten. Those who came after them benefitted from the rich legacy they left; their race remained faithful to the Covenant, their children followed their example.

Their family will endure forever and never will its glory be tarnished. Their bodies will be buried in peace but their memory lives through generations. People will speak of their wisdom and the assembly will celebrate their praise.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today as we all listened to the words of the Sacred Scriptures, we are reminded that God has called upon each and every one of us to do His will, to do what He has entrusted to each one of us in a distinct and unique manner so that by our active participation in His will and works, we may truly obey what He has wanted us to do and that we may truly be fruitful in everything that we say and do. We are also reminded of God’s great and generous love, His persistent and enduring love and care for each and every one of us, the great love which He has lavished on us throughout time, all the kindness which He has provided so lovingly and selflessly all these while. Through this generous love of God, we are reminded that we are truly blessed and we should really appreciate this grace.

In our first reading today, we heard of the moment from the Book of Exodus when the Lord called Moses to be the one to deliver His message of hope and deliverance to His people, the Israelites being enslaved in Egypt, and to confront the Egyptians and their Pharaoh that they might set the people of God free. This happened as Moses was in the land of Midian, pasturing the sheep of his father-in-law Jethro during the time when he was in exile from Egypt after murdering an Egyptian slavemaster. He saw the Lord appearing in a miraculous burning bush and he encountered the Lord there at His mountain, and hearing God sending him out on the mission to rescue and lead the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt and to head to the Promised Land that He had promised their forefathers.

Moses received this mission from the Lord Who was acting to move His people out from suffering, because despite having endured a lot of tribulations and trials, the people of God were never forgotten and abandoned by God, Who have always loved them and remembered His Covenant with them. But the Egyptians and their Pharaoh chose to act with impunity and persecuted the Israelites through slavery and oppression. That was why, at the appointed time, according to His will, God moved and Moses was the one that He had chosen to bring His people out of the land of their misery, leading them to the land of milk and honey, a land of bounty and joy which God would grant to all of them.

Then, as we heard from our Gospel passage today taken from the Gospel according to St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, we are reminded that the Lord has revealed to us His will and intentions, all of which had been made clear and tangible to us through His Son, Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, the One through Whom we have seen the love of God manifested perfectly before each one of us. And through His obedience to His Father’s will, in showing us the perfect example of what it truly means to be faithful, Christ our Lord has shown us all how we can follow God faithfully in all things, becoming the role models and inspirations for one another, becoming the beacons of hope and light for everyone around us, in living our lives and faith most committedly at all times.

And that is what we are all reminded to do, to be ever more faithful and dedicated to God, to follow the Lord in all and every moments of our lives, and to listen to Him speaking to us in the depths of our hearts and minds. We should allow the Lord to lead us down the path that He wants us all to walk in so that we may truly be good and virtuous Christians at all times, in each and every one of our actions, works and deeds, in our every dealings and interactions. God has called us all to be His faithful disciples and followers, to go forth and proclaim His truth and Good News in every possible opportunities, in doing our best to glorify Him by our lives and our every contributions, even in the smallest things that we do in life.

Today, the Church also celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, remembering the occasion of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Holy Mother of God, to St. Simon Stock in the region of Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, from which the Carmelites get their name from, and which devotion would later be popularly known as the Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. At that time, during the time of the Crusades, Our Lady of Mount Carmel appeared and gave the now popular brown scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to St. Simon Stock who then popularised this devotion at about the same time when the Carmelite order began in the late twelfth century.

Ever since then, the Carmelites and their devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, among their many other charisms and works continued to work wonders for the salvation of souls. Even after they had to leave the Holy Land due to the failure of the Crusades, the Carmelites continued to do many great works for God and His people, calling more and more people to salvation in Him and through Him, echoing how Moses brought the people of Israel out of their slavery in Egypt and into the land promised to them and their ancestors. Therefore, we too are called to leave behind our slavery to sin and darkness, and to embrace wholeheartedly the new life and existence which God is providing to us all, and which He has always reassured us all, all these while.

May the Lord continue to guide and strengthen us all through the many challenges in life, through all of the difficult moments we may have to encounter in our paths and journeys. May He empower us all to be His worthy and committed disciples, allowing us to be truly good and worthy followers of His, to be the beacons of His light, truth and hope, now and always, forevermore. Amen.

Exodus 3 : 1-6, 9-12

Moses pastured the sheep of Jethro, his father-in-law, priest of Midian. One day he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the Mountain of God. The Angel of YHVH appeared to him by means of a flame of fire in the middle of a bush. Moses saw that although the bush was on fire it did not burn up.

Moses thought, “I will go and see this amazing sight, why is the bush not burning up?” YHVH saw that Moses was drawing near to look, and God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!” He replied, “Here I am.” YHVH said to him, “Do not come near; take off your sandals because the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

And God continued, “I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” Moses hid his face lest his eyes look on God. YHVH said, “The cry of the sons of Israel has reached Me and I have seen how the Egyptians oppress them. Go now! I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.”

Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the people of Israel out of Egypt?” God replied, “I will be with you and this will be the sign that I have sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”

Zechariah 2 : 14-17

Sing and rejoice, o daughter of Zion, for I am about to come, I shall dwell among you,” says YHVH. “On that day, many nations will join YHVH and be My people, but My dwelling is among you.”

The people of Judah will be for YHVH as His portion in His holy land. He will choose Jerusalem again. Keep still in YHVH’s presence, for He comes, having risen from His holy dwelling.

Saturday, 28 June 2025 : 12th Week of Ordinary Time, Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Homily and Scripture Reflections)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today, on the day after the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of His most loving Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. On this day we remember the loving and most Immaculate Heart of Mary who has always been filled with love for God, for her Son, the One entrusted to her to care, and also for all of us, all of whom had also been entrusted to her as her own children, that she may truly love us all as much as she has loved Jesus, her Son, Our Lord and Saviour. On this day we remember the Immaculate Heart of Mary, our loving Mother, which has been pierced by the sword of pain of seeing her own Son, Jesus, being made to suffer, to be crucified and to die on the Cross for faults that were not His own.

First of all, let us all look upon our Scripture readings today, beginning with our first reading today from the Book of the prophet Isaiah. In that passage from the prophet Isaiah we heard the words of the Lord speaking to His people reassuring them that He will bless them and give them all His grace and kindness, restoring them to honour and happiness, allowing them to rejoice once again after they had suffered indignity and difficulties earlier on in their experiences and those faced by their ancestors. Contextually, we must understand the events that happened during the time of the ministry of the prophet Isaiah and what happened beforehand in order to appreciate the full significance of what the Lord had been telling His people with this message of hope and reassurance.

The prophet Isaiah ministered to the people of the southern kingdom of Judah, the southern half of the divided kingdom of Israel, during the reign of King Ahaz and King Hezekiah, during which time and reign the northern kingdom of Israel, the northern half of the divided kingdom with most of the twelve tribes of Israel, was destroyed by the mighty forces of the Assyrian Empire which brought destruction upon the kingdom of Israel and its capital, Samaria, and many of the people living in that kingdom had been uprooted and exiled in distant, far-off lands of Assyria and beyond, with foreigners being brought in to dwell in the lands that used to belong to the people of God. The same misfortune and hardship would in time also happen to the kingdom of Judah as well, and the threat of the Assyrians also happened against the people of Judah.

Therefore, amidst all these hardships, the Lord promised His people of restoration and hope, of renewed trust and assurance that if they were all to have faith and trust in Him, He would deliver them all from their troubles and difficulties. If the people of God trusted in Him and followed His path, and sinned no more against Him, eventually they would be liberated from all those troubles and be led into the right path through His patient and ever consistent guidance and help. God does not want any of us to be lost to Him, and that is why He has always done everything He could to find us and to help us to return to Him, giving us hope and help, and one of the ways that He has done this, is through entrusting to us His own Blessed Mother to be our own Mother and intercessor.

Then, from our Gospel passage today taken from the Gospel according to St. Luke the Evangelist, we heard of the events that happened during the time when the Lord Jesus was still only twelve years old, when He was left behind in the Temple of Jerusalem while His family was already on their way back to their hometown in Nazareth. We heard how Mary and Joseph realised that the young Jesus were not with them in the entourage, and therefore went back all the way to Jerusalem in order to find Him. And once there, they found Jesus in deep discussion with the priests and the educated men there, and the latter were all astonished at His great wisdom and eloquence. Mary in particular was mentioned as having heard and kept all the things that she witnessed in her heart.

This is a reminder for all of us of the loving heart of a Mother, who has been entrusted with the love of her Son, the One that was told to her as the Son of God Most High, and yet, through her also the Son of Man. And through His great love for us all mankind, from His Most Sacred Heart, therefore Mary also share the same love that her Son has for us, in how she has constantly loved all of us, her own beloved children, entrusted to her by her own Son from His Cross. And from her Immaculate Heart, immaculate because as we all believe that Mary was conceived without any taint or corruption of original sin, and remained full of grace throughout her life, Mary has shown the love of God manifested to us, the beautiful love of a Mother all these while.

That is why as we may have noticed, how often Mary, our loving Mother has appeared to us in various occasions, particularly during times of great upheavals and distress, most famously in the sites of Guadalupe, which happened after the Spanish conquests of the Americas and also during the time of the Protestant reformation, and also Lourdes, which happened during time of great upheavals in Europe and traditional Christendom regarding the relationship between the Church and the state, and at Fatima in Portugal, which happened during the height of the First World War. These famous apparitions, together with other apparations of Mary serve to remind us all of just how much love that Mary our loving Mother has for all of us, and how much she wants to show this love, care and attention in order to help us to find our way to her Son, our Lord and Saviour.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us all hence entrust ourselves to our Blessed Mother, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, ever full of love for us and for her Son. Through her, let us all come ever closer to the path to salvation, knowing that through Mary is indeed the most direct path to her Son, Our Saviour and King. Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, our Mother and intercessor, pray for all of us always, and may your constant love for us, from your Immaculate Heart continue to inspire us all to love one another in the same manner as well.
