If only My people would listen, if only Israel would walk in My ways, I would quickly subdue their adversaries and turn My hand against their enemies.

Those who hate YHVH would cringe before Him, and their panic would last forever. I would feed you with the finest wheat and satisfy you with honey from the rock.

Numbers 11 : 4b-15

The Israelites wept and said, "Who will give us meat to eat? We remember the fish we ate without cost in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions and garlic. Now our appetite is gone; there is nothing to look at, nothing but manna."

Now the manna was like coriander seed and had the appearance of bedellium. The people went about gathering it up and then ground it between millstones or pounded it in a mortar. They boiled it in a pot and made cakes with it which tasted like cakes made with oil. As soon as dew fell at night in the camp, the manna came with it.

Moses heard the people crying, family by family at the entrance to their tent and YHVH became very angry. This displeased Moses. Then Moses said to YHVH, "Why have You treated Your servant so badly? Is it because You do not love me that You burdened me with this people? Did I conceive all these people and did I give them birth?"

"And now You want me to carry them in my bosom as a nurse carries an infant, to the land You promised on oath to their fathers? Where would I get meat for all these people, when they cry to me saying :'Give us meat that we may eat?'"

"I cannot, myself alone, carry all these people; the burden is too heavy for me. Kill me rather than treat me like this, I beg of You, if You look kindly on me, and let me not see Your anger."

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, on this day we heard clearly in the first reading which was taken from the Book of Deuteronomy, on how God loves all of us mankind greatly, and how He has blessed the people of Israel again and again, bringing them out of Egypt and out of their painful slavery, and bringing them across the Red Sea and providing them with what they need for many, many years, so that even as they went through a great desert, they did not go hungry and thirsty.

And we have to understand the context and situation of the time in order to really understand what had happened at the time. The people of Israel, despite such a great treatment and blessing by the Lord, who gave them all that they needed, they continued to bicker and to complain against the Lord, and demanded all the more, even though they have been blessed beyond many others.

Thus, on this occasion, we witnessed how Moses, after journeying for many years in the desert with the people of Israel, he reminded all the people of the love and care which God had shown them, which no other peoples had experienced and which no other deities or false idols had done for anyone besides what God had done for His beloved ones, even considering their rebelliousness and refusal to believe.

He chastised them for their stubborn hearts and minds, which had refused all the love which God had poured unto them with great care and tenderness. He taught them that they ought to be thankful and be grateful to the Lord for all that He had given to them. And they ought to live according to the Law which God had given to all of them, a set of rules and regulations to be followed, that they all may remain forever in the grace of God.

This is very linked and related to what we heard in the Gospel reading today, where Jesus spoke of how we have to die to ourselves and to take up our crosses and follow Him, if we are to live righteously and justly in the grace of God. He spoke of this, because for many of us, just as it was for the people of Israel, it was very difficult for us to let go of many worldly things, which entanglements often prevented us from finding our way to God.

How many of us often find it difficult to resist the temptations of the flesh? How many of us have been greedy for the many goods of the world, for the allure of money and possessions, for the pull of sexual gratification and the desires of our heart? Indeed it is not easy for us to resist all of them, but if we give in to them, and do nothing about it, then we truly ought to fear for the sake of our souls.

We are reminded yet again on this day, that we should go forth and seek the treasure that lasts forever, that is the true treasures of heavenly grace, found only and given only by our Lord for those who are faithful to Him. This surpasses all other things of this world, the false and impermanent treasures that is plenty in this world, but which can be destroyed by fire, by rot, by the interventions of men, and are not eternal.

Thus, we ought to resist all the temptations and challenges that come our way, and live faithfully to the ways which God had taught us, and which we have learnt through the Church, where we are together as one people, facing all the oppositions and challenges from all those who rejected Him and followed Satan instead, and this is our cross to bear, that is the cross of our own temptations and sins.

Let the examples of the saints whose feast we celebrate on this day be an inspiration to all of us. Pope St. Sixtus II was the Bishop of Rome and Leader of the entire Universal Church in the early Church, and he was a very devoted servant of God who cared for all those entrusted under his care, as the shepherd appointed by God to be the one to lead all of his people to Himself.

He worked hard together with many other holy men of his time, many of whom were arrested together with him during the great persecution against the Church and the faithful by the Roman Emperor Valerian. They refused to recant their faith in God and continued to stand firm in their faith in God, and their examples inspired many others to stand by their faith, despite all the temptations and offers by the authorities that if they recanted their faith, they would be rewarded handsomely and enjoyed many good things.

This is exactly what Jesus meant by gaining the world and losing your soul, for if they had accepted the offers, then indeed they would not suffer grievous death that the holy martyrs had suffered, but then, they too would lose forever the grace and salvation which had been promised to them, and for a temporary respite and moment of goodness in this world, they have lost forever the promise and surety of eternal life.

St. Cajetan, the other saint whose feast we celebrate today, was a priest known for his great piety and holiness, and with his works to bring back many of the people who have gone astray from the Church to return to the Holy Mother Church, and to repent from their sins. He established together with another Saint, St. Jerome Emiliani, a religious congregation devoted to the care of the people of God.

Therefore today, inspired by the examples of these holy saints, let us all ourselves walk in the path of the Lord, removing from ourselves the taint of sin and corruption of the world, and instead focus on the Lord and in His ways, carrying our cross together with Him, giving Him thanks for all He had done for us, and together reach out to the everlasting life and inheritance He had promised all of His faithful. God bless us all. Amen.

Moses said, “Ask of the times past. Inquire from the day when God created man on earth. Ask from one end of this world to the other : Has there ever been anything as extraordinary as this? Has anything like this been heard of before? Has there ever been a people who remained alive after hearing as you did the voice of the living God from the midst of the fire?”

“Never has there been a God who went out to look for a people and take them out from among the other nations by the strength of trials and signs, by wonders and by war, with a firm hand and an outstretched arm. Never has there been any deed as tremendous as those done for you by YHVH in Egypt, which you saw with your own eyes.”

“You saw this that you might know that YHVH is God and that there is no other besides Him. He let you hear His voice from heaven that you might fear Him; on earth He let you see His blazing fire and from the midst of the fire you heard His word.”

“Because of the love He had for your fathers, He chose their descendants after them, and He Himself made you leave Egypt with His great power. He expelled before you peoples more numerous and stronger than you, and He has made you occupy their land : today He has given this to you as an inheritance.”

“Therefore, try to be convinced that YHVH is the only God of heaven and earth, and that there is no other. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we hear how the Lord renewed His covenant with His people, a covenant that was once broken through the disobedience of the people of God, now made anew and renewed through the offering and sacrifice of none other than the very Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom the Lord had sent into the world, so that the world may have hope again.

Yes, a hope that was once dashed, first when men first fell into sin, through the disobedience of our great ancestors, Adam and Eve, the first among mankind. Their disobedience brought men into sin, and as a result, they were cast out from the glory and joys of heaven into a world of suffering, trials and tribulations. And then, while God extended His hands to welcome them back, they refused many, many times, and in their wickedness, they suffered further.

And when He chose for Himself a people from His faithful servant Abraham, the people He had chosen and then delivered from the hands of their enemies broke their promises and devotions, even as early as when the Lord had just given them the set of Laws to be followed and to be obeyed. The people showed wickedness and acted as they liked, following their own desires rather than the way the Lord wanted them to follow.

They worshipped pagan gods, rejected God’s love, trampled on His laws, complained against His kindness, and acted all sorts of wickedness that were abhorred by God. They killed, murdered, blasphemed, fornicated themselves and sold themselves and their souls to the devil. And hence, they were scattered and crushed under the weight of their sins, suffering the consequences of their rebelliousness.

But our Lord is not such a heartless God, and in fact, so great was His mercy and love that He was willing to give mankind yet another hope and another chance. And Jesus is the One through whom God made this mercy and love evident for all to see, and in fact not just to be seen, but also to be followed. In the first reading today from the Book of the prophet Jeremiah, God mentioned that He was going to make a new covenant with His people, and He did indeed.

And this covenant, unlike the previous covenants, is everlasting and will not end. Yes, it is a new and eternal covenant, which God had sealed with nothing else and nothing more precious than the offering of His own Body, and by the shedding and outpouring of His own Blood. Yes, this is the ultimate sacrifice which our Lord Jesus Christ went through during His Passion, and as He died on the cross at Calvary.

Satan definitely did not remain silent or inactive throughout all of these, as he did his best to undermine the Lord’s efforts to bring salvation to mankind by various means and yet without success. Satan tried to play and build up on men’s fears and uncertainties to carry out his devious plots and plans, and that was how he used Peter’s doubts and fears to strike at the Lord Jesus and attempted to stop His work of salvation.

But Jesus was not deterred by Satan’s works, and He rebuked this devil and cast him out of His presence. And this gave us all an example to follow, that in our lives we ought to be courageous and steadfast as well in our faith, that we would not be easily persuaded by the temptations of the evil one, and that we may faithfully walk in the way of the Lord, following the new covenant He had established with us.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, today we celebrate the feast of two saints of the Church, the first of which is the Pope of the early Church, Pope St. Xystus II or Pope St. Sixtus II and St. Cajetan, a priest of the late Renaissance age Italy. Both of them were truly great and faithful servants of the Lord, who worked hard to advance the cause of the Lord in this world.

Pope St. Sixtus II lived during the reign of the Roman Emperor Valerian, who launched a particularly vicious opposition and persecution campaign against Christians in the Empire, and as part of that persecution, countless thousands of the faithful ones were captured and tortured, before they were martyred in the defense of their faith.

Pope St. Sixtus and other priests, deacons and many servants of the Lord were also captured and tortured for their faith, but they did not fret or be fearful. Instead, they faced suffering and death with gladness and joy, knowing that the Lord is waiting for them at the end of their suffering in order to give them the crown of everlasting glory and the reward of eternal life and salvation.

Meanwhile, St. Cajetan was an Italian priest who had a more normal life of sorts, but he had also experienced difficulties and challenges when he lost his father at a very young age of two. Nevertheless, he studied hard and eventually became a respectable priest and servant of God, well endowed with great intellect and hardworking attitude, which served him truly well during his service to the Church and God’s people.

St. Cajetan did numerous good works for the people of God, especially for those who were poor, sick and weak. He worked hard for them, and he also helped found several religious communities to bring the work of God even closer to mankind. In this, St. Cajetan showed us that, we should not fear or be worried to become a servant of the Lord, but rather we have to be courageous and defend our faith with our entire might.

Therefore, brothers and sisters in Christ, let us all renew our commitment to the Lord, and ask the Lord to continue to guide us and bless us in this life. May Almighty God keep us forever in His love. Amen.

After that, Jesus came to Caesarea Philippi. He asked His disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They said, “For some of them You are John the Baptist, for others Elijah, or Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”

Jesus asked them, “But you, who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus replied, “It is well for you, Simon Bar-jona, for it is not flesh or blood that has revealed this to you, but My Father in heaven. And now I say to you : You are Peter, and on this rock I will build My Church; and never will the powers of death overcome it.”

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven : whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you unbind on earth shall be unbound in heaven.”

Then He ordered His disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ. From that day Jesus began to make it clear to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem; that He would suffer many things from the Jewish authorities, the chief priests and the teachers of the Law; and that He would be killed and be raised on the third day.

Then Peter took Him aside and began to reproach Him, “Never, Lord! No, this must never happen to You!” But Jesus turned to him and said, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an obstacle in My path. You are thinking not as God does, but as people do.”

You take no pleasure in sacrifice; were I to give a burnt offering, You would not delight in it. O God, my sacrifice is a broken spirit; a contrite heart You will not despise.

Jeremiah 31 : 31-34

The time is coming – it is YHVH who speaks – when I will forge a new covenant with the people of Israel and the people of Judah. It will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and led them out of Egypt. For they broke My covenant although I was their Lord.

This is the covenant I shall make with Israel after that time : I will put My Law within them and write it on their hearts; I will be their God and they will be My people. And they will not have to teach each other, neighbour or brother, saying : ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know Me, from the greatest to the lowliest, for I will forgive their wrongdoing and no longer remember their sin.
