Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels, remembering all those faithful and committed servants of God, the Guardian Angels whom God had tasked and committed to us, to protect and to guide us all in our respective paths in life. God has always been concerned with us and our well-being and He does not leave us all alone in our struggles and difficulties in life, especially in our daily struggles against sin and against the spiritual warfare ever always raging around us, the forces of Satan, the evil ones arrayed against us. That is why He sent us all those Angels to stand guard by our side, to provide us the spiritual guidance and support during times of difficulties and troubles.

In our first reading today, taken from the Book of Exodus we heard of the Lord Himself speaking to His chosen people, the people of Israel, whom He had led with His mighty hands and power out of the land of Egypt, delivering them from the hands of their enemies and protecting them throughout their way. The Lord reminded His people through Moses, His servant that He would never leave them alone, and His Angels would always stand by them, protecting them in their time of need, against all the forces arrayed against them. Therefore that is also the same assurance which the Lord gave to all of us as well, His beloved people, those whom He had called and chosen from this world to be His own people like those Israelites in the past.

Essentially this reminds us all that we are never alone in the struggle against sin and evil, no matter how mighty are the forces of those arrayed against us. There are indeed many of those who seek our destruction, but none of these can stand and last against those that the Lord had sent to guard us, the Angels of God, the Guardian Angels that He has given to each and every one of us. Yes, brothers and sisters, each one of us have a Guardian Angel standing by our side, guarding us as mentioned against all those forces of evil. Our Guardian Angel is always there when we are facing difficult choices in life, as the one gently nudging us to stay strong in our faith and trust in the Lord despite the many challenges and trials that we may have to face and endure.

Then, from our Gospel passage today, taken from the Gospel according to St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, we heard of the words of the Lord Jesus to His disciples, in which He told the disciples clearly about what it truly means to be His disciples and followers. Just as I have mentioned yesterday in a related Gospel passage about the faith and attitudes of little children who came to the Lord, the disciples of the Lord often quarrelled and debated among themselves about who among them was the greatest among them all and who would be worthy of God’s kingdom and glory. However, as they kept on disagreeing and debating among themselves, they missed the point and the truth about what it truly meant for them to follow the Lord.

They ended up focusing on themselves and their desires, their ambitions and wants, all of which would distract them from truly being able to commit themselves to the Lord. They were so engrossed on their desires for greatness and glory that they forgot the true essence and meaning of following the Lord. For the context, so that we understand better the motivation behind those disciples, we must understand that the general perception and expectation that the people had on the coming of the Messiah, the One Whom God would send to His people in order to save and rescue them from destruction, was that this same Messiah would lead them into glorious triumph against their enemies, and would restore the Kingdom of Israel as how it was during the days of King David and King Solomon.

Hence, many of those disciples might have harboured the ambition of being close to the Lord so that they would receive the bounties and the benefits of being trusted associates and collaborators of the Lord, that when He won those glorious victories and triumphs that they expected, they too would share in this glory and fame, and they would have expected worldly comforts, pleasures and glories, but the reality is that this is not what the Lord intended for those who followed Him. The reality was that those who followed Him would suffer the same challenges, persecutions and trials that He Himself would be suffering from. And that was why He reminded all of them that they should be humble and simple like those little children, whose love and devotion to Him were indeed pure and uncorrupted, untainted by worldly desires.

And that is why all of us should always hold firmly to our faith in the Lord and be more like those little children in our faith and belief in God. We should not allow ourselves to be easily swayed by various worldly temptations and desired that can lead us further and further away from God and His path. Let us thank the Lord for having been with us throughout all the struggles and challenges that we have to face in our respective parts and areas in life. Let us thank Him for having blessed us in our works and endeavours, and for having given us reassurances, guidance, help and strength, especially by giving us our Guardian Angels to guide and protect us in our path and journey towards Him.

Let us all therefore thank our Guardian Angels at all times, for having been there for us, even in our darkest and most difficult moments. Let us all pray to our Holy Guardian Angels with the popular prayer, ‘Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love entrusts me here, ever this day and night be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide.’ Holy Guardian Angels, pray for us always and be with us at all times, in our journey towards God. Amen.

Then Jesus called a little child, set the child in the midst of the disciples, and said, “I assure you, that, unless you change, and become like little children, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble, like this child, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, and whoever receives such a child, in My Name, receives Me.”

“See that you do not despise any of these little ones; for I tell you, their Angels in heaven continually see the face of My heavenly Father.”

You, who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who rest in the shadow of the Almighty, say to YHVH, “My Stronghold, my Refuge, my God in Whom I trust!”

He will rescue you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His pinions and give you refuge under His wings.

You shall not fear the terror of the night nor the arrows that fly by day, nor the pestilence that stalks by night, and the plague that destroys at noonday.

No harm will come upon you; no disaster will draw near your home. For He will command His Angels to guard you in all your ways.

See, I am sending an Angel before you to keep you safe on the way and bring you to the place I have made ready. Be on your guard in his presence and listen to him; do not resist him for he will not pardon your wrongdoing, for My Name is in him.

If you listen to him and do what I say, I will be the enemy to your enemies and the opponent of your opponents. My Angel will go before you and bring you to the land of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites; all these I will destroy.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today as we all listened to the words of the Scriptures we are all reminded of God’s love and providence which He has constantly provided to us throughout our lives, the patience with which He has called us all to follow Him and to embrace His path once again, and to be loved by Him again, despite our many and frequent disobedience and rebellions against Him. He wants us all to be humble and to realise our shortcomings and sins, to atone for them and to be forgiven from all those stumbling blocks that prevented us from truly being able to come towards Him, while reassuring us always of His loving Presence and guidance, which He has always provided for us, at all times.

In our first reading today, we heard from the Book of Exodus in which God reassured His people, the Israelites during the time of their Exodus and journey from the land of Egypt to the Promised Land of Canaan, the land which He has promised to them and their ancestors, as a blessed land rich in milk and honey, full of His bounty and blessings. He provided them all with food and sustenance throughout their whole journey, and as we heard in our passage today, He also reassured them that He sent them His Angels to stand before them and protect them from their many enemies, all those people in the desert which were hostile to the Israelites and attacked them, much as how He had shown His power during their time and liberation from the hands of the Pharaoh and the Egyptians beforehand.

Then, we heard of the passage from our Gospel reading today according to St. Matthew in which we heard how the disciples were asking the Lord who among them presumably would be considered as the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. Many among the disciples of the Lord were likely under the impression that the Lord Jesus as the Messiah or the Saviour had come to liberate the Israelites and to lead them to victory and triumph against their oppressors like the Romans and other rulers, and that He would reestablish the Kingdom of Israel much as how it was during the glorious days of the reigns of King David and King Solomon. As such, not few among them would likely have desired for power and prestige by following the Lord, and thought of gaining those things for themselves.

But the Lord rebuked them gently and told them that this was not how they ought to follow Him or believe in Him, as to be His followers and disciples, they all should focus their attention on the Lord, be humble and committed to His cause, and not to be distracted by the many worldly desires and ambitions being present all around them. That was why He told them all that He would want them to have the faith like the faith of the little children, because all those children truly and joyfully had great faith, trust and love in Him, and not being tainted, corrupted or tempted by the various desires, ambitions and all the other worldly things all around us which may often distract us from our path towards the Lord, towards His salvation and grace.

The Lord essentially reminded us all that we must truly be sincere in our faith in Him, and we should reflect upon our lives if we have truly lived our lives faithfully in His path or whether we have been swayed and tempted by the various temptations, coercions and pressures from the world and from the evil ones, all of those who seek our destruction and downfall as they all desire our defeat. We must not be afraid of all these, and we must not allow ourselves to be easily pulled by the various currents of worldly matters and pursuits. Instead, we should continue to deepen our faith in God and grow in our loving relationship towards Him at all times, helping one another to come ever closer to Him and His salvation.

Today, the Church also celebrates the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels, the day when we remember and commemorate all of our Guardian Angels, the ones whom God had placed around us and in our midst, His own Holy Angels sent to us to guard and protect us. These Guardian Angels protect us against the attacks from the evil spirits, demons and all the forces of those who sought our destruction and damnation with them. As we heard the Scripture passages earlier, the Lord is always by our side, guarding and protecting us all at each and every moments in life, and one of these ways is through the Guardian Angels He has placed around us, always ever ready to protect us and guide us in the right path.

Today, we remember every time our Guardian Angels laboured to protect and guide us in the right path, as they were always ever at the forefront of the ever raging spiritual battlefield that exist all around us, the devil and his forces on one side, and the Lord our God with His Angels on the other, with the price being the state and salvation of our souls. Every time we struggle with sin and the temptations to sin, our Guardian Angels are always there to help us and to guide us, to lead us in our conscience to follow the right path in God and not to be easily swayed by the temptations to disobey and sin against God. Whenever the devil and all the tempters, the evil spirits all around us are always active, striking at us and tempting us to go down the path of sin, our Guardian Angels are always there to guide and protect us.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us all today thank the Lord for His kindness and love, in His patient love for us and for providing us with His Guardian Angels and all the other Angels and spiritual forces and protection to help and protect us against the evil ones, and let us also thank our Guardian Angels for the constant vigil and efforts all around us. Let us all pray the Guardian Angel prayer together, ‘Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.’

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Guardian Angels, who are the Angels that God had sent to be with each and every one of us, to protect and to guide, to show us the way forward in life, and to defend us in the constant spiritual battle in life against the forces of evil. The Guardian Angels are our close confidants, whom the Lord placed before us, because of His great love for us.

God loves us very much, and certainly He does not want us to be snatched away from Him by the devil and all of his allies, the fallen angels, demons and wicked spirits, all of whom are waiting actively for us to fall into sin and therefore, into their hands. They are always going about us, tempting us with the various temptations of the world, which are meant to pull us away from the path towards God.

The Guardian Angels sent to guard and protect us are the ones who are always at the forefront of the spiritual battles that occur daily between the forces of God and the forces of Satan, the voice of our Guardian Angel which reminds us to be faithful to the Lord, to be upright and righteous in all things, versus the voice of the tempters, Satan and his allies, trying to tempt us and seduce us into committing sin before God.

That is why we must truly thank our Guardian Angels, who ceaselessly and tirelessly keep watch by our side, watching for every moves made by the devil and all the evil spirits trying to strike at us. Unfortunately, more often than not, we allow ourselves to be attacked by the devil, to be swayed by his lies and falsehoods, by the temptations he presented to us, which led us to sin and therefore separation from God’s grace.

Nonetheless, the Lord never gives up on us, till the very last moment of our lives. Through our Guardian Angels, and by their intercessions, by the prayers of the Angels and saints, God is continuously at work trying to redeem us and to regain our souls from the clutches of the devil and all trying to drag us into eternal damnation together with them. That said, we need to cooperate by our acceptance of God’s extension of mercy, love and forgiveness in our lives.

Today, all of us as Christians are called to reflect on our own lives, on our actions and what we have done in life thus far. Have we been listening more to the advice of our Guardian Angels in taking actions that are in accordance with God’s will and with the teachings of the Church, or have we rather listened to the words of lies and temptation of the evil spirits and Satan?

Let us all strive to follow the Lord’s path from now on, turning ourselves wholeheartedly towards Him. Let us all sin no more and resist the temptations to sin, by shutting out all the distractions of the devil and all tempters ever present in our midst. Should they continue to assail us, let us ask for the protection by our own Guardian Angels, who will stand by our side defending us against the forces of evil.

Let us now pray together the prayer to our Guardian Angels, asking them for protection and guidance. Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom His love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to fight and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
