Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today the Church celebrates the occasion of the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, the Mother of God, of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. And as we listened to the words of the Sacred Scriptures, each and every one of us today are reminded of the need for all of us to follow the good examples of Mary in how she herself has lived her life faithfully and obeyed the Lord in all things. Mary is not only just honoured because she is the Mother of God and the Mother of Our Lord and Saviour, but also because her faithful example can indeed lead us all with certainty towards her Son, and if we walk with her, through her guidance and intercession, we can certainly find the best way towards Heaven.

In our first reading today, from the reading for this Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, we heard from the Epistle of St. Paul the Apostle to the Church and the faithful people of God in Galatia and Ephesus in which he reminded them all of how each and every one of them were the children of God, Who is their loving Father, the One Who has always cared for them, showing them all His providence and love, His compassion and forgiveness. And therefore, having been shown such generous love and compassion, that is why all of them and hence, all of us whom the Lord had called and chosen, we ought to show that same attitude and love in our own daily living, in how we interact with one another, in showing genuine love and care to everyone around us.

Then, all of us are reminded that this is what Mary herself had shown in her life, and why again she is indeed our role model and example to follow, because Mary’s love and compassion is a reflection of God’s love for us, and she is indeed showing us all what it truly means to be loving and compassionate as a Christian, as a follower and disciple of the Lord. And her great love for her Son, her selfless giving of herself, all that she has done in committing herself wholeheartedly, all these had shown us the perfect Christian discipleship and path, and which we should be inspired to follow and walk through as well. Today as we honour her Most Holy Name, let us all seek Mary as the role model and example, inspiration and as someone whose Name we can utter whenever we encounter difficulties and hardships in life.

From our Gospel passage today, taken from the Gospel passage according to St. Luke the Evangelist, we heard of the moment when Mary visited Elizabeth, her cousin who was then heavily pregnant just as Mary herself by then had also conceived, by the power of the Holy Spirit, the Saviour and Son of God within her. And we heard how the very moment that Mary greeted Elizabeth, the baby within her, St. John the Baptist, jumped and rejoiced in Elizabeth’s womb, and Elizabeth recognised her, as the Mother of the Saviour, the Mother of God Himself, coming to her with the Good News of the world’s salvation. And then we heard how they praised God for everything that He had done for their sake, all the providence and love that He had shown them and the whole world.

We can see how profound this moment and greeting is in the story of our salvation, and it is also a kind reminder for us that why we honour Mary and put her in a very important place in our Christian faith because of the unique role that she has been entrusted with, and her full obedience, faith and trust in the Lord, which made her to be the holy vessel through whom the Saviour of the world would enter into our presence and midst. And this was why the Lord prepared her well in advance, setting her aside to be made hallowed, worthy and suitable to bear within her, the Divine Lord Himself, because the One Whom she bore into this world was not just merely a Man, but is also God Himself, incarnate in the flesh, both Divine and Man, in the person of Jesus Christ.

That was why Mary was conceived without original sin, by the singular grace of God, set aside as the perfect and worthy vessel to bear the Son of God Himself. And throughout her life, Mary was full of grace, as she remained fully committed and aligned with God, not suffering any taint or corruption of sin. And this is also why, just as her Son’s Name is truly sacred and holy, therefore, Mary’s Name is truly holy and sacred as well. And we honour her name just as we honour someone’s mother and if we respect that someone, then we will respect that person’s mother too. We cannot truly respect and love someone if we do not love that person’s mother or other persons significant to that person. In the same way therefore, we cannot truly love the Lord Jesus unless we also love and respect His mother as well.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, and more importantly, the fact is that the Lord Himself has entrusted His own Mother to us all, as our own Mother, for from His Cross, at the moment of His supreme sacrifice, when He laid down His life on that Cross for our salvation and redemption, He looked upon His Mother Mary and His beloved disciple, St. John the Apostle, and He spoke to them, telling St. John that he would be a son to Mary, His Mother, and also to His Mother, that she would take St. John as her own son. Through this symbolic action of entrustment, with St. John the Apostle representing all of us the disciples and followers of our Lord, and all of mankind, the Lord Himself has given to us His own Mother to be our own Mother, and us as children to Mary, who would henceforth treat us as her own.

Therefore, brothers and sisters in Christ, let us all entrust ourselves to Mary, our loving Mother, who has loved us so much and has always been concerned about us that she has always interceded for us, her own beloved children, pleading for our sake before her Son’s Throne in Heaven. Let us all therefore seek Mary’s help and guidance, asking for her to help us and guide us in our journey towards salvation in her Son, and trust in her ever great and wonderful love for us. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

So why do you pay attention to the speck in your brother’s eye, while you have a log in your eye, and are not conscious of it?”

“How can you say to your neighbour, ‘Friend, let me take this speck out of your eye,’ when you cannot remove the log in your own? You hypocrite! First remove the log from your own eye, and then you will see clearly enough to remove the speck from your neighbour’s eye.”

From Paul, Apostle of Christ Jesus, by a command of God, our Saviour, and of Christ Jesus, our Hope, to Timothy, my true son in the faith. May God the Father, and Christ Jesus, Our Lord, give you grace, mercy and peace.

I give thanks to Christ Jesus, Our Lord, Who is my strength, Who has considered me trustworthy, and appointed me to His service, although I had been a blasphemer, a persecutor and a fanatical enemy. However, He took mercy on me, because I did not know what I was doing when I opposed the faith; and the grace of Our Lord was more than abundant, together with faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today the Church celebrates the occasion of the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, in which moment we praise and honour Mary, the Mother of God and our Mother, who has always been with us, interceding for us and helping us all throughout our journey of faith and life, by her constant and persistent intercessions and other efforts through which she had reached out to us and calling on us to follow her on the way towards her Son, Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, through Whom we shall gain the assurance of salvation and eternal life. Through Mary, whose memory and holy Name we honour today, we have the surest and best path towards God and His grace, His salvation and light.

In our first reading today, taken from either the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians or to the Ephesians, we are all reminded by the Apostle St. Paul of the nature of the coming of the salvation of God through His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, who had been brought into this world via the cooperation and acceptance which Mary had given to the whole plan of God’s salvation for all of us mankind. Mary has resolutely said yes and embraced wholeheartedly the role that she would play in the entire plan of God’s salvation, when she responded to the Archangel Gabriel, that she is indeed the handmaid of the Lord, and let all things be done to her according to His will. Through Mary’s faith and obedience therefore, God’s salvation had become incarnate and tangible to us through Christ.

Not only that, but as St. Paul also mentioned to both the Ephesians and the Galatians, through this coming of Christ, the Saviour Whom God had sent into this world, all of us through our sharing in Christ’s human nature, have become brothers and sisters to one another, and become the adopted children of God. And through that, we have been given the share in the glorious resurrection of Our Lord, and receive the assurance of eternal life beyond this world, by He Who has conquered death for us, triumphant and victorious against the forces of evil and wicked ones who sought to destroy us and lead us into the darkness. And Mary, as the Mother of God, has been standing by her Son, and all of us, whom the Lord had entrusted to her as her own children.

And if the evil forces, the demons and spirits are afraid of the Lord, because they know that He is truly the Lord and Master over all things, and that no matter what they do, they cannot overcome Him, fearing the very mention of His Name, therefore, by association to her Son, Mary’s holy Name is equally feared and has the same power over those evil spirits as well. By invoking the Most Holy Name of Mary, we bring into our presence the protection of the Mother of God herself, who has always been our greatest ally and intercessor, ever praying for and helping us sinners, guiding us all towards her beloved Son, our Lord and Saviour. She has also constantly given us all the inspiration and the help to make us find our way towards the Lord and His salvation.

In our Gospel passage today, we heard of the account of the visitation by Mary to her cousin Elizabeth, when Mary came to the place where the latter stayed having heard from the Archangel Gabriel that she was pregnant with a child, about six month earlier than Mary herself. Both of these cases involved miraculous conception and pregnancy, with Elizabeth’s case being that the pregnancy happened when she was already old and definitely beyond child-bearing age. In the meantime, Mary became pregnant without having relationship with a man, and she was not yet married to Joseph, her spouse-to-be at the moment of her conceiving her Son. This was because the Lord Himself has made the conception possible by the power of the Holy Spirit, that the Son of God, the Word of God Incarnate has entered into our world through Mary’s cooperation and faith.

We heard in that account how the Lord had truly performed great and wonderful deeds through these two women, and how He has rescued and brought them out of their respective predicaments. The Lord showed His power and might to rescue all those who have faith in Him, and He proved it to all of us through these great wonders and miracles. He will not abandon His faithful and beloved ones to the darkness, and He will always be by our side, not leaving us alone. We have heard how Mary received the great grace of God, blessed by her faith and obedience, and also the unique and special role that she has in the story of our salvation and liberation from the power of evil and darkness, through her Motherhood of Christ, Our Lord and Saviour.

Therefore, brothers and sisters in Christ, as we reflect on all these from the Scriptures and on the role that Mary has played in the story of our salvation, let us all continue to honour and respect her, as the Mother of God and also as our loving Mother, who has always looked kindly upon us, caring for each and every one of us, guiding and helping us to find our way towards the salvation in God. Mary has always committed herself to us as our loving Mother, ever always wanting us all to repent from our sinful attitudes and actions so that we may be fully reunited with her Son, and gain a place in the eternal life and receive the fullness of inheritance of what He has promised to each and every one of us from the very beginning.

May Mary, the Mother of God, the Mother of Our Lord and Saviour, our loving Mother, continue to help and intercede for our sake before her Son in Heaven, ever concerned and ever praying for us, giving us all every possible help and means for us to come closer to the Lord. May she continue to inspire us all to live our lives worthily and well in all things and at all opportunities. In times of trouble let us continue to invoke the Most Holy Name of Mary, our Mother, calling sincerely and earnestly upon her to come and help us, to assist and intercede for us all. Holy Mary, Mother of God, our loving Mother, pray for us sinners, now and always, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

1 Corinthians 8 : 1b-7, 11-13

We know that all of us have knowledge, but knowledge puffs up, while love builds. If anyone thinks that he has knowledge, he does not yet know as he should know, but if someone loves God, he has been known by God.

Can we, then, eat meat from offering to the idols? We know that an idol is without existence and that there is no God but one. People speak indeed of other gods in heaven and on earth and, in this sense, there are many gods and lords. Yet for us, there is but one God, the Father, from Whom everything comes, and to Whom we go. And there is one Lord, Christ Jesus, through Whom everything exists, and through Him, we exist.

Not everyone, however, has that knowledge. For some persons, who, until recently, took the idols seriously, the food remains linked to the idol, and eating of it stains their conscience, which is unformed. Then, with your knowledge, you would have caused your weak brother or sister to perish, the one for whom Christ died. When you disturb the weak conscience of your brother or sister, and sin against them, you sin against Christ Himself. Therefore, if any food will bring my brother to sin, I shall never eat this food, lest my brother or sister fall.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, in which we honour Mary and her most holy name, which like that of her Son, Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, is feared by the devil, our great enemy, who has always despised her for having taken so many away from his clutches, because of all of her efforts in reaching out to us, all these time, in trying to bring us back once again towards the Lord, our Saviour, her Son. Mary has always cared for all of us, whom her Son had entrusted to us to be her own, and hence, we have her as our own beloved mother. Through her many efforts and outreach towards us, Mary had brought so many among us and our predecessors out of the darkness of sin and evil, and back into the path towards the salvation and eternal life in her Son.

In our first reading today, we heard several possible readings for today, the Epistles written by St. Paul the Apostle, either from the Scriptures or the day or the readings for this Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, and in them we heard reminders for all of us that ultimately, it was by the coming of the salvation of God through Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Our Lord, that we have been saved and guaranteed the assurance of heavenly glory, if we continue to be faithful to Him, and if we kept on obeying His Law and commandments, and walk faithfully in His path, then we shall truly be blessed and empowered by Him, to be His disciples and to be the shining beacons and examples of His love and truth in this world.

It is a reminder for all of us today that God is and should be our focus and emphasis in life, and it was through His Son that God has rescued us from our fated destruction and damnation, because His coming into this world opened up for us all the path of liberation and freedom, the light that pierced through the darkness that surrounded all of us. And what about Mary and the role that she plays in all of this? Mary is the one through whom we have the surest and most direct path towards the salvation in her Son, Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and that is why, we have the famous phrase, ‘Ad Jesum per Mariam’ or ‘To Jesus through Mary’, which highlights to us the very important role that Mary has in helping all of us, her beloved adopted children, in our path towards redemption.

We must all understand clearly that Mary did not save us all by herself, or that her Most Holy Name is holy and sacred by her own right and volition. Instead, Mary is indeed Holy, her Name truly Holy and wonderful, and feared by the devil and all of his wicked forces, because of her faith in God, her righteous and most exemplary actions and life, and her connection and love that she has for her Son, Our Lord and Saviour, as the Mother of God, and also for all of us, her beloved children, through which not only that the devil is constantly reminded of the final defeat that he will face in the end, but also how often he had been thwarted in his efforts to condemn souls into hell, and to corrupt the children of mankind because of the great efforts of Mary, the Mother of God, and our mother.

And since Mary is the Mother of God, and the mother of a King is truly honoured in the kingdom in the past, Mary is truly a mighty Queen by association with her Son, Our Lord and King, and we ought to honour her and to treat her and her Name with utmost deference and respect. That is why, just like the Most Holy Name of her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, we must also honour the Most Holy Name of Mary, as a name that is truly powerful and effective against the attacks and depredations by the forces of evil, invoking our loving Mother’s protection and intercession on our behalf, that God will be moved to protect us from the attacks and the oppressions by the forces of evil being present all around each and every one of us.

But even more so than her connection to her Son, as the Mother of God and of our Lord and Saviour, we honour Mary because of her virtues and righteousness. It was her total obedience to God that allowed her to play such an important part in the history of our salvation. Her ‘yes’ to the Archangel Gabriel and her commitment to the missions entrusted to her showed unto us the perfect role model and inspiration for all of us to follow in how we ourselves should be living our lives, that is with faith and commitment to God. Mary’s faith and commitment should be the strong inspiration that encourage us all to be following God wholeheartedly in the same way as well, and this is yet another reason why the devil fears her so much, because there is nothing in her that he can find any blame with. Sin has no power over her, and hence neither did the devil ever have any dominion over her.

And through her works, even now from her heavenly throne, beside that of her Son, Mary continues to help bring many more of us to the salvation and eternal life assured to us by her Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Mary has never ceased to intercede for all of us sinners, having always shown her love and care for us, just as her numerous apparitions and miraculous presence have shown us, how she truly wants all of us to come ever closer to the throne of her Son’s mercy, to be forgiven our many sins and wickedness, so that we may once again be worthy of God, and be no longer distant or separated away from Him, entering into renewed relationship with Him, one that is founded upon the strong and enduring love that we ought to have in Him, and that our faith in Him will always be strong.

Today, let us all ask our blessed and loving Mother Mary, whose Most Holy Name we honour and glorify, to pray for us always, to intercede for us sinners, that we may be forgiven our many sins, and be reconciled with her Son, Our most loving Saviour, our God and Creator. May Mary, Holy Queen and Mother, continue to guide and help us all in our journey of faith and life, that we may always come ever closer to the glory and joy of Heaven, and distance ourselves from the wickedness and evils of sin. May God be with us too, and may He empower us all to follow Him ever more faithfully, at all times. Amen.

Luke 6 : 12-19

At that time, Jesus went out into the hills to pray, spending the whole night in prayer with God. When day came, He called His disciples to Him, and chose Twelve of them, whom He called ‘Apostles’ : Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alpheus and Simon called the Zealot; Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who would be the traitor.

Coming down the hill with them, Jesus stood in an open plain. Many of His disciples were there, and a large crowd of people, who had come from all parts of Judea and Jerusalem, and from the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon. They gathered to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases. And the people troubled by unclean spirits were cured.

The entire crowd tried to touch Him, because of the power that went out from Him and healed them all.

Luke 1 : 39-47

Mary then set out for a town in the hill country of Judah. She entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leapt in her womb.

Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and, giving a loud cry, said, “You are most blessed among women; and blessed is the Fruit of your womb! How is it, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby within me suddenly leapt for joy. Blessed are you, who believed that the Lord’s word would come true!”

And Mary said, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God, my Saviour!”
