Cardinals Update : Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, President Emeritus of the Governatorate of the Vatican City State and the President Emeritus of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State (Italy), turned 80, ceases to be a Cardinal-elector

On Saturday, 3 January 2015, Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, Cardinal-Deacon of S. Maria Liberatrice a Monte Testaccio, President Emeritus of the Governatorate of the Vatican City State and the President Emeritus of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State (Italy), turned 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he lost his right to vote in any future conclave. Cardinal Darmaatmadja was born at Novara in Italy on 3 January 1935.

Cardinal Lajolo was made Cardinal-Deacon of S. Maria Liberatrice a Monte Testaccio by Pope Benedict XVI in the 2007 Consistory of Cardinals on 24 November 2007, the second Consistory of his pontificate. Cardinal Lajolo was made a Cardinal in honour of his position as the President of both the Governatorate of the Vatican City State and the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State. He was for a long time involved in the works of the Roman Curia and in the relations between the Church and the states.

On Tuesday, 2 December 2014, Cardinal Tarcisio Pietro Evasio Bertone, S.D.B., Cardinal-Bishop of Frascati, Cardinal Secretary State Emeritus of the Secretariat of State and the Chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church of Apostolic Camera or the Cardinal Camerlengo (Italy), turned 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he lost his right to vote in any future conclave. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone was born in Romano Canavese, Italy on 2 December 1934.

Cardinal Bertone was made Cardinal-Priest of S. Maria Ausiliatrice in Via Tuscolana pro hac vice Title by Pope St. John Paul II in the 2003 Consistory of Cardinals on 21 October 2003, the ninth and last Consistory of his pontificate. Cardinal Bertone was made a Cardinal in honour of his position as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Genoa, a position which he held from 2002 to 2006. Before that, Cardinal Bertone was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Vercelli and also the Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, working closely with its Prefect, the then Cardinal Joseph Alois Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI).

On Tuesday, 23 September 2014, Cardinal Franc Rode, C.M., Cardinal-Deacon of S. Francesco Saverio alla Garbatella, Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and for Societies of Apostolic Life (Slovenia), turned 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he lost his right to vote in any future conclave. Cardinal Franc Rode was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia on 5 September 1934.

Cardinal Rode was made Cardinal-Deacon of S. Francesco Saverio alla Garbatella by Pope Benedict XVI in the 2006 Consistory of Cardinals on 24 March 2006, the first Consistory of his pontificate. On Friday, 5 September 2014, Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes, Cardinal-Deacon of S. Lorenzo in Piscibus, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council ‘Cor Unum’ (Germany), turned 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he lost his right to vote in any future conclave. Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes was born in Kirchhundem, Germany on 5 September 1934.

Cardinal Cordes was made Cardinal-Deacon of S. Maria Ausiliatrice in Via Tuscolana by Pope Benedict XVI in the 2007 Consistory of Cardinals on 24 November 2007, the second Consistory of his pontificate. Cardinal Cordes was made a Cardinal in honour of his position as the President of the Pontifical Council ‘Cor Unum’, the branch of the Roman Curia focused on the efforts of the Holy See in the field of human and Christian development, involved in various charitable acts and humanitarian relief efforts, a position he held from 1995 to 2010. Before that, Cardinal Cordes was the Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Laity from 1980 to 1995, and before that, the Auxiliary Bishop of Paderborn (Germany), from 1975 to 1980.

On Monday, 1 September 2014, Cardinal Paolo Sardi, Cardinal-Deacon of S. Maria Ausiliatrice in Via Tuscolana, Cardinal-Patron of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta (Italy), turned 80, and therefore, according to the rules written in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, he lost his right to vote in any future conclave.

Cardinal Paolo Sardi was made Cardinal-Deacon of S. Maria Ausiliatrice in Via Tuscolana by Pope Benedict XVI in the 2010 Consistory of Cardinals on 20 November 2010, the third Consistory of his pontificate. Cardinal Sardi was made a Cardinal in honour of his position as the Patron of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, also known as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, one of the most prominent and important charity and public action arm of the Church, the direct and current successor of the Knights Hospitallers established during the era of the Crusades, a position which he held from 2009 to the present day.

Passing of Cardinal Bernard Agre, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire/Ivory Coast) at the age of 88

Cardinal Bernard Agre, Cardinal-Priest of S. Giovanni Crisostomo a Monte Sacro Alto has passed away on Monday, 9 June 2014 at the age of 88. He was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Abidjan, the principal diocese of Ivory Coast or Cote d’Ivoire, from 1994 and 2006. Prior to this he was the long time Bishop of Man from 1968 to 1992 and as Bishop of Yamoussoukro from 1992 to 1994, in Cote d’Ivoire.

Cardinal Agre was created Cardinal in 2001 by Pope St. John Paul II in his eighth Cardinal creation consistory on 21 February 2001. His motto was Etre Tout a Tous, which means “Be all things to all”. Passing of Cardinal Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Bangalore (India) and Protodeacon Emeritus of the College of Cardinals at the age of 90

Cardinal Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy, Cardinal-Priest of S. Maria delle Grazie alle Fornaci fuori Porta Cavalleggeri has passed away on last Monday, 2 June 2014 at the age of 90. He was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Bangalore, one of the large Archdioceses in India, from 1968 to 1971, and then was for a very long time, the member of the Roman Curia, as the Secretary of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith from 1973 to 1985, and then as Prefect for the Congregation for Oriental Churches from 1985 to 1991, and eventually as the Protodeacon of the College of Cardinals from 1993 to 1996.

Cardinal Lourdusamy was created Cardinal in 1985 by Pope St. John Paul II in his third Cardinal creation consistory on 25 May 1985. Cardinal Francesco Monterisi was made Cardinal-Deacon of S. Paolo alla Regola by Pope Benedict XVI in the 2010 Consistory of Cardinals on 20 November 2010, the third Consistory of his pontificate. Passing of Cardinal Jose da Cruz Policarpo, Cardinal-Patriarch Emeritus of Lisbon (Portugal) at the age of 78

Cardinal Jose da Cruz Policarpo, Cardinal-Priest of S. Antonio in Campo Marzio has passed away on Wednesday, 12 March 2014 at the age of 78. He was the Patriarch of Lisbon and therefore the Primate of Portugal, from 1998 to 2013, and was recently retired from his position.

New Cardinals and their assigned Churches in Rome, Consistory of 22 February 2014

On the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, on Saturday, 22 February 2014, the Vicar of Christ and Bishop of Rome, Leader of the Universal Church, Pope Francis elevates 19 new Cardinals to the Cardinalate by the bestowal of the red biretta, 15 of which are of the order of priests (Cardinal Priests) and 4 of which are of the order of deacons (Cardinal Deacons).

3 of the new Cardinals are non-electors, being above the age of 80, appointed purely as honorary Cardinals for their service to the Church, and the other 16 Cardinals are voting-age Cardinals (below 80), and will be eligible to vote for the next Pope in the next Conclave until they reach the age of 80.
