Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, a truly important woman and figure in the early Church and who was also highly visible throughout the narrative of the Gospels, the story of the activities of the Lord Jesus during His ministry in this world. This was because St. Mary Magdalene, although not numbered among the Twelve Apostles, was truly an integral part of the Lord’s group, and was one of the women who had always journeyed with the Lord and followed Him throughout His ministry and works. She was also honoured greatly as an equal to the Apostles, and indeed, was considered as one of the Apostles. In fact, she was known as the Apostle to the Apostles, Apostolorum Apostola, for her role in bringing the news of the Lord’s Resurrection to the Apostles.

In our first reading today, we heard of the reading from the Book of Song of Songs in which we heard the words of the author of this book speaking about the love that the author has been seeking, the love of the Lord, the One Who is truly the true love of our lives. That passage from the Book of Song of Songs highlighted the seeking and longing within one’s heart, seeking the great love of God that alone can truly satisfy our longing for love that is indeed true and fulfilling, and the effort that one ought to have and put in, in our journey to seek the love of God, to find this most wonderful and generous love that He has imparted upon us, and which we all experienced in every aspects and parts of our lives.

Then in the other alternative first reading from the Epistle of St. Paul the Apostle to the Church and the faithful people of God in the region of Corinth, we heard of the Apostle speaking also on the love of Christ, the perfect manifestation, proof and example of God’s love being made manifest for all of us. He spoke of how the love of Christ has transformed all the Christian believers, the people of God with the transformational love, the most selfless and wonderful love which He has selflessly and most lovingly provided upon us. That is why all of us as Christians, as those who profess to believe in Christ, must all be filled with the same love which Christ our Lord has shown us most generously and most lovingly from His Cross, for the sake of our salvation.

Lastly, from the Gospel passage today from the Gospel according to St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, we heard the moment when the Lord Jesus rose from the dead and how He revealed Himself first of all to none other than St. Mary Magdalene, the one to whom the Lord entrusted the news of His Resurrection. That was why as mentioned, St. Mary Magdalene was the Apostle to the Apostles, with the word ‘Apostle’ meaning someone who brings forth a testimony and Good News, and it was through her that the Twelve Apostles and the other disciples came to know of the Risen Lord before He appeared to them as well. She was distraught when she went to the Lord’s tomb and saw that the tomb had been opened and the Lord’s Body went missing.

And despite the words of the Angels that were there to tell St. Mary Magdalene and the other women of the Lord’s Resurrection, we heard how at first she was distraught that someone might have stolen His Body. But the Lord appeared to her in all of His Risen glory and reassured her of His Resurrection. She was distraught because she truly cared for the Lord, and having been one of His most ardent and faithful followers, she genuinely felt the loss when she saw and witnessed everything that happened during the Lord’s Passion on the Cross, as He suffered and died, and St. Mary Magdalene herself being specifically mentioned being there at the Lord’s side during His crucifixion when many of the disciples had fled and hid themselves. And when His Body apparently disappeared as well, that must have been terrible to her. But the Lord reassured her and strengthened her in her faith.

While not much was known of the exploits and works of St. Mary Magdalene after this point during the early Church, it was quite certain that she was together with the other disciples when the Holy Spirit came upon them all, and she was likely part of the missions and evangelising works, the spreading of the Good News of God, bringing more and more of God’s people closer to Him, and calling on more to come to know Him. And through her efforts in encouraging the Apostles after the Lord’s Resurrection and the many other roles that she might have played in the early Church, many were touched by the love and devotion that St. Mary Magdalene had for the Lord, in her focus on Him and in her efforts to seek Him, as an exemplary disciple and follower of Christ.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us all therefore be inspired by the good examples, faith and love for God which St. Mary Magdalene, the Apostle to the Apostles, has shown to us. Let us all be inspired by the great love and dedication that she has shown, in following the Lord faithfully throughout His ministry, as she went to wherever the Lord and His disciples went, serving Him and being committed to Him and the mission He has entrusted to her and others. Let us all therefore also answer God’s call with fervent and loving hearts, full of love for Him and ever focused on Him at all times. Let us all be good, worthy and faithful Christians at all times, doing our very best so that through our actions, efforts and works, we may inspire many others to come to the Lord and His salvation as well.

St. Mary Magdalene, Holy Apostle to the Apostles, you who have restored hope to the Apostles and the disciples of the Lord through your faithful bearing of the Good News of the Resurrection, pray for all of us so that we too may be good and faithful witnesses of the Lord and His Resurrection in our world today, within our communities and to everyone whom we encounter and journey with each day, in every moments of our lives. May God be with us always, and may He continue to bless us all most wonderfully in all things, in our every efforts to glorify Him by our lives, now and always. Amen.

Now, on the first day after the Sabbath, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning while it was still dark, and she saw that the stone blocking the tomb had been moved away. She ran to Peter, and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and she said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

Mary stood weeping outside the tomb; and as she wept, she bent down to look inside. She saw two Angels in white, sitting where the Body of Jesus had been, one at the head, and the other at the feet. They said, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She answered, “Because they have taken my Lord and I do not know where they have put Him.” As she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognise Him. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?”

She thought it was the gardener and answered Him, “Lord, if You have taken Him away, tell me where You have put Him, and I will go and remove Him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned, and said to Him, “Rabboni!” – which means Master. Jesus said to her, “Do not touch Me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brothers and say to them : I am ascending to My Father, Who is your Father, to My God, Who is your God.”

So Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord, and this is what He said to me.”

Indeed, the love of Christ holds us, and we realise, that, if He died for all, all have died. And so, from now on, we do not regard anyone from a human point of view; and even if we once knew Christ personally, we should now regard Him in another way.

For that same reason, the one who is in Christ is a new creature. For him, the old things have passed away; a new world has come.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today marks the occasion of the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, the first of the Apostles of the Lord and one of the holy women that accompanied the Lord Jesus during His ministry, also known as Apostolorum Apostola, or the ‘Apostle of the Apostles’ for her role in witnessing the Resurrection of the Lord, as one of the first to encounter the Risen Lord and then proclaiming that Good News to the others, who themselves would become Apostles. The word and title ‘Apostle’ itself came from the Greek word ‘Apostolos’ which came from the verb that means ‘to send off’ and hence, has the meaning of being someone who has been sent off on a particular mission, and in this sense, St. Mary Magdalene received that great honour because she was indeed sent by the Lord to give the Good News to the other Apostles.

St. Mary Magdalene was one of the women frequently mentioned in the Gospels as one of the close confidants of the Lord, following Him on His missions. In terms of her identity, Apostolic and Church traditions were not clear, as she was sometimes associated with the woman who had been a prostitute or adulterer, but in one occasion in the Gospels, it was mentioned that the Lord had cast out seven demons from St. Mary Magdalene. Regardless of her origin and background, whatever she had done in the past and the sins she might have committed, what truly matters is that after her commitment to follow the Lord and her desire to serve the Lord henceforth, St. Mary Magdalene became a great role model and inspiration for all of us in how we ought to live our lives as Christians.

In our first reading today, we heard from the Book of Song of Songs, also known as the Songs of Solomon in which the author wrote about the one who was seeking for the love of her heart, looking around and finding where this person whom she loved. This was a prefigurement of what happened in our Gospel passage today, in which we heard the account of the moment when St. Mary Magdalene was in the garden where the tomb of the Lord was located at, on the Easter Sunday morning when the Lord was risen from the dead. St. Mary Magdalene was distraught because she could not find the Lord’s Body in the tomb that morning, and she genuinely thought that the Lord’s Body had indeed been stolen by someone, and when the Risen Lord appeared before her therefore, she begged Him to show her where her Master’s body was at, not realising that she was speaking to Him.

The relationship between St. Mary Magdalene and the Lord is sometimes misconstrued as one of romantic nature as popularised not long ago by some incorrigible fiction authors, as it had been in the past. But if we understand deeper the context and the relationship between the Lord and St. Mary Magdalene, we can see how in St. Mary Magdalene we saw a great faith and love that she has for the Lord, Who has shown her the path of righteousness and liberated her from the bondage of the evil ones, and she also dedicated herself thoroughly and completely to His cause henceforth, as she was also one of the few who remained close to the Lord at the moment of His Passion, when He was suffering and being persecuted just before He was crucified. St. Mary Magdalene attended to the Lord when many other disciples fled in fear.

St. Mary Magdalene showed us all that there is hope for each and every one of us, that even those who were great sinners, those possessed by evil spirits and having been corrupted by sin have the potential and the chance to be redeemed through their faith and commitment to God. Like many other great sinners and other ordinary people turned saints, St. Mary Magdalene exemplified what a Christian should be like, in overcoming the temptations of the world, all the allures of sin and evil, embracing God’s call in our lives so that we may truly be able to follow Him wholeheartedly in whatever we do, and that we may be good inspirations and role models ourselves to our fellow brothers and sisters all around us.

Today, as we rejoice and honour the glorious examples and memory of St. Mary Magdalene, virtuous servant of God and our role model, let us all also strive to renew our own respective commitments to God. Each and every one of us have been entrusted with the unique gifts and talents, opportunities and chances for us to make good use of our lives to glorify Him. Now the question is whether we want to allow the Lord to help and guide us in our path, or whether we allow the many temptations of evil and wickedness in our lives to sway and mislead us down the wrong paths in life. If we continue to allow all these distractions and temptations to lead us down the wrong path, eventually we will regret our choice in doing so.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us all therefore commit ourselves to refocus our lives and our attention back towards the Lord, distancing ourselves from whatever it is that had distracted and kept us all away from Him. Let us all not be so easily deluded and misguided by the evil one anymore, but commit ourselves with ever greater effort and fervour like what St. Mary Magdalene had done, so that in everything that we do, we will always glorify the Lord, and do what is right and just in the sight of God. Let our lives be good examples and be truly worthy for all of us to be considered and called as the disciples and followers of the Lord. We should always strive and aspire to be ever righteous, just and full of faith and love towards God at all times.

May the Lord, our ever loving and compassionate God continue to bless us all and be with each and every one of us, and may He continue to strengthen each one of us through the examples of His glorious saints, such as St. Mary Magdalene and many others who have given their all and devoted their lives to God. St. Mary Magdalene, holy servant of God, intercede and pray for us all sinners, that God may be moved to forgive us all our sins and that He will continue to love us and to strengthen us in our journey of faith through life, now and always. Amen.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we celebrate the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, one of the faithful and closest disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Saviour. St. Mary Magdalene was one of the women mentioned to have followed the Lord, together with the others named Mary, namely, Mary, the Mother of God herself, and also Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, as well as other holy women who dedicated themselves to help and serve the Lord and His followers. According to various Church traditions, St. Mary Magdalene was associated either with the woman who was caught in the act of adultery, or was a prostitute, or just another ordinary woman, from whom the Lord had driven out seven evil spirits, as recorded in the Gospels.

Regardless of the circumstances and tradition, it is clear that no matter what kind of life that St. Mary Magdalene had carried out in the past, all those things did not change the fact that in the end, this woman became one of the greatest among the Lord’s followers, and by the importance placed on her Feast today, which had been raised to equal that of the other Apostles of the Lord, we can see just how significant St. Mary Magdalene is to all of us as Christians, as the role model and the example for many of us, God’s faithful servants, the people of God. St. Mary Magdalene was truly the Apostle of the Apostles, or Apostolorum Apostola, the one who had brought the message of the Good News and the Lord’s Resurrection to the other Apostles.

That is what we have heard in our Gospel passage today, which highlighted the moment when the Risen Lord Jesus first appeared to His disciples, to St. Mary Magdalene who was among the first to go to the tomb of the Lord on the morning of Easter Sunday, the time when the Lord rose gloriously from the dead. The Lord appeared to the grieving St. Mary Magdalene who thought that the Lord’s Body might have been stolen and hidden by His enemies or persecutors when she saw His tomb was clearly open and empty inside. The Angels of God had told them that the Lord is Risen and that He was no longer in the tomb, as death itself could not contain Him, and He has triumphantly been victorious over sin and death, returning to us as the all-conquering Saviour and Lord. He therefore appeared to the still-shocked St. Mary Magdalene, who saw Him and believed.

It was St. Mary Magdalene who broke the news to the other disciples, and through her accounts and experiences, the Apostles came to know of the Lord’s Resurrection at Easter, with St. Peter and St. John having rushed immediately to the tomb after her return to Jerusalem. Thus, St. Mary Magdalene, who had once been probably living a life of sin and waywardness, became the agent and means through whom God revealed the knowledge and truth about His Resurrection, as the one to whom God first made His appearance after He has risen from the dead. It was also very symbolic, of God coming to be reconciled with us and to seek for the lost and those who suffer from the result of their sins. The Lord Himself has said in one occasion, that He came specifically for those who are lost and those who have none to help them, to heal them and to reconcile them to Himself.

And that is why He came to appear to St. Mary Magdalene, to highlight ever more clearly the love which He has always had for us all, especially for the last, the lost and the least among us. God does not desire any one of us to be lost to Him, and this example shown by St. Mary Magdalene serves as a reminder for each one of us that no one is truly beyond God and His love. God has always reached out to us, caring for us, guiding and helping us in our journey towards Him. St. Mary Magdalene herself also showed us that no sinner is beyond redemption, as has other great sinners turned saints have shown us. As mentioned, regardless of who St. Mary Magdalene was, what truly matters is that this woman has embraced the Lord wholeheartedly and committed herself completely to the Lord, becoming one of His greatest servants.

Now, all of us should be inspired by the great faith and examples, the dedication and the love which St. Mary Magdalene had for the Lord. Each and every one of us as Christians, as the disciples and followers of the Lord can and indeed should follow the same actions and examples that St. Mary Magdalene had done in her life. Each one of us have been called and chosen from this world, and we have received the same truth and Good News of God, and what remains is just therefore for us all to make the conscious choice and decision to commit ourselves to the Lord with all of our might and strength, and becoming great role models and sources of inspiration ourselves, by our own exemplary and faithful works and deeds, at all opportunities and through all the graces that God had provided for us.

Let us all therefore walk in the footsteps of the holy servant of God, St. Mary Magdalene, a most worthy example for all of us, in her commitment and efforts to serve the Lord. She would continue to serve the Lord and offer herself for the greater glory and works of the Lord, and each one of us should strive to follow her example and be always reminded that there is no one who is truly outside and beyond the power of God’s mercy and forgiveness. All of us have been given the opportunities and shown the path by the Lord, and hence, it is up to us whether we want to commit ourselves to the Lord and His path, believe in His truth and Good News, or not. What we all need to remember is that, to all of us God’s beloved people, we have the responsibilities and the calling to be missionary and to be evangelising in our every works and actions, in our every words and endeavours, and interactions with others.

May the Lord continue to help and guide us in our journey of faith through life, and may He inspire all of us to persevere and to be always ever strong in our every deeds and way of life, to be more like His holy servant, St. Mary Magdalene, our great role model and guide, as well as like the innumerable other saints, holy men and women who had given their lives to serve God. May God bless all of us in our every works and efforts, now and always, forevermore. Amen.
