Mark 10 : 32-45
At that time, Jesus and His disciples were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and He was walking ahead. The Twelve were anxious, and those who followed were afraid. Once more Jesus took the Twelve aside to tell them what was to happen to Him.
“You see we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be given over to the chief priests and the teachers of the Law. They will condemn Him to death, and hand Him over to the foreigners, who will make fun of Him, spit on Him, scourge Him, and finally kill Him; but three days later He will rise.”
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to Him, “Master, we want You to grant us what we are going to ask of You.” And He said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” They answered, “Grant us to sit, one at Your right hand and one at Your left, when You come in Your glory.”
But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink, or be baptised in the way I am baptised?” They answered, “We can.” And Jesus told them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and you will be baptised in the way that I am baptised; but to sit at My right hand or at My left is not Mine to grant. It has been prepared for others.”
On hearing this, the other ten were angry with James and John. Jesus then called them to Him and said, “As you know, the so-called rulers of the nations act as tyrants, and their great ones oppress them. But it shall not be so among you; whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you shall make himself slave of all.”
“Think of the Son of Man, Who has not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life to redeem many.”

Psalm 147 : 12-13, 14-15, 19-20
Exalt the Lord, o Jerusalem; praise your God, o Zion! For He strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses your children within you.
He grants peace on your borders and feeds you with the finest grain. He sends His command to the earth and swiftly runs His word.
It is He Who tells Jacob His words, His laws and decrees to Israel. This He has not done for other nations, so His laws remain unknown to them. Alleluia!

Psalm 110 : 1-2, 5-6, 9 and 10c
Alleluia! I thank the Lord with all my heart. In the council of the just, in the assembly. The works of the Lord are great and pondered by all who delight in them.
Always mindful of His covenant, He provides food for those who fear Him. He shows His people the power of His arm by giving them the lands of other nations.
He has sent His people deliverances and made with them a covenant forever. His holy Name is to be revered! To Him belongs everlasting praise.

Psalm 54 : 7, 8, 9-10a, 10b-11, 23
I said, “If I had wings like a dove, I would fly away and be at rest.”
I would seek a home in the desert.
I would hurry to find a cave for shelter from the tempest. O Lord, shatter their plans.
In the city I see strife and violence; day and night they prowl about its walls, while inside, evil prevails.
Place your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you, for He never allows the upright to fall.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we heard the story of how the Lord Jesus cast out evil spirits from a boy who was possessed and became deaf and mute because of that. The disciples of Jesus tried to cast out the demons but they were not able to do so. And Jesus told them all, that those kinds of demons can only be removed through prayer.
What does this mean, brothers and sisters in Christ? It means that with faith in the Lord, everything is possible for us, as through faith we receive the power and the authority which our Lord Jesus gave to all those to whom He deems worthy to receive His grace and power, and it is by that power and authority that He has cast out those demons and those evil spirits.
Why were the Apostles unable to cast out those evil spirits on their own? It is likely because they still had uncertainties and doubts in their hearts. Even when they had witnessed firsthand the power and wonders of God shown through Jesus and the miracles they had seen themselves, in the feeding of many thousands with just five loaves of bread and two fish, in the healing of the sick and the possessed, and in the resurrection of those who were dead, their hearts were still uncertain, and their minds were still blocked from truly understanding the truth of God.
And because of that doubt, they were unable to truly draw on the power and authority of the Lord, and in their doubt and uncertainty, they stumbled and failed. But this did not mean that their faith and efforts were meaningless, but rather, it is what the Lord wanted to teach His disciples, that following Him does not mean to seek for personal glory, or for praise or fame or for glory of the world.
Many people at that time, especially among the pagans were going around from places to places, gaining fame for themselves or acquire a following and a cult, by their actions that supposedly show the supernatural and the things that amazed many who saw them. And these claimed their own might and power in doing all those wondrous things and actions.
But this is not what Jesus wanted His disciples and His faithful ones to do. As all of us Christians, we do not serve ourselves, our own needs or our own desires, but instead all of us serve the greater glory and the greater purpose of our Lord. It was not by our own greatness and power that we have achieved great things, but instead, it is only through the grace of God, that the Lord has allowed us to perform all of these great things and wonders.
Today, as we heard this message from the Scriptures, let us all keep in mind this fact, that when we are tempted to satisfy our own personal greed and desire, and when we are tempted to do things to glorify ourselves, let us not lose sight of the truth and let us be resolute in persisting and resisting the devil and all of his false promises. It was after all because he was playing around with our human vulnerabilities and weakness to temptation that he had been able to lure us all into sin and therefore towards the risk of damnation in hell.
Let us be mindful in our lives, that each and every one of us may find our way to the Lord, by showing love in our actions, by obeying the Law which God has given us, the commandments of love, as He had commanded the disciples and thus all of His faithful ones to do. And in this, we should reflect back on the reading we received from the Epistle according to St. James.
St. James mentioned that we all should live humbly and filled with love, and not with jealousy or hatred. We should not show off or be prideful, but instead, as the children of God, we all should be humble and be committed to love and help one another instead. And filled with love, may our actions be worthy in the sight of God, that when He comes again in His glory, He may gather us all in and bring us together into His eternal glory in heaven. You take away their breath, they expire and return to dust. When You send forth Your Spirit, they are created, and the face of the earth is renewed.
May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in His works! May my song give Him pleasure, as the Lord gives me delight.

Acts 17 : 15, 22 – Acts 18 : 1
Paul was taken as far as Athens by his escort, who then returned to Beroea with instructions for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible.
Then Paul stood up in the Areopagus hall and said, “Athenian citizens, I note that in every way you are very religious. As I walked around looking at your shrines, I even discovered an altar with this inscription : To an unknown God. Now, what you worship as unknown, I intend to make known to you.”
“God, Who made the world and all that is in it, does not dwell in sanctuaries made by human hands, being as He is Lord of heaven and earth. Nor does His worship depend on anything made by human hands, as if He were in need. Rather it is He Who gives life and breath and everything else to everyone.”
“From one stock He created the whole human race to live throughout all the earth, and He fixed the time and the boundaries of each nation. He wanted them to seek Him by themselves, even if it were only by groping for Him, succeed in finding Him.”
“Yet He is not far from any one of us. For in Him we live and move and have our being, as some of your poets have said : ‘for we too are His offspring.’ If we are indeed God’s offspring, we ought not to think of divinity as something like a statue of gold or silver or stone, a product of human art and imagination.”
“But now God prefers to overlook this time of ignorance and He calls on all people to change their ways. He has already set a day on which He will judge the world with justice through a Man He has appointed. And, so that all may believe it, He has just given a sign by raising this Man from the dead.”
When they heard Paul speak of a resurrection from death, some made fun of him, while others said, “We must hear you on this topic some other time.” At that point Paul left. But a few did join him and believed. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus court, a woman named Damaris, and some others.
After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.

Proclaim His salvation day after day. Recall His glory among the nations, tell all the peoples His wonderful deeds.
Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!” He will judge the peoples with justice.

All Your works will give You thanks; all Your saints, o Lord, will praise You. They will tell of the glory of Your kingdom and speak of Your power.

Let my mouth speak in praise of the Lord, let every creature bless His Holy Name, forever and ever.
