Luke 1 : 39-56

At that time, Mary then set out for a town in the hill country of Judah. She entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leapt in her womb.

Elizabeth was filled with Holy Spirit, and giving a loud cry, said, “You are most blessed among women, and blessed is the Fruit of your womb! How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby within me suddenly leapt for joy. Blessed are you who believed that the Lord’s word would come true!”

And Mary said, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God my Saviour! He has looked upon His servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call me blessed.”

“The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is His Name! From age to age His mercy extends to those who live in His presence. He has acted with power and done wonders, and scattered the proud with their plans. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and lifted up those who are downtrodden.”

“He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty. He held out His hand to Israel, His servant, for He remembered His mercy, even as He promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever.”

Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned home.

Praise to the Lord, break into songs of joy for Him, proclaim His marvellous deeds among the nations and exalt His Name.

Sing to the Lord : wonders He has done. Let these be known all over the earth. Sing for joy, o people of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

Cry out with joy, o daughter of Zion; rejoice, o people of Israel! Sing joyfully with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem! YHVH has lifted your sentence and has driven your enemies away. YHVH, the King of Israel is with you; do not fear any misfortune.

On that day they will say to Jerusalem : Do not be afraid nor let your hands tremble, for YHVH your God is within you, YHVH, saving Warrior. He will jump for joy on seeing you, for He has revived His love. For you He will cry out with joy, as you do in the days of the Feast.

I will drive away the evil I warned you about, and you will no longer be ashamed.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we commemorate the feast of our Lady of Sheshan or Sheshen, a major Marian devotion in China, as well as the feast of Mary herself as the Help of all Christians. This is of a particular importance as on this day, we commit ourselves together as the whole Church, to pray for our brethren, the faithful people of God now suffering persecution, whether legally or subtly, because they are faithful to the Lord and to His teachings.

Before we go on with regards to this matter, we have to first understand about the condition and the background of the situation of the Church and the faithful in China itself. The Church and the faithful in China had endured a long and difficult period of persecution and challenges ever since the Communists won the Chinese Civil War in 1949 and took over the control over mainland China.

At first, the officially atheistic and anti-Christian Communist government and officials openly persecuted the Church of God and the faithful people of God. They were harassed, attacked at every turn and opportunity, and their persecution took a nationalistic and political perspective, as the faithful Christians were deemed to have been influenced by the foreign influences, or even worse, by accusing them as traitors to the nation.

In what is similar to persecution of Christians in the earlier ages, even as the early Church was persecuted by the Roman Empire and by the Jewish authorities, many of the faithful suffered greatly for having kept their faith in God alive. Their properties and possessions were seized, their families and children were threatened, tortured or even brought to judgment and were killed unjustly.

Priests and bishops were sent to concentration and reeducation camp, where many suffered for many years. Some died in prison and for some the fact about their suffering was only known much later on. Such grievous things indeed which the faithful people of God in China had suffered for staying true to the Lord and for keeping the faith in their God alive.

The situation may seem to be much better these days as compared to how it was decades ago. And yet, we should not let ourselves be deceived. Persecution still continues upon the Church and upon our brethren the faithful ones in China. The Communists established the so-called ‘official church’ where all the faithful, the priests, the bishops and all must belong to, or else be persecuted.

But in reality, it is a means through which the people in power were trying to control the Church, and by requiring the faithful to obey the imposed rules and regulations, they were trying to sap the power of the Church and to prevent it from rising up against them. And if we have paid attention to the news, recently we have heard about the forced removal of crosses from many church buildings. It is a clear sign of the opposition which the government still accorded to the Christian faith.

And as we all reflect on these occasions today, let us all be mindful of the other persecutions and the sufferings that the faithful people of God are suffering even today in many parts of the world. Christians are persecuted in the Middle East where they even had to lose their lives just because they believe in the one and only true God. And in other places, the faithful are ridiculed because of their faith, and they are enduring ever greater difficulties in this world where God is gradually and increasingly becomes forgotten in the minds of men.

Therefore, let us all today devote our time to pray to God and ask for His help to be given to these brethren of ours, so that they may be given strength and courage to live their lives even under persecution and difficulty, that they will not give up or abandon their God for the sake of their own safety. May God help them and preserve them, particularly our brethren, the faithful people of God in China. May He bless them and keep them, and may He soon end the suffering that the Church in China faces today. God be with them all. Amen.

“I say to you : even in the midst of persecution, he will receive a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and lands in the present time, and in the world to come eternal life. Do pay attention : many who are now the first will be last, and the last, first.”

1 Peter 1 : 10-16

This was the salvation for which the prophets so eagerly looked when, in days past, they foretold the favour of God with regard to you. But they could only investigate when the Spirit of Christ present within them pointed out the time and the circumstances of this – the sufferings of Christ and the glories which would follow.

It was revealed to them that they were working not for themselves but for you. Thus, in these days, after the Holy Spirit has been sent from heaven, the Gospel’s preachers have taught you these mysteries which even the Angels long to see. So, then, let your spirit be ready. Be alert, with confident trust in the grace you will receive when Jesus Christ appears.

Like obedient children, do not return to your former life given over to ignorance and passions. Imitate the One Who called you. As He is holy, so you, too, be holy in all your conduct, since Scripture says : Be holy for I am holy.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, the message of today’s Scripture readings is very clear. It is calling us to reflect on our actions in this world and think about how we should live in order to become better and more devoted followers of our God. It is a call for us to reject the way of this world, the way of greed and pride, and instead embrace the way of love and humility as espoused by the Lord Jesus and which He taught to His disciples and passed down to us through His Church.

It was mentioned by St. James in his Epistle about the discord and the troubles that appeared among the faithful, because of the clashing interests and ways of different peoples, each of whom acted in ways that is in self-preservation and in the fulfilment of the desires of each person. And because those desires are inherently selfish, it is inevitable that it would cause conflict between them.

And he mentioned that this is not the way that the faithful should behave. They must not succumb to the ways of this world. They must learn how to resist the temptations of the flesh, and cast out those ego, pride, selfishness, and all other forms of negativities that prevented them from being found truly worthy in God. We are encouraged as Christians, by the words of St. James, to live a truly Christian love, to show humility and love in all that we do.

A Christian should not be proud or be boastful of his or her own achievements. This is also the message of the Gospel passage today, where Jesus spoke of power and authority, and rebuked the Apostles and disciples for having disputed with each other about who was to be the greatest among them. Christians should not act in ways that show worldliness and in succumbing to such desires and the wishes one have for fame, glory, power, acknowledgement, wealth or any other things that the world desires.

Christians are called to challenge the way that we mankind have lived for all these while. It is unfortunately in our human nature to be proud, greedy, deceitful, filled with anger and wrath, to be desiring things that sometimes are beyond our means. And if we do not get ourselves out of these things and succumb to their pull, it will be hard for us to get out, and it will certainly gather in ourselves all the wickedness and the vile things that this world is feeding us with.

We have been often too distracted in our lives, too many concerns and wants, and there are many obstacles that prevent us from finding that path we need to walk on towards God. And that is because this world is indeed full of distractions and things that prevent us from being able to recognise the Lord present in out lives. This world is offering us many things that seem to be better as compared to following the Lord, and we grow accustomed to these things.

How is this so? We just have to look at the amount of materialism and consumerism that are around us. There are so many advertisements and encouragements for us to satisfy the desires of our flesh, and these serve as the obstacles that prevent us from living as true Christians. Are we able then, to listen to the advice of Jesus, which He told us to help us on our way to Him?

He brought children up to Him, and He told them, that unless they had the faith like those of small children, they would not find their way to the kingdom of God. Why is this so? If we have noticed small children before, they are innocent, kind, good and are willing to learn anything. They are like blank sheets waiting something to be written on them.

That means, they have no worries or concerns, wishes or desires that are obstacles in our path as we try to reach out to the Lord. They were still pure and good, innocent and blameless, while we ourselves have been tainted by the many things in this world that are pulling us away from God and His ways. Jesus told us all that we need to get rid of these distractions so that we may be able to reorientate ourselves and find our way to the Lord.

And the best way to do this is through prayer, devotion, commitment both to our God and to our fellow brethren around us. This means that we should practice our faith in our lives, showing love to one another, rejecting selfish ways and attitudes, and clear our hearts and minds from vicious and vile desires. We have to be disciplined in our own lives, focusing all of our efforts to do what is good and righteous in the sight of God.

Let us all commit ourselves anew to God, and may all of us, in all of our actions, be able to draw closer to the salvation which God has promised to all those who kept their faith in Him. Let us all do our best in order to be ever more devoted and committed children and follower of our God, having pure and genuine faith Him, and resist the temptations and the lies of the world. May God bless us all in our endeavours, now and forever. Amen.

At that time, after leaving the place where Jesus cast a demon out of a mute and deaf boy, He and His disciples made their way through Galilee; but Jesus did not want people to know where He was because He was teaching His disciples. And He told them, “The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill Him, but three days after He has been killed, He will rise.”

The disciples, however, did not understand these words and they were afraid to ask Him what He meant. They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, Jesus asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” But they did not answer, because they had been arguing about who was the greatest.

Then He sat down, called the Twelve and said to them, “If someone wants to be first, let him be last of all and servant of all.” Then He took a little child, placed him in their midst, and putting His arms around him He said to them, “Whoever welcomes a child such as this in My Name, welcomes Me; and whoever welcomes Me, welcomes not Me but the One Who sent Me.”

I said, “If I had wings like a dove, I would fly away and be at rest.”

I would seek a home in the desert.

I would hurry to find a cave for shelter from the tempest. O Lord, shatter their plans.

In the city I see strife and violence; day and night they prowl about its walls, while inside, evil prevails.

Place your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you, for He never allows the upright to fall.
