Isaiah 40 : 1-5, 9-11

Be comforted, My people, be strengthened, says your God. Speak to the heart of Jerusalem, proclaim to her that her time of bondage is at an end, that her guilt has been paid for, that from the hand of YHVH she has received double punishment for all her iniquity.

A voice cries, “In the wilderness prepare the way for YHVH. Make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley will be raised up; every mountain and hill will be laid low. The stumbling blocks shall become level and the rugged places smooth. The glory of YHVH will be revealed, and all mortals together will see it; for the mouth of YHVH has spoken.”

Go up onto the high mountain, messenger of Good News to Zion, lift up your voice with strength, fear not to cry aloud when you tell Jerusalem and announce to the cities of Judah : Here is your God! Here comes your God with might; His strong arm rules for Him; His reward is with Him, and here before Him is His booty.

Like a shepherd He tends His flock : He gathers the lambs in His arms, He carries them in His bosom, gently leading those that are with young.

Sunday, 3 January 2016 : Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord (Homily and Scripture Reflections)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we glorify God and praise Him together in the occasion of His glorious moment of Epiphany, the time when He revealed Himself to the people, the true nature of His coming and His birth through the Three Magi, or the Three Wise Kings of the east and their respective gifts, each of which bear very significant symbolism of His nature and truth.

Today, we heard the well-known story of how the three people, either learned and wise men or kings from the east, came to Bethlehem following the very bright star that appeared during about the time of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, and seeing that star, they knew that someone with great power and authority is coming into the world although they did not know who this One would be.

They came to Bethlehem from their faraway country, braving difficult conditions and tough travel, long journeys and arduous paths in order to seek the King Who was prophesied to come into the world. And this is why, the star in our Christian teachings and understanding, specifically the Star of Bethlehem is the symbol of faith, for it represented the faith of the Magi who was though not counted among the chosen people of God, the Israelites, but they believed and made the effort to come and pay obeisance to Him.

And the Magi came to Bethlehem, found the Baby Jesus in the manger with His mother Mary and with Joseph, His foster father. The Magi then paid Him homage and honour due to a King, and not just a King, for we see their offerings to Jesus, which gave us a revelation of Who Jesus really is. These are the gifts of gold, of frankincense, and of myrrh.

Gold is a precious metal which had been revered and treasured since the ancient times due to its beauty and lustre. The magnificent shine of gold and its incorruptibility had been the properties that many people had used to denote something that is great and precious, and over time, the use of gold denotes wealth, greatness, and then in particular, its use is regulated and sometimes reserved only for the king and the royalty.

Yes, the gift of gold by the Magi to the Baby Jesus revealed to us all, to all mankind that even though as a fragile Baby, the Son of Man, He was born among animals in the filth of a stable, in great poverty, but He was truly a King, King of all kings, Who did not choose to be born in pomp and grandeur, but to be born among His people, as all men were.

The gift of gold revealed Jesus to the world as a King, not as one of the kings of the world who flaunted their wealth and power to sustain their prestige and position, but as the true King Whose authority is absolute over the whole world. And yet, He chose to lower Himself and humble Himself, by being born in such a simple place and in such a circumstance, because He loves us all and He came into this world with a mission, which I will elaborate further in a while.

Then the three Magi also offered frankincense to the Baby Jesus, a curious gift indeed for a baby. But frankincense represented yet another aspect of Jesus that was revealed to the world through that gift. Incense were usually made from natural sources such as dried amber or tree secretions, and other sources such as fragrant wood materials that were then burnt as either perfume to remove bad odour or as offerings for the gods and the idols.

And frankincense is the finest quality incense that were around, and the gift of frankincense to the Baby Jesus revealed to all mankind, that He is God, a Divine being surpassing everything else. Yes, indeed, for He is the One Who created everything that ever existed, now exists and will exist. He is the one and only true God, to Whom only all honour, praise and glory should be directed to.

And just as incense is used in our worship, in the celebration of the Holy Mass and on other occasions, as the symbol of the offering of our prayer to God and as a way to honour the Lord our God, thus the Magi offered the finest frankincense to Jesus to worship Him, the one true King of all kings, and Who is also the Lord God of all the universe, Who had chosen to come into the world, again for a mission that is related to the last gift of the Magi.

The last gift is that of myrrh, a natural material used for preservation purposes, especially for burial in the preservation of the body of the dead before they were buried. This is certainly a gift that is completely out of place considered that it was given after a Baby was born, but this gift, just as that of the gold and the frankincense, was equally important, as this revealed to the whole world, just what Christ was to do in order to save it.

The gift of myrrh reminded us all about the mission which Jesus had taken upon Himself as He came into this world. It is a premonition of His suffering and death, which would take place at the very end of His earthly ministry, when He was rejected by His own people and were punished for the sins of the people, including the sins of those who have persecuted and rejected Him.

Yes, the gift of myrrh symbolised the death which Christ would pass through in order to save us and rescue us from our own fate of facing death, that is the eternal death and separation from the Lord. By His death which we share in our death in Him, had liberated all of us from the snares of death and gave us all a new hope, for now we know that through Jesus, death has no final say over us.

By His death, Christ had united all of us who share in His death and keep our faith in Him, and through His glorious resurrection from the dead, when He triumphantly destroyed and defeated death as well as all evils, He also brought all of His faithful ones into His victory and triumph, that we too will share in the joyous and bountiful graces of His promise of eternal life and blessings in heaven.

Therefore, today, on this Solemnity of the Epiphany, let us all reflect on our actions, so that in all the things that we do, we shall understand how much God has loved us that He had given us His own Son, Jesus to be our Saviour. It was because of His great love, that He, Who is King of all kings, King of the Universe and Almighty Creator God, had been willing and indeed willingly came down to us, assuming our humble human form, that as both Man and Divine, He ascended up the cross, and became our salvation.

Let us all therefore strive from now on, if we have not done so yet, to be good disciples and followers of our Lord in all the things we say and do, so that through us more and more people will come to believe in the Lord Jesus our Saviour and be saved through Him. May God be with all of us in this endeavour and strengthen our faith and devotion for Him always. Amen.

Matthew 2 : 1-12

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in Judea, during the days of king Herod, wise men from the East arrived in Jerusalem. They asked, “Where is the newborn King of the Jews? We saw the rising of His star in the East and have come to honour Him.”

When Herod heard this he was greatly disturbed, and with him all Jerusalem. He immediately called a meeting of all high ranking priests and scribes, and asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In the town of Bethlehem in Judea,” they told him, “for this is what the prophet wrote : And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least among the clans of Judah, for from you will come a Leader, the One Who is to shepherd My people Israel.”

Then Herod secretly called the wise men and asked them the precise time the star appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem with the instruction, “Go and get accurate information about the Child. As soon as you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may go and honour Him.”

After the meeting with the king, they set out. The star that they had seen in the East went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the Child was. The wise men were overjoyed on seeing the star again. They went into the house, and when they saw the Child with Mary His mother, they knelt and worshipped Him. They opened their bags and offered Him their gifts of gold, incense and myrrh.

In a dream they were warned not to go back to Herod, so they returned to their home country by another way.

You may have heard of the graces God bestowed on me for your sake. By a revelation He gave me the knowledge of His mysterious design. This mystery was not made known to past generations but only now, through revelations given to holy Apostles and prophets.

Now the non-Jewish people share the inheritance; in Christ Jesus the non-Jews are incorporated and are to enjoy the Promise. This is the Good News.

O God, endow the King with Your justice, the Royal Son with Your righteousness. May He rule your people justly and defend the rights of the lowly.

Justice will flower in His days, and peace abound till the moon be no more. For He reigns from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth.

The kings of Tarshish and the islands render Him tribute, the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts, all kings bow down to Him, and all nations serve Him.

He delivers the needy who call on Him, the afflicted with no one to help them. His mercy is upon the weak and the poor, He saves the life of the poor.

Arise, shine, for your light has come. The Glory of YHVH rises upon you. Night still covers the earth and gloomy clouds veil the peoples, but YHVH now rises and over you His glory appears.

 Nations will come to Your light and kings to the brightness of Your dawn. Lift up your eyes round about and see : they are all gathered and come to You, Your sons from afar, Your daughters tenderly carried.

This sight will make Your face radiant, Your heart throbbing and full; the riches of the sea will be turned to you, the wealth of the nations will come to you. A flood of camels will cover you, caravans from Midian and Ephah. Those from Sheba will come, bringing with them gold and incense, all singing in praise of YHVH.

Sunday, 27 December 2015 : Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph (Homily and Scripture Reflections)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we celebrate on this Sunday after the Solemnity of Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus our Lord, Mary His mother and Joseph, His foster father. On this day we honour that sacred family into whom our Lord and God had been born into this world. This is a model family from which all of our families should model after, and we should indeed heed their examples to be practiced in our own.

As we are still in the midst of the joy of the Christmas season, surely all of us are quite aware of the stories and all the things that are related to Christmas, when our Lord Jesus Christ was born into this world. It all began from the time when the Archangel Gabriel came to Mary and broke the news to her that she would be with a Child, bearing the Saviour in her womb and thus becoming the Vessel and Ark of God’s salvation for men.

And then Joseph, the man to whom Mary had been betrothed to, found out about her pregnancy, and thought that she had been unfaithful to him and committed an adultery, and even so, he tried to salvage her reputation by trying not to publicly denounce her or shame her with the revelation of her seemingly out of order pregnancy. But, when the Angel of God appeared to him in his dreams and revealed to him the truth, he faithfully devoted himself to God’s plans through Mary.

And this continued even so difficulties and challenges faced them together, beginning from the time when Mary was about to give birth to our Lord Jesus. She and Joseph had to travel the treacherous and long distance journey from their house in Nazareth in Galilee to the city of David, Bethlehem in Judea, a distance and journey that certainly no heavily pregnant woman should undertake.

But Joseph followed on very faithfully and helped to get Mary to a place where she could deliver her Child, even in a stable. He protected the newborn Child and His mother, and when the king Herod the Great, who heard of the coming of the Messiah who was prophesied to be the King of the Jews and who was jealous of Him tried to kill Jesus, Joseph guided by the Angel of God in his dream led his family into Egypt until all those who sought the death of Jesus were gone.

And Mary herself loved her Son and her husband equally well, and they together lived on in peace in Nazareth upon returning from Egypt, and as we witnessed in the Gospels, they went together to Jerusalem when Jesus was twelve years old, in order to bring Him to the Temple of God in Jerusalem and join in the festival that was occurring there. We can be sure that they prayed together and worshipped the Lord together.

Indeed, it is likely that it was Mary and Joseph who had taught Jesus how to pray and how to live a life devoted to the Lord and to His commandments. Both Mary and Joseph were devout servants of the Lord, who practiced their faith in all their words, deeds and actions. This is a reminder to all the parents out there that it is their responsibility to teach the faith to their children and to teach them about the Lord.

And we should also note how Jesus, even though He purposefully stayed behind in the Temple of Jerusalem, and arguing with his parents that He had to be in His Father’s house, knowing His true identity as the Son of God and the Divine Word made Man, but He still obeyed His mother and His foster father, followed them and obeyed them as He grew up in the reckoning of man’s years.

This reminds us that children should listen to their parents and learn the right things that they teach them. And this also shows that a family that lives in harmony and love will persevere and prosper. This is very important for us to note, as we now live in a time where the respect and the honour given to the institution of family and the values associated with family life has become lessened and lessened ever more over time.

Yes, we should all be aware how family values and the importance of families became eroded over time, and became increasingly so these days, where people could just mock the institution of families, and family life which was once sacred, had been seen by many people as merely a formality and as even a form of archaism and backwardness.

There are many who sought to destroy the fabric of families, and not least, one of the perpetrators is we ourselves. We have not understood what is the importance of families and how relevant is having a good family to us all. In particular, do we all know that families are the basic units of our faith and the Church? And why is this so, brothers and sisters in Christ?

That is because, as I have just mentioned earlier on, it is usually through the family that someone hears about the faith and the Lord. It is the responsibility of the parents and or godparents, as the vow which all of them had spoken at the time of the baptism of their child, which charged them to bring these little children in good faith and understanding of their Lord’s love and will.

A strong family grounded in good faith will be the foundation of a strong Church, and a strong Church in turn will safeguard its many souls from the attacks of the evil one and from the temptation to turn into sin and wickedness. It is the basic unit of the Church, of our faith, and the family is at the frontline of our regular and constant struggle against the devil and the darkness.

And indeed, the devil knows this, and it is one of the primary objectives of the devil to strike at the heart of the family, for if the family is destroyed, then the souls of the faithful will be in great risk indeed. This is why, on this great feast of the Holy Family, let us all uphold our faith through our family. Let us restore the strength and the harmony within our families, so that together as families blessed by God, each of our family members will be able to resist the devil and his assaults.

May the Lord Jesus, Son of God and Son of Man, Who loved and obeyed His earthly parents and listened to them, and Mary, the Mother of God, whose faith and devotion were exemplary, and St. Joseph, foster father of our Saviour in his commitment and hard works inspire us all to do the same with our own families. God bless us and our families, now and forever. Amen.

Luke 2 : 41-52

Every year the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover, as was customary. And when Jesus was twelve years old, He went up with them, according to the custom of this feast. After the festival was over, they returned, but the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem, and His parents did not know it.

They thought He was in the company, and after walking the whole day they looked for Him among their relatives and friends. As they did not find Him, they went back to Jerusalem searching for Him, and on third day they found Him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. And all the people were amazed at His understanding and His answers.

His parents were very surprised when they saw Him, and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Your father and I were very worried while searching for You.” Then He said to them, “Why were you looking for Me? Did you not know that I must be in My Father’s House?” But they did not understand this answer.

Jesus went down with them, returning to Nazareth, and He continued to be subject to them. As for His mother, she kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and age, and in divine and human favour.

1 John 3 : 1-2, 21-24

See what singular love the Father has for us : we are called children of God, and we really are. This is why the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, we are God’s children and what we shall be has not yet been shown. Yet when He appears in His glory, we know that we shall be like Him, for then we shall see Him as He is.

When our conscience does not condemn us, dear friends, we may have complete confidence in God. Then whatever we ask we shall receive, since we keep His commands and do what pleases Him. His command is that we believe in the Name of His Son Jesus Christ and that we love one another, as He has commanded us.

Whoever keeps His commands remains in God and God in him. It is by the Spirit God has given us that we know He lives in us.

Clothe yourselves, then, as is fitting for God’s chosen people, holy and beloved of Him. Put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience to bear with one another and forgive whenever there is any occasion to do so. As the Lord has forgiven you, forgive one another.

Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as you should do in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not get angry with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, because that pleases the Lord. Parents, do not be too demanding of your children, lest they become discouraged.

How lovely are Your rooms, o Lord of hosts! My soul yearns, pines, for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

Happy are those who live in Your house, continually singing Your praise! Happy the pilgrims whom You strengthen, to make the ascent to You.

O Lord of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, o God of Jacob! Look upon Your shield, o God; look upon the face of Your anointed!
