Brethren, we pray and beseech you in the Lord Jesus, that as you have received of us, how you ought to walk, and to please God, so you also would walk, that you may abound the more. For you know what precepts I have given to you by the Lord Jesus.

For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that you should abstain from fornication, that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; not in the passion of lust, like the Gentiles that do not know God, and that no man overreach, nor deceive his brother in business, because the Lord is the Avenger of all these things, as we have told you before, and have testified.

For God had not called us unto uncleanness, but unto sanctification, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

In illo tempore : Ductus est Jesus in desertum a Spiritu, ut tentaretur in diabolo. Et cum jejunasset quadraginta diebus et quadraginta noctibus, postea esuriit. Et accedens tentator, dixit ei : Si Filius Dei es, dic, ut lapides isti panes fiant. Qui respondens, dixit : Scriptum est : Non in solo pane vivit homo, sed in omni verbo, quod procedit de ore Dei.

Tunc assumpsit eum diabolus in sanctam civitatem, et statuit eum super pinnaculum templi, et dixit ei : Si Filius Dei es, mitte Te deorsum. At that time, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert, to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards He was hungry. And the tempter coming said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones be made into bread.” He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Not in bread alone does man live, but in every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'”

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, and set Him upon the pinnacle of the Temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, cast Yourself down, for it is written, that He has given His angels charge over You, and in their hands they shall bear You up, lest perhaps You dash Your foot against a stone.” And Jesus said to Him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'”

Again the devil took Him up into a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory, and said to Him, “All these I will give You, if You fall down and adore me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Begone, Satan, for it is written, ‘You shall adore the Lord your God alone, and you shall only serve Him.'”

Then the devil left Him, and behold angels came, and ministered to Him.

He who dwells in the aid of the Most High, shall abide under the protection of the God of heaven.

For He had delivered me from the snare of the hunters, and from the sharp word.

He will overshadow you with His shoulders, and under His wings you shall trust.

His truth shall encompass you with a shield. You shall not be afraid of the terror of the night.

Of the arrow that flies in the day, of the business that walks about in the dark, of ruin and the noonday devil.

A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come nigh to you.

For He had given His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.

In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.

You shall walk upon the asp and the basilisk, and you shall trample under your foot the lion and the dragon.

Because he had hoped in Me, I will deliver him, I will protect him, because he had known My Name.

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, “When you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their face, that they may appear unto men as fasting. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.”

“But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that you do not appear to men as fasting, but to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees all in secret will repay you. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where they can be consumed by the rust and moth, and which thieves break through and steal.”

“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither the rust nor moth can consume and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there lay your heart as well.”
