Colossians 2 : 12-14

I refer to baptism. On receiving it you were buried with Christ; and you also rose with Him for having believed in the power of God Who raised Him from the dead. You were dead. You were in sin and uncircumcised at the same time. But God gave you life with Christ. He forgave all our sins.

He cancelled the record of our debts, those regulations which accused us. He did away with all that and nailed it to the cross.

Psalm 137 : 1-2a, 2bcd-3, 6-7ab, 7c-8

I thank You, o Lord, with all my heart, for You have heard the word of my lips. I sing Your praise in the presence of the gods. I bow down towards Your holy Temple.

I give thanks to Your Name for Your love and faithfulness, for Your word which exceeds everything. You answered me when I called; You restored my soul and made me strong.

From above, the Lord watches over the lowly; from afar, He marks down the haughty. If I walk in the midst of trouble, You give me life. With an outstretched arm, You save me from the wrath of my foes.

With Your right hand You deliver me. How the Lord cares for me! Your kindness, o Lord, endures forever. Forsake not the work of Your hands.

Genesis 18 : 20-32

Then YHVH said, “How great is the cry for justice against Sodom and Gomorrah! And how grievous is their sin! I am going down to see if they have done all that they are charged with in the outcry that has reached Me. If it is not so, I will know.”

The Men with Him turned away and went towards Sodom, but YHVH remained standing before Abraham. Abraham went forward and said, “Will You really let the just perish with the wicked? Perhaps there are fifty good people in the town. Are You really going to let them perish? Would You not spare the place for the sake of these fifty righteous people?”

“It would not be at all like You to do such a thing and You cannot let the good perish with the wicked, nor treat the good and the wicked alike. Far be it from You! Will not the Judge of all the earth be just?” YHVH said, “If I find fifty good people in Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

Abraham spoke up again, “I know that I am very bold to speak like this to my Lord, I who am only dust and ashes! But perhaps the number of the good is five less than fifty. Will You destroy the town because of five?” YHVH replied, “I will not destroy the town if I find forty-five good people there.”

Again Abraham said to Him, “Perhaps there will be only forty.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” Abraham went on, saying, “May my Lord not be angry, but let me speak. Maybe only thirty good people will be found in the town.” YHVH answered, “I will not destroy it if I find thirty there.”

Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to my Lord, what if only twenty can be found?” He said, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy the place.” But Abraham insisted, “May my Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found?” And YHVH answered, “For the sake of ten good people, I will not destroy Sodom.”

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, on this day we heard about how God revealed to His people through Moses His servant, the Laws and Commandments which would later on be known as the Ten Commandments, the heart of the Law and Covenant which He had established with His people. God had given His laws and words, and sought to plant them on the soil of this world, that is within all of our hearts.

And this is linked closely to what we have heard in the Gospel reading today, where Jesus spoke of the parable of the sower and the seeds, where seeds falling on different places and different soils ended up having different fates and direction. In this we can compare directly, on the notion that the seeds mentioned referred to the same word and Law of God, which God had spread over all of us, and yet in how we live our lives, those seeds given to us by God will develop and grow differently.

In the Gospel, we heard how only the seed that fell on the fertile soil bore rich and plentiful fruits, while those that fell elsewhere met various ends that did not bear anything. This has to be understood first as the seeds refer to the word of God, His ways, His laws and precepts, which He has given to us mankind, to be followed and cultivated in our own lives, so that from what we have received, we may produce bountifully the good fruits of faith.

Those whose seeds fell on the roadside and were picked up by birds of the air were those who have been tempted and failed to persevere against Satan and his lies. As a result, the word of God, His laws and commandments did not remain with them and were lost, amidst all the distractions and things that Satan and his allies had sown in our hearts. We ended up following him instead of following our Lord and God.

Those seeds that fell on rocky ground were not able to grow deep roots and therefore they were unable to grow properly and die because they were unable to take up water and nutrients from the soil. This can be compared with those who have received the Law and the commandments, heard the word and teachings of God and yet they did not allow these to take deep roots in them, in all of their actions and deeds.

As a result, their faith is not firm and shaky, built on uncertain and weak foundations, and when difficulties, problems and temptations came upon them, they are quick to give in and let go of their faith and righteousness for the sake of saving their own faces and to fulfil their own needs. They would not hesitate to abandon the Lord and His ways for worldly things.

Those who were represented by seeds choked by thistles are those who have faith in the Lord, but at the same time, they were unable to resist the temptations and the allures of the world, which brought them to forget about what the Lord had taught. We by our nature are easily tempted by the many offerings of the world, and our flesh is weak. This means that, as our Lord said it, we may have faith in the Lord but our worries and the concerns of our flesh overpowered us.

This is a lesson for all of us, that we all ought to nurture in us a fertile ground for the growing of the Law and the commandments of God. That means, unlike the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law, who observed the Law in its external piety and appearances only, and failed to understand the true nature of why God gave us the Laws in the first place, we must therefore seek to understand the Law, its true meaning and how it can benefit all of us.

The Law of God is love, the love which God had shown us, which we ought to return to Him and which we ought to show to our fellow brethren as well. That is the essence of the Ten Commandments which we have heard today. Love God with all of our hearts’ strength, with all of our might, and then love one another equally in the same way as we have loved ourselves.

If we practice these in our own lives, in our own actions and deeds, then surely what God had given us will by itself produce a rich bounty of the fruits of our love. We may think that what we are doing is not significant and will not have a great effect, but do we all know that whatever we are doing to others will have a ripple effect? Even a small act of love and kindness can spread and influence others to do the same, and as a result, although what we have done may be small, but the overall impact can be huge.

Today let us also be inspired by the saint, whose life we commemorate on this day, namely that of St. Sharbel Makhluf, a holy man hailing from the region now known as Lebanon, one of the Maronite Christians, who devoted himself deeply and completely to the Lord, and whose works and teachings still continue to inspire many people even until today.

St. Sharbel Makhluf was renowned as a very pious monk who led a very solemn and holy life, filled with dedication to the Lord and service to mankind. He performed many healing miracles and other forms of wonders after his death through the piety he had in the Lord. Yet, throughout life he remained humble and devoted, and did not become proud or haughty of his piety, and he lived a life of solitary and yet filled with love for God.

And even after death, he continued to bring God’s love to many, by his healing miracles, through his tomb and incorrupt body, which became a source of goodness and inspiration to many. Indeed, it should be an inspiration to all of us as well, because those who followed the Law of God, and placed it deep in their hearts, and practicing them in real life shall indeed bear many fruits as St. Sharbel Makhluf had done.

May Almighty God bless us and awaken in us the desire to follow Him in all of His laws, precepts, ordinances and rules, that we may always walk straight in His path and not to be distracted and corrupted by the wickedness of Satan and his forces of darkness. May all of us be faithful always and be forever devoted to the Lord our God. God bless us all. Amen.

Matthew 13 : 18-23

At that time, Jesus said to the people, “Now listen to the parable of the sower. When a person hears the message of the kingdom, but does not take it seriously, the devil comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is seed that fell along the footpath.”

“The seed that fell on rocky ground stands for the one who hears the word, and accepts it at once with joy. But such a person has no roots, and endures only for a while. No sooner he is harassed or persecuted because of the word, than he gives up.”

“The seed that fell among the thistles is the one who hears the word, but then the worries of this life and the love of money choke the word, and it does not bear fruit. As for the seed that fell on good soil, it is the one who hears the word and understands it; this seed bears fruit and produces a hundred, or sixty, or thirty times more.”

Psalm 18 : 8, 9, 10, 11

The Law of the Lord is perfect : it gives life to the soul. The word of the Lord is trustworthy : it gives wisdom to the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right : they give joy to the heart. The commandments of the Lord are clear : they enlighten the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is pure, it endures forever; the judgments of the Lord are true, all of them just and right.

They are more precious than gold – pure gold of a jeweller; they are much sweeter than honey which drops from the honeycomb.

Exodus 20 : 1-17

God spoke all these words. He said, “I am YHVH your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.”

“Do not have other gods before Me.”

“Do not make yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything in heaven, or on the earth beneath, or in the waters under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I, YHVH your God, am a jealous God; for the sin of the fathers, when they rebel against Me, I punish the sons, the grandsons and the great-grandsons; but I show steadfast love until the thousandth generation for those who love Me and keep My commandments.”

“Do not take the Name of YHVH your God in vain for YHVH will not leave unpunished anyone who takes His Name in vain.”

“Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. For six days you will labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath for YHVH your God. Do not work that day, neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter nor your servants, men or women, nor your animals, nor the stranger who is staying with you. For in six days YHVH made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested; that is why YHVH has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.”

“Honour your father and your mother that you may have a long life in the land that YHVH has given you.”

“Do not kill.”

“Do not commit adultery.”

“Do not steal.”

“Do not give false witness against your neighbour.”

“Do not covet your neighbour’s house. Do not covet your neighbour’s wife, or his servant, man or woman, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is his.”

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we hear the admonition, almost to the point of lamentation, on why the people of God, whom God had loved so much, did not appreciate that love and refused to budge and listen to the kind words of the Lord, offering hope and comfort. God had done so much for men, as we all may testify and witness in how He cared for His people throughout the Scriptures, and yet they rejected His love.

But the Lord is not someone who would just leave sinners like that once His approach had been spurned. In fact, He tried many times and sent reminders after reminders to tell mankind, both how much He loves us, and also how He gave us chance after chance, which we either ignored or cast aside in our pursuit for the goodness of the world. We have tasted the corruptions of this world, and into sin, where we have fallen into.

Our hearts and minds are corrupted with the darkness of sin, and our beings are filled with darkness that prevents us from seeing the light and living in the light. We are truly the creatures of darkness, unlike the children of the light we all ought to become. And precisely as it had been written in the Scripture reading today, how we trust rather in the leaking faucet and pipes, that is our own flawed strength and feeble foundations, over the strength of the everlasting spring of God’s power.

We are easily tempted, and too easily bribed by Satan who offered the sweetest of his treacherous lies and temptations. He has all of his forces arrayed against us, tempting us daily that we may eventually falter along our path towards salvation, and be dragged together with him into the hellfire. That is why, brothers and sisters in Christ, we must be vigilant and be solid in our faith, that we have a strong defense against whatever it is that the devil is using against us.

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Sharbel Makhluf or St. Charbel Makhluf, a renowned Maronite saint, who lived just over a hundred years ago in today’s Lebanon. St. Sharbel Makhluf is a holy man and a deeply devoted person to God, who was born to a devout Christian Maronite family, a group of Christians that has dwelled for a very long time in Lebanon area since the days of the early Church, and which remained loyal to the authority of the Apostles even though many others had apostasized.

St. Sharbel Makhluf joined the religious life and devoted his life entirely to God. He was truly a role model for the faithful, and his life was an example for all to see. His life might have been relatively uneventful, and he dedicated all of his time to God. However, upon his passing from this world to the heavens to be with God, miracles came abound from his body and his grave. This is a mark of favour by God, showing how much He blessed those who are with Him and who devoted themselves to Him.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, should we not follow the examples of this great and yet humble saint of God? In his life, St. Sharbel Makhluf had shown us that it is perfectly possible for us all to be faithful servants of our God, provided that we set our sights, our attention and our hearts on Him alone. If we do these things, certainly God will bless us just as He had once blessed St. Sharbel Makhluf.

Let us all therefore seek God in this life, and devote ourselves ever more to our loving God. God wants nothing other than our love and devotion, just as He Himself had first been devoted to us. Let us no longer spurn His love, but with great humility, ask Him for His grace and forgiveness, that we may once again enjoy the fullness of His love. God be with us all. Amen.

Matthew 13 : 10-17

Then Jesus’ disciples came to Him and said, “Why do You speak to them in parables?”

Jesus answered, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but not to these people. For the one who has, will be given more and he will have in abundance. But the one who does not have will be deprived of even what he has.”

“That is why I speak to them in parables, because they look and do not see; they hear, but they do not listen or understand. In them the words of the prophet Isaiah are fulfilled : However much you hear, you do not understand; however much you see, you do not perceive.”

“For the heart of this people has grown dull. Their ears hardly hear and their eyes dare not see. If they were to see with their eyes, hear with their ears and understand with their heart, they would turn back, and I would heal them. But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears, because they hear.”

“For I tell you that many prophets and upright people have longed to see the things you see, but they did not see them, and to hear the things you hear, but they did not hear them.”

Psalm 35 : 6-7ab, 8-9, 10-11

Your love, o God, reaches the heavens; Your faithfulness, to the clouds. Your justice is like the mighty mountains; Your judgment like the unfathomable deep.

How precious, o God, is Your constant love! Mortals take refuge in the shadow of Your wings. In Your house they find rich food and they drink from Your spring of delight.

For with You is the fountain of life, in Your light we see light. Bestow on Your faithful Your love and give salvation to the upright of heart.
