Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today as all of us continue to progress through this most joyful season of Easter, we are reminded yet again of the calling which all of us have received from the Lord, to be witnesses of His Resurrection, the bearers of His Good News and Light to all the nations, and as the ones to share and show His love manifested through us and our actions, in each and every moments of our lives. All of us have been called to bear witness to our Christian faith through our faithful actions in life, by our obedience to the Law of God and the commandments that He has taught to us through His Church. We should always be exemplary in how we live our lives so that as good and faithful Christians, we may inspire many more people in their lives and that they may also strive to come closer to God.

In our first reading today, taken from the Book of the Acts of the Apostles we heard the conclusion of the account of what happened on the day of the Pentecost, fifty days after the Day of the Lord’s Resurrection when the Holy Spirit empowered St. Peter the Apostle and the other Apostles and disciples of the Lord with the courage and the wisdom to speak the truth about the Lord and His Resurrection to the many people assembled in Jerusalem. St. Peter spoke courageously defending their faith before everyone, stating how everything had happened to the Lord Jesus, Who was crucified in Jerusalem after being condemned by the Temple authorities and then, rose from the dead after He had died on the Cross, all of these happened because of the Lord’s desire to bring forth His salvation to all the people of all the nations by the sacrifice of His Son on the Cross.

Therefore, St. Peter spoke at length with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and testifying for what he and the other Apostles had witnessed during their time with the Lord, revealing how God had given all of us mankind a remedy for all of our sins and all of our predicaments, providing for us the path out of the darkness. He has given us the gift and assurance of His salvation which He made evident through the baptism that He has made available to everyone through His Church and disciples. It was at that moment when the Church began manifesting itself to the world, on the day of the Pentecost, with three thousand people having embraced the faith and made themselves to be baptised by the Apostles, marking the moment when the Church became tangible to the world.

Then, from our Gospel passage today, taken from the Gospel according to St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, we heard of the occasion when the Lord Jesus, just Resurrected from the dead, made His appearance to St. Mary Magdalene, the first to whom the Lord made Himself known and seen by His disciples right after He had risen from the dead. She and other women following the Lord had been rushing to the tomb of the Lord on the morning of the Sunday after the Sabbath to put the spices and ointments on the Body of the Lord because they were unable to do so at the moments after His crucifixion as it happened right before the Sabbath. But they were all greeted by the surprising sight of the Tomb being opened and the Body having disappeared from it.

It was when St. Mary Magdalene was distraught in that garden near the Tomb that the Risen Lord appeared to her and made Himself known to her, consoling her and revealing the truth about His death and how He has triumphed over ever death itself, just as He has predicted and told her and the other disciples. The disciples of the Lord came to know of this Good News because St. Mary Magdalene herself and the other women went rushing to them to tell them of the Lord’s Resurrection, and they all then saw the Risen Lord Himself in the flesh, in His glorified and Resurrected Body, proving and showing to them all that He was not merely a Spirit or a ghost. He took food and ate it before them, showing that He was truly alive, in Body and Spirit, and revealing to us what we will ourselves experience at well through our own resurrection.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, as we have discussed and heard earlier from the Scriptures, as well as from what we believe in our Christian faith, all of us believe that one day, all of us shall also share in the glorious resurrection of our Lord, risen in our body and spirit at the time of the Final Judgment, so that we may fully and completely enjoy the fullness of God’s grace and blessings, to enjoy forever the eternity in bliss and true happiness with our Lord Who loves us all, just as He has always intended for us. Sin has put a temporary stop to this and prevented us from achieving this state, while it made us corrupted and defiled because of our disobedience against God, and our inability to resist the many temptations present around us. But God Himself has shown us the path out of this darkness and predicament, opening the path for us to eternal life.

As we continue to pass through this time and season of Easter, all of us are reminded that each and every one of us should always be active in living our lives as good and courageous Christians, in standing up to our faith and beliefs in the Resurrected Christ, in the Son of God made Man, Who has suffered most grieviously for us, and which He had done willingly out of love for us. It is through this Resurrection that we have new hope in the Lord, and how we can keep on going in this world and life amidst all the challenges, difficulties and hardships we may have to endure and encounter in our respective paths. There are a lot of temptations trying to keep us away from God and His salvation, and many among us may be seriously tempted to leave behind the path of the Lord, to choose instead the path of worldliness and evils.

But we must not lose faith in the Lord, and instead we should deepen our faith and trust in Him even more, by developing a truly genuine and healthy relationship between us and God. And how do we do this, brothers and sisters? It is by spending good time in communication with God, through prayer, charity and other works that we do in His Name. Each and every one of us are God’s beloved and holy children, we have been given the assurance from God that we will be with Him and share with Him the joy of the Resurrection when the time comes for us to experience it, if we remain truly faithful in Him, and are righteous and worthy in our deeds and lives. Let us all therefore strive to do our part in being worthy bearers of the truth of God’s Resurrection, His Good News and salvation to the nations. Let us all continue to bear witness to the Lord in wherever we are in our communities, and do our best to serve the Lord at all times.

May our Risen Lord continue to strengthen us in faith and guide us all towards Him, and may He bless us all in everything we do, in our every good efforts and works, for His greater glory, now and always. Amen.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today as we all continue to rejoice greatly during this Easter Octave and season, we are all reminded that as Christians it is our responsibility and calling for us to proclaim the Lord’s truth and Resurrection, His Good News and everything that He has revealed to us and taught to us through His Church. As Christians, it is imperative that we should always be exemplary and worthy in all and everything that we do in each and every moments of our lives, being inspiration and role models for all those around us, our brethren in faith. It is through our commitment to the Lord by our worthy lives and also our faithful testimony of the Risen Lord that we can truly be called as good and faithful Christians, as we all should be.

In our first reading today from the Acts of the Apostles, we heard from the words of the Apostle St. Peter who continued to proclaim about the Risen Lord together with the other Apostles right after the Holy Spirit descended and came down upon them during the time of the Pentecost, the fiftieth day after the Passover and the Lord’s glorious Resurrection from the dead. The Holy Spirit that came down upon the Apostles gave them the courage and strength to speak up the truth and overcome their fears and uncertainties, as they embarked on the mission which the Lord Himself has entrusted to them, that is to proclaim His salvation and Good News to all the people of all the nations. Despite all the threats and oppositions faced by St. Peter and the other Apostles from the chief priests and the other enemies of the Lord, they all proclaimed courageously what the Lord had done for His people.

And this included all the good things that God had done in fulfilling the words of the prophets, in completing the long planned and awaited God’s plans to rescue all of us mankind. St. Peter spoke of how the same Christ, Jesus the Son of God, Who had been sent to the world to save everyone, and had been rejected and persecuted by the Jewish authorities who refused to listen to Him and His truth. And yet, as the Apostles had testified, that the Lord Jesus did not remain in the state of death, but having triumphed over sin and death, conquering those and showing everyone that truly there is hope and life after and beyond death, the Risen Lord has proven the truth and veracity of all of God’s promises, how He would liberate us all from the tyranny of sin and all the forces of evil that have kept us bound and dominated all these while.

This is a reminder to the people of God of just how once He had shown His love to them by leading them all out from their enslavement in the land of Egypt, showing them His might and power as He rained down destruction on the Egyptians and their Pharaoh while keeping His people safe, and finally leading them all out from their slavery through the sea, to the land of freedom and plenty which He has promised to their ancestors and to all of them, the descendants of those faithful people whom God had called and chosen to be His own. Now, through Christ, the Apostles revealed that the Lord has extended this freedom and liberation, not only from the physical slavery as once experienced by the Israelites in Egypt, but even more importantly, liberation from the bondage, shackles and slavery to our sins and evils, to the darkness surrounding and keeping us bound under its tyranny.

Then, in our Gospel passage today, we heard from the Gospel according to St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist in which we were told of what happened immediately after the Lord Jesus rose from the dead, when the Lord appeared before the women who went to the tomb early on Sunday morning, on that day when the Lord gloriously rose from the dead, appearing before all the disciples afterwards and fulfilling everything that He had promised to them about His suffering, death and ultimately how He would rise in glory on the third day after just as everything He said it would be. But the chief priests and the Temple authorities wished to keep this news on the Resurrection which began to rapidly spread at that time, from spreading even more, and as we heard in the Gospel passage, they tried to spread lies and falsehoods to counter the truth about the Resurrection of the Lord.

And why did those Temple authorities and chief priests did so, brothers and sisters in Christ? That is likely because they feared the ever growing influence of the Lord that had made them to be jealous and unhappy at the rapid spread of the Lord’s teachings and ways, many of which they disagreed with, as many among them proudly kept on to their way of observing the Law and commandments of God, refusing to listen to the Lord and to believe in His teachings and truth. And that led to them putting false accusations on Him and condemning Him to death, but yet all those did not manage to stop the Lord and His truth. In fact, the Resurrection of the Lord proved all the truth behind everything that He had revealed, leading to those who still refused to believe in Him to scramble and panic in trying to contain the news.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, through what we have heard in today’s Gospel and other Scripture passages, we are therefore reminded of the need for all of us to be courageous in standing up for our faith in God and in His truth. If the Apostles at that time had not allowed the Lord to lead and guide them in their paths, and giving them the courage to defend the Lord’s Resurrection, then the truth would have been hidden and buried forever, and few if any would have benefitted from the loving sacrifice of Our Lord, Who has revealed God’s long planned salvation for all of us mankind. We should do our best in our daily living so that by our courageous faith and our desire to proclaim the Lord in all of our daily activities, we may be His faithful and devoted missionaries, not just through words but also genuine actions.

May our Risen Lord therefore continue to help us in our journey of faith and life, in our daily commitment to walk faithfully in this path of a missionary disciple, in doing what the Lord had told us to do, proclaiming His Resurrection and the Good News of His salvation in our daily living, in being good and faithful disciples of our Risen Lord at all times. We should be good role models and inspirations for our fellow brothers and sisters, and in inspiring many others to live lives that are truly worthy of God in all circumstances. May God be with us all, and may He bless our every good efforts and endeavours, now and always. Amen.

Sunday, 20 April 2025 : Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord (Homily and Scripture Reflections)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Alleluia! The Lord is Risen! He has triumphed and conquered sin and death, and has brought us all into a new Hope and Light of His salvation, let us all rejoice and be glad! All of us have come to this most joyful and happy occasion of Easter, and on this Sunday, the day of Easter Sunday, we remember all of the preparations that we have done in getting ourselves ready to celebrate this most momentous and important occasion. It is at the core of our Christian beliefs and faith that we believe in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Saviour and Son of God Who has been crucified for the sake of all mankind. And this belief in the Resurrection of Jesus is truly important because without the Resurrection then our faith is nothing more than an empty faith and belief.

Without the Resurrection of the Lord, then Jesus Christ is no more than just a mere Man or a Prophet like others, and worse still, it might have affirmed what the Jewish elders and chief priests had accused the Lord of doing, that is being a False Messiah and as someone who has blasphemed against God. But the reality is that the Lord Jesus had risen from the dead and this faith has been passed down to us for generations after generations to our present day through the Church of God. The Resurrection is something that we ourselves have not seen, experienced and witnessed and yet we chose to believe in this truth, just as many of our predecessors had done before us. All of us truly believe in Jesus Christ, in Him being the Son of God Incarnate, in everything that He had taught and revealed to us, and in His suffering, death and resurrection.

People always debate on whether Christmas or Easter is the greater and more important celebration. The truth is that it is more complicated than it seems to be, and it is truly imprudent and inappropriate to compare the two of them. The reality is that both of them are very important events in the history of our salvation and neither is complete without the other one. But ultimately, Easter is more important and crucial to our salvation because without what happened at Easter, then the Child born into this world at Christmas would just be another one of the countless mankind that had been born into this world, just like any one of us. If Christ never rose from the dead, then everything that He had taught, all the prophecies that He had fulfilled all ultimately would have come to nothing, and His followers would have eventually scattered and ceased to exist just as what had happened to so many other False Messiahs.

But at the same time, Christmas is important because it provided the foundation for what happened during the whole Holy Week and Easter. In Christmas, we have seen the manifestation of God’s love made Man, the Divine Being Himself being incarnate in the flesh and appearing before us. After spending nine months in His mother Mary’s hallowed womb, the Lord Himself was born into this world and showed Himself to us, from the once intangible and unapproachable, transcendent beyond imagination into the realm of reality, approachable, touchable and tangible to us. Through Christmas, we know that God has made His salvation clear and tangible to us, and not merely just a mighty deed done from afar, but a real action from a loving God Who has assumed our Humanity, and becoming Man as we are, He has united us all to Himself and made His salvation available to us.

That is because by His perfect obedience to the Father’s will, Christ as the New Adam and the New Man showed us all what all of us mankind are supposed to be, pure, blameless, full of faith and obedience to God. God has created us all in His image and likeness, but we have all been corrupted due to our fall into sin, failing to resist the many temptations that prevented us from truly achieving our full potential in what we have been meant to be. God created us all good and perfect, all full of grace and holiness, just as the Lord Himself has shown us in His perfect humanity, untainted by sin. But we have been led astray by sin and because of this we have been forced to wander off in this world and suffer the consequences of our disobedience and lack of faith and trust in God.

Our Scripture readings this Easter Sunday then highlight to us all the things which the Lord had done to overcome sin and death, and reunite us all with our most loving God and Father, our Creator and Master. Christ our Risen Lord has endured the worst of sufferings and challenges, trials and pains, by Him embracing willingly our many sins and their punishments upon Himself, by making Himself the Paschal Lamb, the Lamb of God to be slain for the New and Eternal Passover and Covenant that God wanted to establish with us all. The sacrifice and offering of our Risen Lord has been accepted in His perfect obedience, as the one and only worthy offering that is good enough to redeem and heal us all from our afflictions and corruptions by sin, as our Eternal High Priest, offering His own Most Precious Body and Blood for our salvation.

In our first reading taken from the Acts of the Apostles, we heard of the great testimony of faith from St. Peter the Apostle, the Lord’s chief disciple who spoke courageously and full of the Holy Spirit after he and the other disciples had received the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, fifty days after the Lord Jesus had risen from the dead. He spoke bravely and courageously on behalf of the Lord because he himself had seen and witnessed everything that happened, and as recorded in the Scriptures, he and many others had seen the Risen Lord Himself in the flesh, in the glory of His Resurrected Body, which has transcended death. Initially, he and the other disciples were afraid because of the intense pressures, intimidations and efforts by the Jewish elders and chief priests who sought to keep the news about the Resurrection from spreading, even to the point of spreading false stories about how the disciples had stolen the Lord’s Body from His tomb.

But there St. Peter stood courageously before the many people assembled in Jerusalem for the Festival of the Pentecost, proclaiming all the good things that the Lord had done and accomplished through the same One Whom the people had persecuted and crucified just weeks earlier, and Who had died and yet rose again gloriously from the dead despite the lies and the falsehoods that the Temple authorities and the members of the Sanhedrin attempted against the Lord. He proclaimed the salvation which the Lord had won for all of us, the people beloved by God because of His triumphant Resurrection from the dead. And because they themselves have all experienced it, St. Peter and the other Apostles and disciples, all the witnesses of the Resurrection that our Gospel passage today had presented to us and all the great deeds that the Lord had done would not remain silent, and they proclaimed them all in great joy.

In our second reading this Easter Sunday, we heard from the Epistle of St. Paul the Apostle to the Colossians, in which he exhorted all of them to seek what is holy and worthy, and not in earthly and worldly things. He challenged the faithful people of God to live in the manner that they have been called and expected to do as Christians, as those whom God had called and chosen to be His own beloved and holy people. Therefore, this is the same reminder to all of us that we should always be truly be active and committed in each and every moments of our lives, in carrying out our every actions, words and deeds in the manner that the Lord had taught us all through His Church. We should not merely be faithful in the manner of formality only, but we must be like the Apostles, who courageously and faithfully defended their faith in the Risen Lord.

This Easter season and beyond, we are also reminded that as Christians, as Pope St. John Paul II once famously said, that we are all Easter people, and Alleluia is our song. This means that all of us are called to live a truly holy and worthy lives, lives that are truly active, committed to God and missionary, full of compassion for one another and righteousness, justice and virtues in all of our actions throughout life. We must have the right disposition and attitude in life in order for us to be able to follow the Lord worthily in our lives. And just as the Israelites still continue their journey after crossing the sea out of Egypt, which is a symbolism and prefigurement of our baptism, therefore, baptism is not the end of our journey towards God, but rather, marks the new beginning in this journey we have towards God. As we renew our baptismal promises, we are reminded of this commitment that we have in following God and obeying His commandments.

Essentially, we are called to proclaim the Lord and His Resurrection, His Good News and salvation to the world. But in order to do this, we must first live our lives worthily as good and faithful Christians, and this is something that many of us have difficulty doing because we face so many obstacles, temptations and challenges in our daily lives. And this is why as we enter into this joyful Easter season, we have to renew our commitment and dedication to the Lord, in doing our best to live our lives worthily and to commit ourselves to a truly holy and blessed existence in God, in all of our actions, words and deeds, and in how we interact with others around us. We cannot be hypocrites who claim to believe in the Lord and yet act in the manner that is contrary to our faith and beliefs in God.

That is why as we all enter into this joyous season of Easter, celebrating the Lord’s glorious Resurrection, let us all strive to commit ourselves to be ever more faithful and sincere in following our Risen Lord in everything that we say and do. Let the transformations and conversions that we have experienced during the Lenten season continue to bear their fruits through this time of Easter and beyond. May all of us be faithful and ever more courageous witnesses of Our Lord and His Resurrection, being good role models and inspirations to our fellow brothers and sisters, helping ever more people to come closer to God and His salvation. May our Risen Lord continue to bless us all and give us His light of Hope, and strengthen us in our resolve to follow Him wholeheartedly, now and always. Amen.

Sunday, 20 April 2025 : Easter Vigil Mass, Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord (Homily and Scripture Reflections)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, this evening on this Easter Vigil Mass, all of us finally have reached the end of our Lenten journey, a forty days long period of purification and reorientation of our lives, of more intense connection with God and renewal of our lives. Now, on this very evening we celebrate the glorious Resurrection of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Who has suffered and died for us, bearing all the burdens and punishments that are due for our sins and wickedness. Through His Resurrection, He has shown us the great triumph that He had won over sin and death, showing us that they no longer hold dominion and power over us. And tonight we have finally come to the culmination of our long wait for salvation, and rejoicing together as one Church and holy people of God, we cry and sing out together, ‘Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ is Risen! Christ has conquered death!’

All these joy and celebration that we have this evening and this upcoming fifty days of rejoicing during the whole Easter season come from the fact that we have been given the assurance of eternal life and freedom from the damnation and domination of sin, and how death no longer reigns over us. Through His glorious Resurrection, Our Lord has promised that we too shall rise with Him and enjoy forever the true joy and glory of God’s Kingdom, where we shall enjoy forever the fullness of God’s grace and blessings. This is what the Lord has always meant and intended for all of us, as each one of us have been created out of God’s overflowing love and kindness, and He has always wanted us to enjoy forever the fullness of His love, all the blessings and good things He has created in this world. However, our disobedience and sins came in between us and God.

God however never gave up on us and His love for us endures even though we have rebelled against Him and have often showed a lot of stubbornness in our attitudes and ways. He has promised from the very beginning of time, from the time when He created us all as we have heard in the account from the Book of Genesis of the creation of the whole world and the Universe, creating all the things good and perfect as He has always meant it, including us mankind, His most beloved ones, created in His own image and likeness. But disobedience caused by our ancestors’ inability to resist the temptations of the devil led them and all of us into sin, which brought corruption into the perfection that used to be ours before our downfall into sin. And this separated us from God and His love, forcing us to be separated from God and exiled from Eden, from God’s Holy Presence.

We heard therefore throughout the many readings covered in this Easter Vigil liturgy the many things that God had done in planning for and bringing about our salvation, our liberation from sin and from the dominion of death. He showed us all His love and desire to be reunited with us by calling those from among us to be the ones to prepare the path for the eventual coming of His salvation, beginning with Abraham as we heard from our second reading today, also taken from the Book of Genesis. We heard in that occasion how Abraham, with whom God had made a Covenant with, was called by the Lord to bring his beloved son Isaac to be offered as a sacrifice to God at Mount Moriah. For the context, Isaac was the son which God had long promised to Abraham and his wife, Sarah after they had long been barren without a child.

Yet, God sought to take Isaac away from Abraham, made him to be a sacrifice to be offered to God. Certainly Abraham must have had some uncertainties or even doubts about this instruction from God, and he clearly would have struggled internally over it, considering just how much he had treasured and loved Isaac. But ultimately, Abraham chose to obey God and to put his faith in Him. Abraham trusted that the Lord knew what was best for him and his son Isaac, and went up the mountain of Moriah with Isaac, with the intention to offer him up to God as a sacrifice, with a heavy heart but also at the same time, with faith and trust in God. God saw Abraham’s great faith and trust in Him, and He told Abraham at the moment that he was about to sacrifice Isaac that He had seen his faith and was testing him with the instruction, sending a ram to replace Isaac as a sacrifice, while renewing the Covenant which He has made with Abraham, affirming the blessings that Abraham and his descendants will receive.

Now, this location of Mount Moriah is very significant and the reason why this passage was chosen as one of the readings of this Easter Vigil because many centuries later, long after the time of Abraham and Isaac, another important sacrifice were to take place at the very same site. Yes, I am referring to none other than the sacrifice of Our Lord Jesus at Calvary, a hill or mountain located just outside of Jerusalem. This site of Mount Moriah was historically and traditionally associated with the site of the Lord’s crucifixion at Calvary. Therefore, the sacrifice of Isaac was in fact a prefigurement of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross at Calvary, revealing the plan that God has in mind in His desire to redeem all of us from our sins.

And there are a lot of symbolisms from this event of the sacrifice of Mount Moriah when placed side by side with the Lord’s crucifixion. Just like Abraham who willingly offered Isaac, his own most beloved son to be sacrificed to God even when he could have refused to do so, God did not spare His own most Beloved Son, His only Begotten, Whom He offered willingly and freely for us all, to be sacrificed as the Paschal Lamb, by Whose sufferings and death, we may be freed and healed from our many sins and corruptions due to those sins. Through the breaking of the Lord’s Most Precious Body and the shedding of His Most Precious Blood, sharing these with us through the gift of the Most Holy Eucharist, God has crafted for us the perfect and ultimate remedy for our sins.

The death of Christ Who willingly took upon Himself our many sins and their punishments is also reminiscent of how God spared Isaac by sending a ram to be sacrificed in his place. Therefore, as we have commemorated yesterday on Good Friday, Our Lord’s crucifixion, His sufferings and death brought us to freedom from our sins because by His Most Precious Body and Blood that we have partaken in the Eucharist and by our sincere faith and desire to be reunited with Him, God has forgiven us all our sins and made us all whole once again, freed from all the shackles of sin and all the bonds of temptations and evils that have so far kept us chained and separated from Him, our loving Father and Creator.

Then from our third reading today, which is a compulsory reading for this Easter Vigil liturgy, we heard the passage of the Book of Exodus from the moment when the Lord brought His people, the Israelites to the shores of the sea, where He opened the sea before them and allowing all of them to walk on the dry seabed, protecting them from their enemies and pursuers, the Egyptians and their Pharaoh. The latter did not want to let the Israelites go and made one final attempt to capture all the Israelites or to destroy all of them, after earlier on having let them to go free to the land promised to them by God. And we heard how God rescued His people, leading them through the waters of the sea to the other side, beginning their journey towards the promised land. It was at that moment when they left the land of Egypt behind.

And of course we heard how God crushed those Egyptians and their chariots and armies, sinking them all beneath the waves. But the Israelites were brought safely to the other end of the sea, and they rejoiced greatly at God Who has shown them His great might and triumphed against their enemies and all those who have once enslaved and persecuted them. This account of the Exodus and how God rescued His people is in fact also very symbolic and very much related to what the Lord Himself would do to save His people through Jesus Christ, His Son and Our Saviour.  Again in this case, much as the parallels between Isaac’s sacrifice and that of Christ’s, here we can also see how God led His people through the darkness of sin and into a new life with Him.

That journey through the water of the sea, opened up by the Lord before the people symbolised the Israelites having left behind their past life and slavery in Egypt, and instead they then entered into new lives and existence in which they were free and were guided by God on their journey to the land of promise. This is experienced by all of us who have gone through the Sacrament of Baptism, especially those among us who have been baptised on this Easter Vigil itself. And for all those among us who are going to be baptised later after this, as they receive the water of baptism either by pouring or immersion, this is symbolic of what the people of God had once experienced in the miraculous crossing of the sea as depicted in the Book of Exodus.

Like the Israelites who have been led from the place of their slavery into a new land of freedom, all of us have been led from our past, sinful existence into a new life and existence blessed by God. And just as the Lord has crushed and defeated the forces, armies and chariots of the Egyptians chasing after them, liberating them from the shackles of their slavers and oppressors, thus through baptism, all of us as Christians have been brought to freedom as the Lord has triumphed through His glorious Resurrection that all of us celebrate today, crushing and defeating all the forces of evil, the dominion and power of sin and death. They no longer have power and dominion over us, and through this victory, God is leading us all to the new, blessed existence in Him. That is what we all rejoice for today, because in Christ, our Risen Lord, we have the hope of eternal life and overcoming death.

Death is always something that is fearsome to us, as it marks the end of our earthly existence and life as we all know it. It is something that all of us have to experience because of sin, and by our sins, all of us have to suffer through death, and yet, because we know that Christ has Risen from the dead, we now know that there is life and existence beyond death, and death is not the end of all hope. Instead, through the Resurrection, we know that by sharing in His humanity, all of us have shared in the death of Christ, the death to our past, sinful way of life, symbolised by the gift of water which destroys the Egyptians in the days of the Exodus, and then the new life which water also symbolises, as we are led into the new life in Christ, in the assurance that we will also share in the Resurrection of Christ when the time comes. This is what we have heard earlier on from the Epistle reading before the Gospel, taken from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans.

The remaining passages of the Scripture readings today from the Old Testament highlights the promises of the Lord of His salvation through the prophets like Isaiah, Baruch and Ezekiel, all of which have come to fruition in the coming of Jesus Christ, our Risen Lord. By His coming into this world, God has revealed to us all that He has planned from the very beginning for us, to rescue us and to lead us all back to Himself. And that is why, it is important that Christ our Lord truly died that day on Good Friday, just as we have reflected about it yesterday, because without His suffering and death, then the significance of the Resurrection will be diminished and missed. It was precisely because of the death of Christ that we have been redeemed, united to Him in death, and by His offering of a most pure and holy, a worthy offering on our behalf, we have been cleansed and forgiven from our sins.

The Lord’s Resurrection is then even more important, as if the Lord had died and not risen from the dead, then truly there can be no hope for us. Since, if the Lord Himself, Who is without sin, perished and died, and did not overcome death, then how can there be hope for us? Yet, since the Risen Lord had triumphed over death itself and showed that death does not have the final say over us, and that by His grace and love, God will restore life to all of us, hence, we should no longer fear death and yet, we must remain vigilant of sin because if we still continue to sin against God and refuse His generous offer of forgiveness and mercy, then in the end, it is by our sins that we have not repented from that we will be judged against and condemned by.

Therefore, we are also reminded that as Christians, as Pope St. John Paul II once famously said, that we are all Easter people, and Alleluia is our song. This means that all of us are called to live a truly holy and worthy lives, lives that are truly active, committed to God and missionary, full of compassion for one another and righteousness, justice and virtues in all of our actions throughout life. We must have the right disposition and attitude in life in order for us to be able to follow the Lord worthily in our lives. And just as the Israelites still continue their journey after crossing the sea out of Egypt, which is a symbolism and prefigurement of our baptism, therefore, baptism is not the end of our journey towards God, but rather, marks the new beginning in this journey we have towards God.

Essentially, we are called to proclaim the Lord and His Resurrection, His Good News and salvation to the world. But in order to do this, we must first live our lives worthily as good and faithful Christians, and this is something that many of us have difficulty doing because we face so many obstacles, temptations and challenges in our daily lives. And this is why as we enter into this joyful Easter season, we have to renew our commitment and dedication to the Lord, in doing our best to live our lives worthily and to commit ourselves to a truly holy and blessed existence in God, in all of our actions, words and deeds, and in how we interact with others around us. We cannot be hypocrites who claim to believe in the Lord and yet act in the manner that is contrary to our faith and beliefs in God.

That is why as we all enter into this joyous season of Easter, celebrating the Lord’s glorious Resurrection, let us all strive to commit ourselves to be ever more faithful and sincere in following our Risen Lord in everything that we say and do. Let the transformations and conversions that we have experienced during the Lenten season continue to bear their fruits through this time of Easter and beyond. May all of us be faithful and ever more courageous witnesses of Our Lord and His Resurrection, being good role models and inspirations to our fellow brothers and sisters, helping ever more people to come closer to God and His salvation. May our Risen Lord continue to bless us all and give us His light of Hope, and strengthen us in our resolve to follow Him wholeheartedly, now and always. Amen.

Sunday, 26 May 2024 : Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity (Homily and Scripture Reflections)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, this Sunday we celebrate the occasion of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, or also known as Trinity Sunday. On this Sunday we commemorate and focus our attention on this important tenet in our Christian faith, one that is truly Christian in nature, and one of the core tenets and beliefs of our faith in God. This is because unlike any other monotheistic beliefs, there is none other that beliefs in the Holy Trinity of One God in Three Divine Persons as we have believed in, the belief in the Triune God Who is One and only One, and yet manifesting Himself in Three Divine Persons of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, distinct and yet indivisible and perfectly united to each other as One.

This is our Christian faith, our Trinitarian beliefs and our faith in the One Lord Who in His Person of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit have each interacted with us, and shown us all His love and truth, His compassion and grace. But what is the Holy Trinity all about? Do we truly know and understand what it means for us to believe in the One Lord in Three Divine Persons? There are many people both within and outside the Church who misunderstood what the Holy Trinity is all about, and there are not few of those who think that we worship not one but three Gods. This is definitely false, and it does not help that there are quite a lot of falsehoods and inaccurate representations of the Holy Trinity that are believed by those outside the Church, misrepresentations of the Holy Trinity that perpetuated this misunderstandings, that even quite a number within the Church also followed and believed in.

What is the Holy Trinity? As mentioned, as Christians we believe in the One and only True God, Creator and Master of all the Universe, which has Three Divine Persons or Aspects just as we profess every time we say the Creed. The Nicene Creed begins with, ‘I believe in One God’, which states clearly this belief in the Oneness of God, and then continues with ‘The Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth’, and then ‘I believe in One Lord Jesus Christ, the only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages… consubstantial with the Father’ which highlights that there has always been only One Lord and God, and the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit are all part of this One God, with Jesus Christ, the Son of God being ‘begotten’ and not ‘created’. The Son and the Holy Spirit are part of this Holy Trinity together with the Father, from before the beginning of time.

The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all co-equal and co-eternal, having existed before the beginning of time, for eternity. And unlike what some heresies and false teachings propagated, we all believe that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all equal to each other, and the Son and/or the Holy Spirit are not subordinated to any of the other members of the Holy Trinity. Then, at the same time, the Holy Trinity is incomplete without any of its members, and this highlights the fact mentioned earlier that the Three Divine Persons of the Holy Trinity are both distinct and indivisible at the same time. Each and every members of the Holy Trinity are present at the moment of Creation and throughout all history. The Father willed the Creation and the Universe into being, through the Son, the Word of God, by His words, ‘Let there be…’, and the Holy Spirit being the Spirit of Creation and Life present in all of Creation, making all things coming to be.

At the moment of the Incarnation, the Holy Spirit was also present, with the Father’s will again making the impossible to be possible, that the Son of God, the Divine Word, became incarnate in the flesh, taking up our human form and existence, our nature to be the Son of Man, in the Person of Jesus Christ our Lord, by the power of the Holy Spirit that made it all happen, in the holy womb of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. The Holy Trinity has been mentioned in the many parts of the Scriptures, and throughout the history of the world, and at the supreme moment of our salvation when the Lord died on the Cross, the Holy Trinity is again present, as the Son of God, lay dying on His Cross, gave up His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, back to God the Father, with the words, ‘Father, into Your hands, I commend My Spirit.’ Truly, the Lord in His Most Holy Trinity, has been always present in our midst, all these time, just as through His Son, He has made Himself visible, approachable and tangible to us.

The most tangible proof of the Holy Trinity itself is the words of the Lord, Who said that ‘I and the Father are One.’ and in another occasion with, ‘May they all be one, just as We are One.’, referring to the Oneness and the Unity of the Holy Trinity in the One God, and the relationship between the Father and the Son, and then also the Holy Spirit, which the Lord Jesus in more than one occasion send upon the disciples, with the words, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’ And the Lord Himself told the disciples and all of His Church as we heard in our Gospel passage, the Great Commission that He has entrusted to each and every one of us, that is to go forth to all the peoples and all the nations so that everyone from all the nations may receive the Good News of God, believe in Him and be baptised in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. All these are the reasons why although throughout time and history, there were those who denied the Holy Trinity, and yet the belief in the Triune God remains strong to this very day.

Now, after we have discussed the nature of the Holy Trinity and our belief in the Triune God, we also need to ask ourselves, why the Lord then created us all? In our first reading this Sunday, we heard from the Book of Deuteronomy in which Moses spoke to the people of Israel during the time of the Exodus about their great privilege to have been called and chosen as the holy people of God, as the ones whom God had first made to be His own people, to be loved and cared for by Him. Why did God then create all of us if He is already perfect and all good? First of all, we must understand that the Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit is united by the perfect bond of love, which overflows from the Holy Trinity to all of us. God is Love, and He is so full of love that He wants to share this love with each and every one of us. We were created so that we may share in God’s love.

That was why we heard from the Book of Deuteronomy, of Moses reminding the people of just how much God had loved them, taken care of them and provided for them despite of their many disobedience and rebellious attitudes. God is so full of love that He has done all that were necessary to bring them out of their slavery and bondage in Egypt, and providing them with the means to survive the long journey in the desert, protecting them all from harm and from their enemies. And while they were also chastised and punished by the Lord for their disobedience and rebellion, but God did so with the intention to help His people to find their way back towards Him, and for them all to realise that their attitudes and actions were causing them to be sundered and separated from His wonderful love, grace and kindness.

In our second reading today, we heard from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Church and the faithful people of God in Rome in which he spoke of how every one of them have become and have indeed been made to be the children of God, as through His Spirit and by His Son sharing in our human nature and existence, all of us have received this adoption, by becoming members and parts of the Body of Christ, the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church that just as Christ Our Lord called God the Father as His Heavenly Father, thus we are all also able to call the Lord our God as our Father as well. This is what all of us have received from the Lord Himself, showing us just how loving and compassionate He is, and how fortunate all of us indeed are, to have been beloved in such a way.

What we all now need to do as Christians is that we need to first of all remember this core tenet of our faith in the Most Holy Trinity, our Lord and God, Creator and Master of all the Universe, Who is One, but having Three Divine Persons in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We have to appreciate and understand the significance of this Trinitarian Doctrine so that we may help many others both within and outside the Church to know what it is that we all as Christians truly believe in the Lord, in one God Who manifested Himself in the Three Divine Persons, co-equal and co-eternal, distinct and yet indivisible from one another. We must also give thanks to Him Who has loved us so much that this overflowing love from the perfect bond in the Holy Trinity has been outpoured on us from the very beginning.

Then, reflecting upon the unity within the Most Holy Trinity, let us also remember our own community of believers as Christians, who are all members of the same Body of Christ, the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. If Our Lord Himself is perfectly united in the indivisible bond of love in the Most Holy Trinity, then we ourselves cannot and should not be divided against each other. Unfortunately and sadly, such divisions are quite common both in the past and present, as there were various schisms and heresies that led to the splintering of the unity of the Body of Christ, the One Church of God. This is why on this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we must renew our faith in the Lord and strive to advance and champion unity among all the believers in Christ, our Lord.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us all therefore as Christians, as those who believe in the One Lord in Three Divine Persons, the Most Holy Trinity and Triune God, continue to live our lives most worthily, so that by our most exemplary lives, we may truly be the bearers of Our Lord’s truth and Good News, and be the worthy bearers of His love and compassion, His ways and examples into this world. O Most Holy God, forever worthy of praise, honour and worship, Our Lord and God in the Most Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, have mercy on us all sinners and be with Your Church, so that in all that we do and in our every good efforts and endeavours, may You continue to bless and guide us all in our path, in serving You at all times. Amen.

Sunday, 19 May 2024 : Solemnity of Pentecost Sunday (Homily and Scripture Reflections)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, this Sunday as we celebrate this most joyful occasion of the Solemnity of Pentecost Sunday, we recall the fullness of joy and great celebrations that we have done in the past glorious and most joyful fifty days of Easter since that of Easter Vigil. Pentecost celebrates the coming and descent of the Holy Spirit from God upon His Church, to all the disciples and followers of Christ. On that day, the Lord fulfilled His promises to His disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit, Whom He called as the Helper or the Advocate, to lead and guide the path of the Church and all the faithful, strengthening them in their journey of faith, empowering them to be courageous and to be able to persevere despite the trials and challenges that they may have to face.

This important day and celebration is a reminder for all of us that through the coming and descent of the Holy Spirit to all of us, we have received once again the grace of God that had been separated from us due to our sins and wickedness, and through the Holy Spirit, God had shown that He is always ever present with His Church and faithful ones, having guided us all throughout these past two millennia of history, from the very beginning of the Church and up to this very day, through all the challenges and trials facing the Church and all the Christian faithful. The Holy Spirit had guided the Church fathers and leaders in walking down the path of the Lord, that while at times the Church and many among the faithful had fallen into the wrong paths, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, eventually the Church is moving ahead again in the right path.

Many people often wrongly associate Pentecost with the so-called ‘Birthday of the Church’ and it does not help that in some places, popular practices related to this birthday celebration of the Church are commonplace. The Church according to the Church fathers and Apostolic tradition, as written in the Catechism of the Catholic Church was ‘born’ and established from the side of the Lord, from the outpouring of the Blood and water that came from the Lord’s Body, lay broken and crushed on Good Friday, at the end of His Passion, His suffering and death. Through His earlier institution of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and the Ministerial Priesthood at the Last Supper, and through His completion of the perfect offering and sacrifice of the New and Eternal Passover, the New and Eternal Covenant, Christ has formed the Church that is His Body, uniting all of the believers with Himself.

What the Pentecost is more accurately associated with is the moment when the Church is ‘revealed’ to the world, with an analogy and comparison similar to that of Christmas and Epiphany. While Christmas marks the moment when the Lord Jesus, Our Saviour was born into this world, it is at Epiphany that He is revealed and manifested to the whole world through the representation of the Three Magi or the Three Wise Men. Thus, the Church that is born on Good Friday and the Paschal Triduum, was also revealed to the whole world at the moment of the Pentecost, at the time when there was a very major shift in the attitude of the Apostles and disciples of the Lord, who began to actively proclaim the Word of God and His Good News to everyone when previously they had been hiding in fear.

This was what we have heard in our first reading today, detailing to us what happened on the day of the first Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon all the Apostles and disciples who were hiding in fear from the Jewish authorities who had threatened everyone that taught in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and who had put in place efforts to silence the disciples of the Lord. They were fearful because the Lord was no longer physically with them, having ascended into Heaven just ten days earlier, but with the arrival and descent of the Holy Spirit, and as they were inflamed and strengthened by the fire of the Holy Spirit, their hearts were encouraged and they received the strength, the wisdom and the power to go forth and to proclaim the Good News of God with great fervour and courage as we have heard.

And through their efforts, many people who were then gathered in Jerusalem for the Festival of Pentecost, coming from the different regions and countries of the world, many of whom were Jews who were living in the diaspora, came to hear of the Lord Jesus, as many of them might not have heard or known about Him before. Those people came to be touched by the message of God’s truth and His Good News that the Apostles told them in their various languages, the gift which the Holy Spirit had brought to them, and about three thousand people accepted the Lord on that day, becoming the earliest members of the Church of God together with those Apostles and disciples of the Lord. The rapid growth of the Church from that day of Pentecost and the changing attitude of the Apostles and disciples of the Lord, empowered by the Holy Spirit made the Church no longer hidden but instead revealed to the whole world, which is what Pentecost is all about.

In our second reading today, we heard from the Epistle of St. Paul the Apostle, either to the Church in Corinth or Galatia, of the gifts and the fruits of the Holy Spirit which God had imparted to all of us who have received this most wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit through the Sacraments of the Church. The Holy Spirit has many gifts, and these, traditionally seven, are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord, all of which are the things which God had bestowed on us all through His Spirit, alongside with various blessings, talents and abilities that allow us to carry out whatever it is that He had entrusted to us all to do with our lives. Each and every one of us have been given and equipped with these various gifts and opportunities so that we may truly live our lives worthily and in accordance to what the Lord has shown and taught us, so that by our exemplary lives, we may indeed be good role models and inspirations for others to follow, and that we may lead others to God’s truth and salvation.

Meanwhile, the fruits of the Holy Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, all of which are manifestations of the works and the gifts of the Holy Spirit which God had granted to us. All of us are called and expected to do what God had called us to do, and to make good use of the gifts and the opportunities that have been revealed and passed to us all. Like the parable of the talents that the Lord had used in teaching His disciples, all of us as God’s stewards, disciples and servants are expected to make good use of the various things and blessings which God had given to us, so that we may indeed bear rich fruits of the Holy Spirit in our various communities, and be the exemplary role models and the shining beacons of God’s light and truth in our world today.

Lastly, in our Gospel passage today, we then heard of the Lord Jesus giving the Holy Spirit to the disciples, reminding them of what they were supposed to do as His disciples and followers. This gift of the Holy Spirit which the Lord had mentioned and explained on several occasions would eventually came to the fullness and completion with the coming of the Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descending on the Apostles and the disciples of the Lord, the Church of God, giving them the guidance, strength and the peace in their hearts and minds to carry out to the best of their abilities everything which God had entrusted to them to do. Through the Holy Spirit, God had sent forth His disciples and followers to carry out the most important mission which He entrusted to them, His Great Commission, that is to proclaim His Good News and truth, His salvation and love to all the nations, and to make disciples of every people of every nations, baptising them in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

As we all reflect upon the messages of God’s truth and love as contained within the Sacred Scriptures and what we have discussed regarding the Holy Spirit and how God has empowered us all with the strength and the new life and opportunities to do His will through the Holy Spirit, let us all therefore allow Him to guide us all and turn away from all sorts of wickedness and evils that had caused us to not be able to follow the Lord wholeheartedly. As one united Church of God, revealed to all on this great Solemnity of Pentecost, let us all continue to carry on the missions entrusted to us, to be ever full of the Holy Spirit and allow the Spirit to guide us in our respective vocations and missions in life, that through us and our faithful living and testimony, our every actions and deeds, we may always be fruitful in all things.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of all the faithful and strengthen us with the warmth of God’s most wonderful love. Come and renew the whole world and all of us mankind, and enkindle in us the great passionate fires of Your love. Come Holy Spirit, come and be with us all, the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church of God. Amen.

Sunday, 19 May 2024 : Vigil Mass of the Solemnity of Pentecost Sunday (Homily and Scripture Reflections)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, this evening as we all gather together on this Great Vigil of the Solemnity of Pentecost Sunday at the very end of the glorious season of Easter, we recall the fullness of joy and great celebrations that we have done in the past glorious and most joyful fifty days of Easter since that of Easter Vigil. This celebration of the Pentecost Vigil is truly ancient and has a lot of parallel and similarities to that of Easter Vigil which marks the beginning of the Easter season, as historically, Pentecost ranks as one of the greatest Feasts and Solemnities of the Church in its whole entire liturgical year, second only after Easter itself. While Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday itself marks the commemoration of the glorious and triumphant victory that the Risen Christ, Our Lord had won over evil, sin and death through His Resurrection, Pentecost celebrates the coming and descent of the Holy Spirit from God upon His Church, to all the disciples and followers of Christ.

This celebration of the Vigil of the Pentecost Sunday or Pentecost Vigil is truly steeped in history and tradition, as just like that of Easter Vigil, there are multiple Old Testament readings that are to be read, historically seven just like that of the Easter Vigil. While the readings of the Easter Vigil focused on the history of salvation and how God had finally fulfilled and accomplished everything that He had promised to His people through His prophets, sending His Saviour into this world, the readings of the Pentecost Vigil that we have heard today in their various forms and richness highlighted the role that the Holy Spirit played in the Church, in our lives as Christians and how God had guided us all through the same Holy Spirit. Not only that but just like Easter Vigil when usually the catechumens are baptised and received into the Church, during this Pentecost Vigil, traditionally may also involve initiation of catechumens into the Church.

In our Scripture readings this Pentecost Vigil, from the Book of Genesis we heard of the story of the Tower of Babel and how mankind in their hubris and pride tried to build a tower that was so high that it could reach up to Heaven itself, or so they thought. God saw all their wicked plans and ambitions, their pride and evils and confused their languages and speeches. Prior to this moment, everyone was able to understand each other languages and speeches, but after the rebellion of the Tower of Babel, mankind was scattered all over the world, unable to comprehend one another. This was because of the withdrawal of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which was contrasted with the gift of tongues which the Apostles and the other disciples of the Lord received on the day of Pentecost, when they speak in tongues and everyone were able to comprehend what the disciples of the Lord were speaking about.

Meanwhile, from another reading from the Old Testament, taken from the Book of Exodus, we heard of the moment when the Lord made His Covenant with His people, the Israelites, at the holy Mountain of God at Sinai. We heard how at that place Moses, who lead the people of Israel gathered all the elders and all the people, and told them of what the Lord wanted to make with them, to establish a Covenant with them anew just as He had done with their ancestors. It was at that moment which the Lord made known His Presence through loud sounds and fire, just as what happened on the day of Pentecost, when the tongues of flames of the Holy Spirit descended upon the Lord’s disciples hidden in the upper room, together with the loud sound just like that at Mount Sinai.

Not only that, but it was during this moment at Mount Sinai when the Israelites themselves also rebelled against God, by making a golden calf idol and worshipping it, which resulted in them being punished, with three thousand people being condemned and killed for their rebellion. This is contrasted to what we heard from the account of the events of the Pentecost, as the works of the Lord’s disciples proclaiming God’s Good News and salvation touched the hearts and minds of so many people that three thousand people chose to be baptised and become part of the Church of God, as a clear parallel and antithesis of what happened back at Mount Sinai, again just like the Tower of Babel story, showing how the Lord through His Holy Spirit had restored to the world and to us mankind the order and sanctity that had been lost through our rebellion against God and sin.

In another Old Testament reading from the Book of the prophet Ezekiel, we then heard of the story of the valley filled with vast number of dry bones, which represented the rebellion of mankind and their sins, particularly the Israelites, whom by the time of the prophet Ezekiel had committed a great number of sins and mistakes, and had suffered the consequences of those sins and faults. Sin lead to destruction and death, and that was what the vision of the valley of dry bones showed to the prophet Ezekiel and all of us. But through the Spirit of God, referring to the Holy Spirit, which in the Nicene Creed we refer to as the Lord, the Giver of Life, proceeding from the Father and Son to us all, just as at the moment of Creation, when God created all things from nothingness, God restored life to all those dry bones and Ezekiel saw a huge nation of all the peoples assembled, referring to the restoration of God’s people into the state of grace before their downfall into sin.

And this is what the Holy Spirit has done to us, as we recall this great gift from God, the gift of the Holy Spirit that He has given to His Church, to fill us all with His love and wisdom, to restore unto us the life, grace and unity with God which we have lost through our rebelliousness and sins. St. Paul in his Epistle to the Church and the faithful in Rome in our second reading passage today spoke about the Holy Spirit that we have received, which gave us a foretaste of things that is to come. This means that through the gift of the Holy Spirit, all of us have received the gift of new life and existence which happened and is possible because of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, guiding and strengthening us in each and every moments of our existence.

The Holy Spirit has shown us the path towards the Lord, and as the Lord Jesus Himself made it clear to us through our Gospel passage today, that the Presence of the Holy Spirit in us is like that of a life-giving water and spring welling up in us, filling us with God’s grace and love, empowering and strengthening us in the manner how the Lord’s disciples and followers have been guided and strengthened by the same Holy Spirit throughout all the things that they had done, in proclaiming the Lord’s Good News and salvation to the people of all the nations. They have joyfully borne the responsibilities and the commitments to be the bearers of God’s truth, and by the wisdom imparted to them through the Spirit of God, they therefore bore rich fruits of the Holy Spirit and resulted in many great conversions and many souls embracing God’s saving grace.

As we all reflect upon the messages of God’s truth and love as contained within the Sacred Scriptures and what we have discussed regarding the Holy Spirit and how God has empowered us all with the strength and the new life and opportunities to do His will through the Holy Spirit, let us all therefore allow Him to guide us all and turn away from all sorts of wickedness and evils that had caused us to not be able to follow the Lord wholeheartedly. As one united Church of God, revealed to all on this great Solemnity of Pentecost, let us all continue to carry on the missions entrusted to us, to be ever full of the Holy Spirit and allow the Spirit to guide us in our respective vocations and missions in life, that through us and our faithful living and testimony, our every actions and deeds, we may always be fruitful in all things.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of all the faithful and strengthen us with the warmth of God’s most wonderful love. Come and renew the whole world and all of us mankind, and enkindle in us the great passionate fires of Your love. Come Holy Spirit, come and be with us all, the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church of God. Amen.

Saturday, 18 May 2024 : 7th Week of Easter, Memorial of Pope St. John I, Pope and Martyr (Homily and Scripture Reflections)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we gather together as one united and holy people of God at the eve of the end of the glorious and most joyful season of Easter which will come to its conclusion tomorrow with the Solemnity of Pentecost Sunday. Today, the readings from the Sacred Scriptures remind us all of the continuing works that each and every one of us as Christians have been entrusted with. All of us as the people whom God had called and chosen, we are all given the respective talents, gifts, blessings and all the things which can help us in our path, in leading lives that are truly worthy of God, in doing our best so that we may inspire others to follow in the path of righteousness and in God’s grace. We must always be the ones to bring forth the light and Good News of God’s salvation to our world today, which is still enshrouded in darkness of sin and evil.

In our first reading today, we heard of the last part of the ministry of the Apostle St. Paul who finally arrived in Rome after a long and arduous journey that we would know and remember if we have read the earlier parts of the Acts of the Apostles. This was the last of all of St. Paul’s missionary journeys, which he undertook to follow God’s guidance and will, to proclaim the Word of God and His salvation to the people of Rome, which was then the capital of the great and mighty Roman Empire. St. Paul therefore braved through the many dangers and challenges that he had to face as he embarked on this journey towards the Eternal City, as Rome has been commonly known by, to proclaim the Lord to everyone, and to establish the foundations of the Church there together with the other missionaries, like St. Peter, who was the first Bishop of Rome.

We heard how the Lord was with St. Paul and his mission and despite him having been technically under arrest of the earlier charges put against him, as he awaited his appeal to the Roman Emperor, he was actually given a lot of freedom to come and go as he pleased, as he continued his ministry and works among the people of Rome, to both the Jews and the Gentiles or non-Jewish people alike, many of whom became believers in Christ, embracing the love of God and His salvation which He has revealed through His Son and His Apostles. St. Paul continued to commit himself thoroughly to fulfil whatever the Lord had entrusted to him to do in proclaiming His Good News, all the way to the end of his life in martyrdom, as Apostolic traditions put St. Paul as being martyred in Rome during the great persecution of Christians by the Emperor Nero.

Then, in our Gospel passage today taken from the Gospel of St. John, we heard of the conversation between the Lord Jesus and His disciples, in which the Lord told His disciples at the Last Supper when they were all discussing about His words and what He had revealed to them, firstly about the one who would betray Him, referring to Judas Iscariot, whom at the time no one would have expected to betray the Lord. Then, they also spoke about the disciple whom the Lord loved, referring to St. John the Apostle himself, the writer of this Gospel. As was common and expected, there was a kind of rivalry and jealousy existing between the disciples, as they all definitely tried to get more favour in the eyes of the Lord, and St. John in particular was one who was a target of the other disciples.

That was because in another occasion in the Gospels, we heard how St. John and St. James, together with their mother came before the Lord, and the mother asked the Lord Jesus for special favours for her sons, to sit by His left and right sides, an act which was met by an immediate unhappiness and discord among the Lord’s disciples. At that time, some if not many among the Lord’s followers did follow Him hoping that He would be the Messiah to restore the Kingdom of Israel, and they likely hoped to gain benefits and honour, glory and power for themselves in the event that the Lord accomplished His works and missions. But they failed to understand that this was not what the Lord intended to do, and as the Lord Himself pointed out to everyone, that it was not their business to know or understand if the disciple beloved by the Lord, St. John the Apostle would not die before he was to see His coming.

Those words indeed came to be true as Apostolic traditions again showed that St. John the Apostle was the only one among all the Apostles who did not suffer martyrdom, and St. John would also see the Lord’s salvation through visions at the Island of Patmos, which he then recorded in his Book of Apocalypse or Revelations. All the other Apostles including that of St. Paul eventually met their end through martyrdom, giving their lives after various kinds of sufferings and persecutions to glorify God. They did not give up on their faith in God, and they continued to labour hard for God and for the people they had been entrusted with. However, this did not mean that St. John did not suffer for his faith and commitment to God. Being the last among the Apostles to survive, he endured many decades of hardships and challenges, persecutions and exiles, including to the Island of Patmos mentioned earlier. In a sense, he was also a martyr, as he endured ‘white martyrdom’ not by shedding his blood but by enduring great sufferings for the Lord’s sake throughout his ministry.

Today, the Church also celebrates the feast of a great Church father and devoted man of God, whose faith and commitment to God can be a great inspiration and strength for all of us. Pope St. John I was one of the early leaders and Popes of the Church, who was known especially for his courage and dedication to God in standing up against even the powerful secular power and bureaucracy, eventually martyred for his faith in God and for his commitment to his mission, just as his many predecessors before him. He was elected as Pope during a rather turbulent time for the Church especially in Rome, due to the clashes between the secular rulers of Italy, then under the Ostrogothic Kingdom, led by its Arian heretic rulers and the Roman Emperors in Constantinople.

Pope St. John I was torn between protecting the orthodoxy of the Christian teachings and faith which the Arian Ostrogothic rulers did not adhere to, and protecting the well-being and the safety of the many people and clergy under his care in Rome and its associated territories. He went on a mission to the Imperial capital in Constantinople to try to mediate the situation and was well received by the Emperor who tried to help the Pope as best as he could do. However upon his return to Rome, Pope St. John I was arrested by the Ostrogothic King, Theodoric the Great who was suspicious at the Pope of having possibly colluded and plotted against him and his kingdom with the Roman Emperor. Thus, Pope St. John I was imprisoned and eventually died in prison from maltreatment and neglect, as a martyr of the faith.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, the Lord wants to remind us all today through all these passages of the Sacred Scriptures and from the life and examples of Pope St. John I, holy Pope and Martyr of the Church, that each and every one of us must be always ready and committed to follow whatever the Lord had called us to do, and to do His will, to proclaim Him, His truth, His Good News and love to everyone, despite the challenges, hardships and trials that we may have to encounter in our paths. We must always remember that God is always by our side and He will continue to provide for our efforts and works in our journey of faith, and while we may have to suffer, but we are suffering together with Him.

Let us all therefore continue to do God’s will and strive to be the most faithful disciples and followers, to be His shining beacons of light and truth in our communities and respective societies today. Even though the season of Easter is coming to an end, let us always remember this does not mean that our responsibilities and commitments as Christians, as an Easter people blessed by the Risen Lord come to an end. Instead, as we continue to carry on living our lives each day, we should continue to commit ourselves each day with ever greater zeal and love for God in all things, now and always. Amen.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today as we listened to the words of the Sacred Scriptures, we are all reminded of the commitments that are demanded upon us all as Christians, as God’s holy and beloved people in what we have been called to do, to be the genuine and worthy bearers of God’s truth and love, His teachings and Good News. All of us are reminded to follow the Lord and to love Him wholeheartedly at all times, which is what we have been expected to do, as those whom God had called and chosen. All of us as Christians should always be ready to proclaim Him, Our Lord and Saviour in all things, to do what He has commanded us to do and to bring forth His light and salvation to the whole world through our every actions, words, interactions and deeds.

In our first reading today, we heard of the discussion between King Agrippa, the Herodian ruler of the region of Judea and that of Festus, the Roman governor who was responsible for the region of Judea and its surroundings, about that of St. Paul the Apostle, who had been incarcerated in Jerusalem ever since he arrived there and faced the Sanhedrin or the Jewish High Council. He had also been put on trial by the earlier Roman governor Felix, who received the complaints against St. Paul from the Jewish leaders, and at that time, to fulfil what the Lord had entrusted to him and the mission which he was to be sent to, the last one of his life, St. Paul chose to appeal his case to the Roman Emperor in Rome, as a privilege of him being a Roman citizen.

Thus, St. Paul was awaiting for the moment when he would be brought to Rome to appeal to the Emperor and to complete his trial there. In that meantime, as mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles, he had encounters with King Agrippa and his wife, Berenice, as well as with the Roman governor himself, and the Jewish elders and leaders tried to pursue their case against St. Paul, but St. Paul stood his ground firmly and gave very compelling arguments against those who falsely accused him of blasphemy and any other wrongdoings which he did not do. It was also mentioned that the conflicts and disagreements were seen then as internal divisions and disagreements within the Jewish community, as Christianity was then still viewed as a sect within Judaism.

St. Paul could very well have chosen an easier way and not to have to deal with all those difficult things and challenges that he had to endure as part of his ministry, enduring persecutions and prisons, one after another. But he remained steadfast in faith, entrusted everything to the Lord, believing that He would lead him to the right path, and that He would provide for His Church in the best way possible. And if he and the other disciples had to suffer, it has indeed been expected as part of their faith in the Lord, and as part of the mission which had been entrusted to them. The Lord Himself had told His disciples that they might have to suffer rejection and persecution just as He Himself had been rejected and persecuted by the world.

In our Gospel passage today, we then heard of the moment when the Lord Jesus after His Resurrection, as He was meeting with His disciples in Galilee, had a time to converse privately with St. Peter the Apostle, His chief disciple, to whom He had entrusted His Church as His Vicar. In this occasion, the Lord asked St. Peter three times, ‘Peter, do you love Me?’, to which St. Peter responded empathically with his profession of love, and as the Lord kept on repeating this same question, we heard how St. Peter was touched and felt the guilt in him as this was a clear reference and parallel to his own threefold denial of the Lord earlier on at the beginning of His Passion, when St. Peter denied knowing the Lord not just once, but three times. This was in fact the confirmation that the Lord had indeed forgiven St. Peter for his thrice denial, which St. Peter himself made with his thrice declaration of his undying love for his Lord and Master.

St. Peter according to the Gospel accounts was very ashamed and regretful over that event, and he was struck with great shame and anguish after he had committed the deed then, when he heard the cock crew after his third denial just as the Lord Himself had predicted it. However, unlike Judas Iscariot, who had betrayed the Lord to the chief priests and then shortly after took his own life out of despair and guilt, St. Peter remained faithful to the Lord and loved Him despite his own shortcomings and failures. Judas Iscariot chose to abandon hope and did not trust in the Lord’s providence and mercy, allowing Satan to lead him down the wrong path, and then he refused God’s love and mercy to the very end. On the other hand, St. Peter was truly repentant over his sins and failures, and he sought the Lord for His forgiveness and mercy.

That is why the Lord chose him, a humble fisherman, a nobody from the Lake of Galilee, a poor and brash, uneducated and illiterate man to be His chief Apostle, and to be His Vicar. God sees inside our hearts and minds in ways that we ourselves may not be able to fully realise. He sought not those whose ambitions and hubris lead them to their downfall through pride, ego and those ambitions and temptations themselves, but rather those who truly love Him wholeheartedly as St. Peter had done. St. Peter truly loved the Lord, not just in mere words as he had said it again and again to the Lord, but he also showed it through his actions and commitments, in his later many decades of hard work and contributions, efforts and leadership of the Church, as the one to whom God had entrusted His entire Church, His entire flock to. St. Peter himself was not perfect, and he was just as flawed as each and every one of us are. Yet, what matters is that, he allowed the Lord to lead and guide, to strengthen and encourage him amidst the many challenges and trials that he had to face.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, today all of us are reminded that to be a disciple of Christ, we often need to be fully and wholeheartedly committed to His cause, and there may also be many challenges, trials and obstacles in our path. But as long as we continue to commit ourselves to Him, the Lord will be always by our side and we must always have faith and trust in Him that in everything we do, we will always be strengthened, guided and empowered by His loving hands and guidance. Like St. Peter and St. Paul who have dedicated themselves fully to God’s path, and allowed themselves to be led by their faith in their actions, to endure even the worst of sufferings for our sake, let us all also allow God to lead and guide us in our path so that in everything that we say and do, we will continue to glorify Him and that we will always be ever more faithful to Him, in each and every moments of our lives. May God bless us all and be with us all, His beloved Church, now and forevermore. Amen.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we heard from the readings of the Sacred Scriptures reminding all of us that we must always remain united in purpose, faith and commitment in our whole lives, in all the things that we say and do in the Lord, our God and Master. We must not allow ourselves to be swayed and tempted to the wrong paths because of the many temptations present all around us in this world, or else we may find it easy to lose ourselves amidst all the distractions and temptations which may lead us astray from the path towards righteousness and salvation in God. This is what the Scriptures have been reminding us all today, that is to remain firmly rooted in our faith in the Lord.

In our first reading today, we heard from the account in the Acts of the Apostles detailing to us about the moment when St. Paul the Apostle faced the whole assembly of the Sanhedrin or the Jewish High Council in Jerusalem, who had been making lots of complaints and pressured the Roman authorities about the works and activities which St. Paul had done in teaching and proclaiming the Risen Lord Jesus and all of His truth to the many people, both to the Jews and the Gentiles or non-Jewish people alike. This was one of the several things which made St. Paul to be hated by many among the Sanhedrin, who worked hard to prevent further spread of the teachings of the Lord, with little success or progress. Instead, the Church kept on growing faster and more quickly even when they were persecuted.

At that time, the Sanhedrin was also composed of two main, very influential groups within the Jewish community, namely the Sadducees and the Pharisees, who dominated the political and religious landscape of the people of God at the time. The former, the Sadducees were those who were composed on the richer and more influential elites, the caste of the high priests which were selected from among them, the nobles and aristocrats within the Jewish community, as well as the rich and powerful merchants. Their great influence and power, coming from their control over the Temple and the commerce in the region made their position to be very powerful, and they clashed with St. Paul and the teachings of Christ over the belief in the Resurrection, in the other spiritual matters and the afterlife, which the Sadducees tend not to believe in, as they were people who were very much attached to the world, and they did not believe in the life beyond this world, a world where they thrived and excelled because of their power, wealth and influence.

They saw the Lord Jesus as a great threat to their status, power and influence, and the works which the Apostles including that of St. Paul had done in his many missionary journeys and works, all those things were seen by the Sadducees as threats to them, and therefore, they wanted to stop whatever that St. Paul had done, just as they had attempted to stop the Lord by persecuting, arresting and crucifying Him. Obviously none of them were successful, and the Church kept on growing rapidly, as more and more people came to believe in the Lord, listening to the words of the missionaries of the Lord, and being inspired by their great and loving examples, through which God’s love has been made manifest and real to them all. The Lord was also with them, with His Church and His disciples, and that was why they were all very successful despite the challenges facing them.

On the other hand, the Pharisees represent the religious and intellectual elite, all the experts on the Law and the Scriptures, the ones who were very concerned about the preservation of the Law and the Jewish ways of life, unlike the Sadducees who were more influenced by the Hellenic or Greek culture. The Pharisees also believed in a more egalitarian view of the participation of the people in worship, and not one that is dominated by the priestly caste, which quite a number among the Sadducees belonged to. They were in opposition to the Lord and His teachings, His ways and workings, and also those done by His Apostles and other disciples because of the disagreements in the manner how the Law should be observed, practiced and enforced. This had also led to bitter experiences and disagreements as recorded throughout the Gospels and the New Testament, like that with the Sadducees.

But we heard how the so-called united disagreement and plotting against the disciples of the Lord like St. Paul quickly disintegrated the moment St. Paul, ever so wise and astute, guided by the Holy Spirit, uttered before the whole Sanhedrin that he believed in the Resurrection and believed like how a Pharisee was, just as he himself was a Pharisee in his youth. We heard how the whole assembly ended up tearing apart and being divided, focusing on their own strife and disagreements with each other. Essentially this showed how God was not with the efforts and works of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, in trying to destroy and crush the early Christian Church and the faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who did not have the Lord’s guidance and help, would see their efforts flounder and fail against those whom God had guided and strengthened, as what happened proved this point really well.

In our Gospel passage today, we heard from the Gospel of St. John in which the continuation of the Lord’s prayers for His disciples and followers have been told to us. The Lord prayed for guidance, strength, wisdom and empowerment for all those who have answered and heeded His call, and that they all may remain united, one and strong together as a community of believers, the Church, the Body of Christ, amidst all the challenges and persecutions that they would be facing throughout all the time. The Lord prayed that they all may be One just as He and the Father are One, to be united in love and purpose with Him, and not be divided like those Pharisees and Sadducees in the Sanhedrin. All these showed just how much He truly cared for His Church and for all of His disciples and followers in the Church. He has always been with us throughout the whole entire journey, guiding and helping us, providing us with whatever we need in our path.

The Lord continued to help and guide His Church, and despite the many sufferings that His servants endured, including that of St. Paul himself, they all gladly did them and committed themselves because of their faith and trust in Him, and they knew that God was with them, by their side, protecting and providing for them at all times. They gave their all to serve the Lord and to do His will, entrusting their lives and missions to Him. That was how the Church kept on growing in strength, despite all the challenges and hardships that they were facing throughout all the time. This is why we are all reminded that we too should always continue to carry out the Lord’s works and all the things which God had entrusted to us to do in whatever circumstances and calling that He has presented to us.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us all therefore renew our commitment to serve the Lord ever more faithfully with every moments we have in our lives. Let us all continue to do our best to live our lives worthily as Christians in all of our actions, words and deeds, so that by our lives, by our faithful and inspirational examples throughout life, like that of St. Paul and the other Apostles and disciples of the Lord, we will continue to inspire and help others all around us to come ever closer to God, and to remain united to Him and with Him, and not be divided because of our worldly desires and ambitions. May God be with His Church, and bless all of us in our every good efforts, works and endeavours. Amen.
